🐋 It's Flukey Friday!

Did you know humpback whales can be identified by their flukes (their tails)? Each whale’s flukes carry unique characteristics that act like a natural ID card.

Researchers focus on features like:
✨ Pigmentation patterns: Black, white, and gray areas form distinctive shapes.
✨ Trailing edge: The serrated edges are marked by nicks, scars, and bumps that remain consistent over time.
✨ Notch shape: The small gap between the two flukes is unique to each whale.
✨ Scars and markings: Barnacle scrapes, predator “rake marks,” and scratches add to their individuality.
