City of Venice Hurricane state of Emergency
1PM SEPT 24: The City of Venice has issued a Local State of Emergency today, Tuesday, Sept. 24, as Emergency Management continues to monitor Tropical Storm Helene. This is an administrative action taken to request resources and support at the state and federal levels if needed. Sarasota County is currently under a Hurricane Watch.
City Hall and other City facilities are open to the public today and Wednesday, Sept. 25, and will be closed Thursday, Sept. 26.

FACILITY & SERVICE CLOSURES:

No trash, recycling or yard waste pickups for City of Venice starting on Thursday, Sept. 26, as the Sarasota County Landfill will be closed Thursday. Pickups of all materials will occur as usual on Wednesday, Sept. 25.
Humphris Park at the South Jetty will close as usual at 10 p.m. tonight (Tuesday) and remain closed starting Wednesday, until conditions improve as determined by the City.
Sarasota County schools will close at the end of today, Sept. 24, to allow for time to prepare schools that serve as emergency evacuation centers (shelters).
SAND DISTRIBUTION:
The City of Venice is offering a self-service sand station today and Wednesday, Sept. 24 and 25, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 252 Seaboard Ave. Sand is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Shovels will be provided.

BAGS ARE NOT AT THE SEABOARD LOCATION. Residents can either bring their own bags for sand, or pick up bags starting at 8 a.m. Sept. 24 and 25 at City Hall, 401 W. Venice Ave., or Venice Public Works, 1350 Ridgewood Ave. Limit 10 bags per vehicle.

EVACUATIONS & EVACUATION CENTERS
Sarasota County will send out an evacuation alert for Level A and manufactured home communities starting Wednesday, Sept. 25, at 7 a.m. Evacuation centers (shelters) in Sarasota County will open at noon Wednesday.
Community members can identify their evacuation level and the nearest evacuation on the county's website:
Know Your Level: https://loom.ly/KkvV1ZI
Evacuation Center: https://loom.ly/BhRe-nw. If you need transportation to an evacuation center, or are medically dependent, call Sarasota County at 311.

Be prepared and stay informed!
Secure items around your home before tropical storm winds and rain arrive. Unsecured outdoor items like furniture, trash carts, potted plants, or lawn ornaments can become projectiles in strong winds if left unsecured.
Keep up to date on emergency information by registering to receive notifications at AlertSarasotaCounty.com. Monitor official local news sources, including the U.S. National Weather Service, the National Hurricane Center and venicegov.com.
Residents in low-lying areas including Flamingo Ditch and Golden Beach may experience road flooding until the storm surge recedes. City stormwater crews are prepared to respond as soon as it is safe and conditions allow.
If street flooding occurs: Do not attempt to drive or wade through flooded streets. Flood waters can present unseen hazards to both cars and individuals. Wait for flood waters to recede before attempting to drive.

Have a disaster supply kit stocked with at least 7 days worth of nonperishable food, water, and necessary medication for each member of the household including pets.

As a reminder for motorists traveling on and off Venice Island, the 3 bridges are NEVER locked in the “up” position, and remain accessible for vehicular traffic. Mariners are encouraged to tune in to NOAA and Coast Guard channels for the latest information.

The City of Venice invites the community to take part in selecting the official logo for its Centennial celebration!

After receiving nearly 25 incredible design submissions from local artists, the Centennial Team carefully reviewed each one and narrowed the field to the top 10 designs. Now, we need your help to narrow down the final choices.

Cast your vote by 10 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18.

Starting today, community members are encouraged to vote for their three favorite designs. The logos with the most votes will be presented to City Council on Oct. 8 for final adoption. The Council-adopted logo will then be unveiled during the first Centennial Community Workshop on Oct. 16 at City Hall.

Voting is restricted to three choices per person to ensure a fair process. We value and appreciate your participation in making this Centennial milestone memorable!

The City of Venice Centennial Celebration kicks off in November 2025 with the annual holiday parade. Over an 18-month period, the City plans to embrace its 100th anniversary with community events, displays, and branding. The City of Venice Centennial logo is a specific design to commemorate and chronicle this major government milestone. The centennial logo will be featured throughout the downtown area, at City facilities, and on all City-sponsored print and digital promotional and marketing materials. The City will also allow community partners to use or display the logo if the request falls within the City’s partnership guidelines.

Submissions that were not selected to move forward will be captured and memorialized through the Venice Museum archiving process to document this historic milestone and community engagement.

The City of Venice is holding a Centennial Logo Contest to commemorate and celebrate Venice’s upcoming 100-year anniversary, which officially kicks off in November 2025 and runs for 18 months.

The Centennial logo will be featured throughout the numerous Centennial events, at City facilities and on all City-sponsored printed and digital promotional and marketing materials. The City will also allow community partners to use and display the logo as approved through the City’s partnership guidelines.

“One of our most important goals for the upcoming Centennial is to actively involve the Venice community in the process,” said Assistant City Manager James Clinch. “This logo contest will be a fun opportunity for citizens to participate directly by submitting their original logo designs and by providing valuable input for the selection of the Venice Centennial logo.”

Submitted logo designs that meet the criteria as outlined in the design brief attached will be put up for public vote in late September, with final adoption by City Council. The public is encouraged to submit logo designs by 5 p.m. Sept. 2, 2024, to [email protected].
