What is mineral sunscreen exactly? 🤔 Mineral-based sunscreens, like Project Reef, use only natural ingredients—zinc oxide and titanium dioxide—as their active components. These ingredients are rated as GRASE (Generally Recognized as Safe & Effective) by the FDA, making them the only sunscreen ingredients with this designation.

In contrast, common chemical sunscreens often contain synthetic compounds that can harm marine life and coral reefs. Here on Maui, non-mineral sunscreens have been banned to protect our precious ecosystem.

It's ! Today, we're diving into the beauty of the Threadfin Butterflyfish, or "Lau Hau" in Hawaiian.

These stunning fish are recognized for their bold black bands and vibrant yellow coloration. Found in tropical coral reefs, they're expert foragers, using their long snouts to scrape algae and hunt for small prey. With a clever eye spot on their back to confuse predators, their tail can easily be mistaken for their head!
