Travel Tip Tuesday

Summertime tips for travelers can be really helpful. Here are some ideas:

Wake up early to capture those special snap shots, before your fellow travelers join you! We all travel somewhere and realize the picture would look so much better without all these people milling about. Enjoy a coffee and watch a sunrise, in silence.

Hydration is Key: Stay hydrated, especially in hot climates. Carry a reusable water bottle and refill it throughout the day. Add electrolytes, like Emergencee.

Sun Protection: Pack and regularly apply sunscreen with a high SPF, wear sunglasses, and a hat to protect yourself from UV rays.

Light Clothing: opt for lightweight, breathable clothing in natural fabrics like cotton or linen to stay cool.

Plan Ahead: Research and book popular attractions and activities in advance to avoid long queues during peak season.

Stay Safe in the Sun: Avoid outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day (usually midday). Seek shade whenever possible.

Bug Protection: Use insect repellent to prevent mosquito bites, especially in tropical or wooded areas. Bugs love me!

Stay Connected: Keep your loved ones informed about your travel plans and stay connected in case of emergencies.

Local Cuisine: Enjoy seasonal fruits and dishes unique to the region you're visiting.

Respect the Environment: Leave no trace when exploring nature. Dispose of waste properly and respect local wildlife.

Stay Flexible: Summer travel often means unpredictable weather. Have a flexible itinerary and be prepared for changes.

Travel Tip Tuesday

Keep a travel drawer or tote in your closet with all your essential converters, neck pillow, scarf/blanket, hand sanitizer, travel bottles and travel bar shampoo and conditioner, recharging battery, eye masks and ear plugs. All those little things you scramble for the night before leaving.

Is it true you can take a frozen bottle of water through security without issue? I will have to try that next trip, or just take an empty bottle and fill at a water station on the other side.

Be strategic with flight cancellations.

If you book a nonrefundable ticket and your plans change, or you know you won’t be traveling on that flight—DO NOT CALL AND CANCEL THE TICKET UNTIL THE LAST POSSIBLE MOMENT.

Or…just don’t show up. Here’s why: in the rare case that there’s a flight cancellation or schedule change, your nonrefundable ticket could entitle you to a credit or refund. Had you cancelled the ticket, you wouldn’t be entitled to anything.

I did this a few years ago, prior to my travel advisor status. I thought I thought I was being responsible, calling in advance to say I wouldn't be on the plane. I told them I would be calling to rebook and change the departure date. What the airline tried to do was pocket the money. Lots of emails and phone calls later I was able to recoup my fare and rebook my flight.

This is another good reason for travel insurance AND purchasing a refundable ticket!

Pack and wear real shoes!!

When in doubt, skip the flippy floppies and put on your travel shoes. You know the shoes- the Goretex, heavy duty, waterproof, snake bite proof, guaranteed to last through a trek to Mordor shoes you just knew you needed? You were right. Now wear them!

Wearing shoes in unfamiliar territory will save you smashed toes, split toenails, and probably an infection. Hopping on a plane? The crew is doing their best to lose your luggage for you, so make sure you aren’t stuck in flip flops. If you’re flip flopping (HA!) between sandals and shoes before you go visit a waterfall, temple, or a local market, I promise you that you’ll never be upset that you wore shoes.

This topic was recently posed to me, and I thought I would share my response. The comparison to value vs. cost. We have all planned vacations, that work within our wallets, but let's talk about this further.

1. Experience Value: Think about what experiences you want from the trip. Whether it’s exploring new places, trying local cuisine, or meeting people, these intangible benefits contribute significantly to the overall value.

2. Accommodation and Transportation: Compare accommodation options (hotels, Airbnb, etc.) based on comfort, location, and price. Similarly, consider transportation costs (flights, trains, or road trips) and weigh them against convenience and time saved.

3. Activities and Attractions: Research activities and attractions at your destination. Some might be free or low-cost (e.g., hiking trails, public parks), while others could be pricier (museums, theme parks). Prioritize based on personal interest.

4. Food and Dining: Food is an integral part of travel. Balance dining out at restaurants with local street food or grocery shopping. Sometimes, the best meals are affordable and authentic.

5. Travel Insurance: While it adds to the cost, travel insurance provides peace of mind. Consider factors like medical coverage, trip cancellation protection, and emergency assistance.

The overall cost may outweigh the once in a lifetime adventure.

Travel Tip Tuesday

You may have heard this tip before: avoid culture shock by starting with "easy" countries first. Before you grab your pitchfork and scream "Lies!", let me tell you all the reasoning behind it:

Things get more interesting the further East you travel. London isn't nearly as interesting after Istanbul. Bangkok will rewrite your definition of what normal can be.

Things also get cheaper the further East you travel (for the most part). If you don't do expensive Nordic/EU countries early on you may find your funds are a bit on the short toward the end of your trip.

Do it all is my motto but be realistic and be prepared.

Hire a local guide during the first day of your trip in a foreign city.
It’ll help you get the lay of the land. Then ask your guide for non-touristy recommendations to hit up during the rest of your trip. Also: if you’re traveling with a big group, DEFINITELY hire a guide. It takes the pressure off of one person being put in charge of the itinerary.

I always want to see as many things as I can in a short period of time.

Today's topic: Star Ratings!

In many European countries, tourism officials inspect hotels and assign star ratings based on a comprehensive list of criteria. These criteria mainly focus on the services and amenities offered by the hotel.
The more criteria a hotel meets, the higher its score and star rating. Inspectors check off features such as elevators, private baths, cable TV, and other amenities.
That said, stars also influence the rates to stay at the hotel.

So, if you are ok with a shared bathroom for example or no A/C, you can find a small but perfectly fine place to stay near attractions.
Something to consider on my next venture on a budget!

Yes, in the past I did not purchase travel insurance. I was young and, if something happened, I would suck it up ! But then Covid struck, and that vacation I had planned in France, well, I lost my money.

Travel Insurance is a Good thing!
