Happy National Disability Independence Day! On this special day, we want to shed light on some aspects of disabilities at work and in our communities:
๐ 1. Non-Apparent Disabilities: Many people live with non-apparent disabilities. This includes conditions like chronic pain, diagnoses encompassing neurodiversity, and more. The key is to be empathetic and try not to make assumptions, you seriously never know.
โ๏ธ 2. Access โ Inclusion: While a ramp into the building is a fantastic start, true inclusion means integrating individuals with disabilities into every facet of business. Foster a culture that values diversity in thought, abilities, and life experiences.
๐ข 3. Office Barriers: Believe it or not, many standard offices have multiple barriers. From open office plans and background noise to lighting, itโs essential to be aware, adaptable and make reasonable accommodations.
โฐ 4. The Power in Flexibility: Not everyone thrives in a typical 9-5 setting. Offering flexibility in hours and environ, i.e. Remote, can be a game-changer for many.
๐ 5. Continuous Learning: Being aware of disabilities and how to be supportive is a great start but it isnโt innate. It comes from a willingness to continuously learn and understand new things. Make a point to invest in regular development and allyship.
Through deliberate and continuous efforts, not just today but everyday, to build more inclusive work spaces and communities we can ensure everyoneโs voices and ideas have a chance to shine their brightest!
