to help keep our legal Maui vacation rentals open for business.
Maui’s Mayor and Governor wants to shut down our legal short-term vacation rentals starting in 2025.
Please let the Mayor’s office know your family prefers a legal short-term rental rather than a hotel. We oppose his ordinance to Eliminate LEGAL Transient Vacation Rentals. The consequence of this measure will eliminate thousands of jobs, over a billion to Maui's budget, and eliminate our contribution to the affordable housing fund.

Dearest Guests,
Maui Governor wants to shut down my vacation rental. And West Maui rentals in 2025 and all other Maui vacation rentals starting in 2026.
We Owners could use your help to keep our rentals open. If you could please email your testimony to [email protected] no later than Monday 6/24/2024 by noon, Hawaii time to oppose Mayor Bissen’s plan. Otherwise, your only rental option will be a more costly hotel with half the room.
Even copying and pasting the following to the [email protected] would be perfect.
We oppose the proposal to Eliminate LEGAL Transient Vacation Rentals in A-1 and A-2 Apartment Zoning Districts AND recommend that the County Council not pursue the draft bill.

Sleeps 4 max, 1 king bed plus 1 queen bed, upgraded full kitchen and inside full-size washer/dryer. Split AC system. The Wailea Ekahi Village is in beautiful South Maui! Our building 6 condo is in the lower village with no roads to cross to reach the golden sandy beach of Keawakapou. Just a short level walk to reach the grand pavilion with a heated pool, community gourmet kitchen, bbq stations and dining tables.

The Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA) announced Friday it approved $2.6 million to help rebuild travel demand from the United States to the accessible areas of Maui and other Hawaiian Islands not affected by the fires. This includes areas of West Side not directly effected by the fires. This is different messaging than was delivered by the Governor shortly after the fires discouraging travel and access through October 17th.
The agency said West Maui accounts for 15% of Hawaii’s total tourism revenue, and since the deadly wildfires, the state has lost roughly $9 million per day because of the resulting drop in travel and tourism.
The Lahaina bypass is open to the public from 6:00 am - 10:00 pm daily. Access roads into Lahaina are closed to the general public with national guard posted at each entry point to monitor entry for resident and relief workers only.
Miles of fencing have been erected around the perimeter of areas directly effected by the fire. Roadways north of the Lahaina bypass are largely open with a few exceptions.
Following this weekends HTA announcement, more business are opening in West Side. Whaler's Village is "open", though a walk through this Saturday found only two dozen cars in the parking garage and very few shops and restaurants operating yet.
Honokowai - The Times Grocer is open, some but not all shops/stores are open, the Farmer's Market near the Beach Park is open though traffic is congested along Lo-Road as the Beach Park is being used as a collection and distribution station.
The strip mall near the El Dorado appears largely open.
In light of the HTA's public comments, this appears to be the week we start to see more focus on avoiding a state wide (and Maui specific) economic downturn.
Businesses are testing re-opening and are hopeful locals, relief workers, and guests alike will come.

Effective Oct. 1, only mineral sunscreens based on active ingredients zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are allowed for sale, distribution or use without a prescription.

The law aims to protect Maui County’s unique reef habitats. Non-mineral sunscreen chemicals are a known pollutant that puts reefs and marine habitats at increased risk and leaves them more vulnerable to climate change impacts.

Over the past several months, the County of Maui’s Environmental Protection and Sustainability Division has been working with businesses and suppliers to help ensure a smooth transition to offering only mineral-based sunscreen products that are safer for the environment. Many businesses with close ties to the ocean environment have already made the switch.

To stay sun safe, especially with Hawaii’s high exposure to ultraviolet radiation, it is recommended that when people are outdoors they cover up with sun protective clothing, seek shade and avoid peak sun exposure times.

Also, because the terms “reef friendly” and “reef safe” are not regulated, consumers are advised to check labels on sunscreen products to see if its list of active ingredients includes zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, natural mineral ingredients. It’s also best to use a mineral-based lotion or stick that you rub onto your skin rather than a spray that can easily land on the sand and wash into the ocean.
