Becker Communications, Inc. Specializing in marketing, PR, social media, and corporate communications Writer. Story Teller. Social Media Adventurist. Wife. Eldest of six girls. My Dad Says!

Dee Dee Becker offers a wealth of marketing, communications and PR experience which began in non-profit more than thirty years ago with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, American Diabetes Association and Sentara Healthcare (Norfolk, VA). In 1998, she founded Becker Communications, consulting with clients in the entertainment, transportation, education and legal sectors, including The New York Times

Company, Virginia Port Authority, and ESPN. Today, Dee Dee’s super powers are spent crafting and telling the stories of “health care systems doing good” for their communities. From life-saving health programs and service-line initiatives to extraordinary patient successes, Dee Dee leverages the power of digital media to maximize online presence, engage communities and build brand loyalty. Dee Dee’s expertise is rooted in communications planning, writing and management across multiple platforms including traditional, web and social media. Her background includes planning and managing major corporate communications and PR initiatives for health care organizations, ranging from mergers and acquisitions to program and service line publicity and crisis management. Ask her about the time a Navy jet crashed in Virginia Beach (all survived!) – her biggest exercise in media relations while working in hospital PR. When not consulting, this University of Mary Washington graduate wears myriad other hats: Virginia Tech Hokie mom. Dee Dee enjoys freelance writing, tennis, photobooking, and volunteering as an administrator for the Virginia Tech Parents Facebook group and a moderator for Grown and Flown Parents group. With tens of thousands of members and growing, she is wildly exhilarated by moderating (and commiserating in) the wiles and trials of like-minded “grown and flown” parents. In other words, she’s NEVER without an entertaining story! The personal side:
Dee Dee is the oldest of SIX girls, known as the Sixters. “We span 18 years from top to bottom…and every hair color from blonde and brunette to black and red! Ask Dad why he had six girls and he’ll answer, ‘Because I didn’t want seven.’” The stories she shares about family life could fill a complete series of books. Think a cross between My Big Fat Greek Wedding and $h*! Always up for a good challenge, she’s done it all: marketing plans, crisis communications, corporate communications, social media strategy and more. As a wife, mother and obsessed-with-tennis player, this red-headed spitfire spends the majority of her time content writing: websites, articles, news releases, blogs - anything! Given her family life, she never lacks inspiration for a good story. We’re certain a book entitled, “The Sixterhood Diaries” is just a matter of time. My favorite quote: "The human brain starts working the moment you are born and never stops until you stand up to speak in public." --George Jessel

I kicked off the new year by having a great conversation about community management with Hal Bleiweiss who, like me, is a Meta Certified Community Manager. We worked on the same team together at Meta and I was excited to be invited as a guest on his podcast.

Highlights from our fireside chat:

❓How I ended up working for Meta and what it’s like stepping onto its massive global campus in Menlo Park, CA and speaking on stage.

🆘 How I managed a university parent group when a student was arrested for having an assault rifle on campus - and how I continue to manage that group of nearly 30K parents today.

🎤 How I built a Facebook group for community managers of university parent groups. Nearly 700 members strong, this active community represents approximately 300 college parent groups across the US, Canada and UK with a subreach of more than 1M parents and growing. While UPGA represents a diverse cross section of colleges – public, private, ivy, community – members unite over shared experiences, including everything from helicopter parent discussions to support in times of crisis. Examples: a pandemic; a mental health crisis, yielding the highest rates ever on college campuses for anxiety, depression and suicidal ideation (Ref. The Mental Health Crisis on College Campuses: https://rb.gy/t2hl2t); and 13 deadly college campus shootings this year alone (https://rb.gy/lrpydl), several whose admin teams were supported in UPGA through these tragedies.

💭 A snapshot of how VR is changing the landscape for healthcare in terms of medical professionals and patient care.

I did a thing today - an amazing project with some rockstar professionals - and I am super grateful to have been given the opportunity to participate. So many laughs! I can't wait to share more about the experience with everyone, but, in the meantime, I had to share some of the shenanigans.
Cheers,

And there you have it, folks. Meta it is! Apps and brand names will stay the same, but the metaverse is coming...

"The metaverse will feel like a hybrid of today’s online social experiences, sometimes expanded into three dimensions or projected into the physical world. It will let you share immersive experiences with other people even when you can’t be together — and do things together you couldn’t do in the physical world. It’s the next evolution in a long line of social technologies, and it’s ushering in a new chapter for our company." ~Mark Zuckerberg

CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Meta, a new company brand for Facebook apps and technologies.

The first pair of smart glasses made by Facebook and Ray-Ban are out. Called Ray-Ban Stories, they’re available almost anywhere Ray-Bans are sold, including LensCrafters and Sunglasses Hut stores. There’s a physical button on the glasses for recording, or you can say “Hey Facebook, take a video” to control them hands-free.

Will you be putting these on your holiday gift list? 🎁❓

Is the world ready for smart glasses powered by Facebook?

🚨 Crisis management tips for online communities 📣

If you are a community manager like me, you already know that running a Facebook group - or any online community anywhere - is not as easy as it sounds. In fact, it rarely is. Depending on which way the wind blows on any given day, you could enter the group you've always known and loved or find yourself in the midst of chaos for any number of reasons. Will you rise to the occasion or let the chips fall where they may?

In this two-part Facebook community series, I offer practical tips honed from experience to help prepare you and your admin team for the unexpected, and sometimes life-altering, disruptions to your community’s day-to-day operations. You will learn about the preventative steps and Facebook tools you can use to set yourself up for success.

Cheers,
Dee Dee, FCCM

As a Facebook Certified Community Manager, you've heard me share about one of my favorite communities before - Virginia Tech Parents. Recently the group and a particularly talented member was highlighted in the spring 2021 issue of Magazine. We are so proud of this member and the heart and spirit of our community as a whole. I'm so lucky to be a part of it, along with an extraordinary admin team whose dedication and compassion are unmatched. Hokie Proud!

Last year I shared about becoming a Facebook Certified Community Manager. I had the unique opportunity to participate on the team at Facebook that developed this certification program which teaches the required skillsets for managing online communities – and as record numbers of consumers moved online in 2020 due to the pandemic, the role of the community manager became exponentially more important.

Out today from Ad Age, this article highlights the value of expertly trained community managers, those of us who work day in and day out to maintain, improve upon and, in some cases, restore reputation. It’s not as easy as it may look. Over the years, I have helped manage communities in crisis, including everything from a bomb threat and a student with an assault weapon, to tragic suicides, fatal accidents and, of course, the pandemic - all which played out online under the watchful eyes of the stakeholders.

My favorite quote in this article: "In good times or bad, having well-trained community managers is the absolute best way to minimize risk." Couldn’t agree more.

With COVID-19 laying siege to brands in the past year, many companies suddenly realized the value of community managers to building strong brands. Long seen as a customer service role, they are the ones on the front lines fighting for the integrity of the brand every day. Here’s why professionally...
