Completed in 1901, The Elms was the summer home of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Julius Berwind. Mr. Berwind built his fortune on the vast coal industry that powered America’s rise to global prominence.
Designed by architect Horace Trumbauer and modeled after the 18th-century French Château d’Asnières outside Paris, The Elms reflects the Berwinds’ desire for European sophistication and their extraordinary wealth.
