⚔️ The Battle of Fredericksburg, fought this week 162 years ago on December 11-15, 1862, was one of the largest and deadliest of the Civil War.  It featured the first major opposed river crossing in military history, the first urban combat, the first bombardment of a city, and with 200,000 combatants, the largest concentration of soldiers on a battlefield.

⚔️ Fredericksburg is home to Chatham Manor, the only private home visited by Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and Roosevelt, which also served as the Union HQ during the battle of Fredericksburg.

❤️The town is also home to some of the most historic houses in America, among them: the John Paul Jones House-“Father of the American Navy”, Ferry Farm-George Washington’s childhood home, Kenmore -Betty Washington’s Home, Mary Washington’s home, Revolutionary War hero and physician Brigadier General Huge Mercer’s Apothecary, and even James Monroe’s Law Office.

❓Most people don’t know, but at the intersection of Annas Lane and Taylorstown Rd, the entrance of , you’ll find one of the oldest homes in Loundoun Co, coincidentally, the home of Virginia’s first female judge, whose legacy extends beyond the courtroom to environmental advocacy in Loudoun County.

👩 Anna Fancher Hedrick, was appointed substitute judge in Arlington, Virginia, in 1930. Her trailblazing career marked a pivotal moment in the state’s legal history, coming just a few years after the 19th Amendment granted women the right to vote in 1920.

👩‍🎓Her groundbreaking appointment inspired generations of women to pursue careers in law and judicial roles, earning her recognition as a pioneer in breaking gender barriers in Virginia’s judiciary. As one of the first women in a predominantly male profession, Judge Hedrick likely faced considerable challenges and skepticism. Nevertheless, her competence and dedication solidified the credibility of women in the judiciary.

🌻Affectionately known as “Miss Anna,” her contributions extended far beyond the courtroom. She is also remembered for her environmental advocacy in Loudoun Co, where she championed the protection of waterways, open spaces, and natural ecosystems.

🍇Her efforts to preserve the environment likely played a role in maintaining the agricultural quality of the region, which has since supported thriving vineyards and cemented Loudoun Co’s reputation as a premier wine destination. This environmental ethos aligns with today’s focus on ecotourism and cultural heritage preservation, benefiting the wine industry by attracting visitors drawn to the area’s scenic beauty and rural charm.

🏘️The tiny village of Taylorstown, where the home is located, is rich in history and nestled within a vibrant wine region. Several renowned wineries are nearby, each offering unique experiences and contributing to the area’s growing reputation as a top wine destination. Together, these wineries and their scenic landscapes create a perfect setting for enjoying both the region’s history and its wines.

✨ Wine Travel Stories: Clifton, Virginia – A Town Born of Wild Grapes🍇

In the heart of Virginia lies Clifton, a quaint town with a fascinating past and a deep connection to wine. Back in 1861, during the Civil War, this area was known as Devereux Station, the southernmost point of the Union army’s railroad system. Amidst the soldiers and tracks, history was quietly brewing—or rather, growing.

Legend has it that one evening, Harrison G. Otis, a New Yorker traveling on the Orange and Alexandria Railroad, stuck his head out for some fresh air. What did he hear? The squeals of wild hogs feasting on an abundance of native grapes. Inspired, Otis returned, planting vineyards on the western side of town. Though his vineyards didn’t flourish, Otis left a lasting legacy, modernizing the railroad and turning Clifton into a pioneering little town. Clifton became the first in Fairfax County to have electricity, a high school, and a winery.

Fast forward to today: Clifton is home to Paradise Springs Winery, lovingly called “The Gateway to Virginia Wine Country.” 🍷 Set in a serene, wooded landscape, this family-owned winery blends rustic charm with modern elegance. Sip on award-winning reds, whites, and blends while taking in the picturesque views. The historic 1800s log cabin and spacious tasting room set the stage for a perfect escape.

✨ Ready to explore Clifton’s rich history and exceptional wine? Let us take you there! Book your spot on any of our multidimensional wine tours and enjoy a seamless, curated experience visiting top wineries like Paradise Springs. 🍇 Sit back, relax, and let us handle the details—reservations, introductions, and the perfect itinerary.

“It’s taken me a week to come down from cloud 9 after the experience with Hipstoricdc’s private wine tour on 11/13/24. We were blessed to have the company’s founder, Carlos, as our chauffeur and wine tour guide. Carlos is nothing short of amazing and exceeded our expectations in every way. He is incredibly knowledgeable about the history of Virginia’s Wine Country and about the production of wine. Carlos is timely, accommodating, responsive, and committed to customer service excellence. Carlos is thoughtful, insightful, and funny! All of this feedback is my objective feedback about our exceptional wine tour experience in comparison to many other wine tours we’ve taken over the years. And now for the Big Bang…

My fiance coordinated with Carlos to propose to me at Hillsborough Vineyards. He surprised me and got down on one knee during our stroll in the vineyards and Carlos was right there to capture every second of the proposal on video. He also took the most magnificent photos! The proposal experience could not have been more perfect, romantic, and beautiful without Carlos helping to execute. We are forever grateful and forever friends!

Thank you Carlos (and thanks to your business and life partner Brenda) of Hipstoridc for an unforgettable and invaluable Wine Country experience! Cheers to you!🍷”.

The Willard Hotel- On Tuesday, April 11, 1865, General Ulysses S. Grant arrived in the nation’s capital in the afternoon after being summoned by Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. He was accompanied by two staff officers, Brig. Gen. John A. Rawlins and Lt. Col. Cyrus B. Comstock, and his 14-year-old-son, Fred. An official delegation was supposed to meet Grant upon his arrival but somehow failed to do so. While the two staff officers went directly to the War Department to report that Grant was in town, the general and his son walked to Willard’s Hotel, two blocks from the White House, to inquire about lodgings.

The Willard’s was the best known hotel in the city. It was normal to see civilian and military celebrities conducting government business in the hotel lobby and bar. So many high-ranking Army officers had frequented the place during the past three years that the nondescript, soft-spoken Grant appeared to be just another dime-a-dozen general traveling through Washington on his way home or back to the front. One regular at the hotel described Grant as having the look “of a man who did, or once did, take a little too much to drink.” The registration clerk must have had the same impression. When the general, who was wearing a plain linen duster that hid his uniform, inquired about the availability of accommodations, the clerk replied with patronizing indifference. He offered Grant a cramped room on the top floor. Grant said that would be fine and signed the register.

The clerk’s demeanor changed in an instant when he glanced at the signature written on the hotel register: “U.S. Grant and Son, Galena, Illinois.” The clerk suddenly realized that the dusty general who appeared so seedy to one onlooker was the most successful Union battlefield commander in the war.

🍷 WINE TRAVEL STORIES 🍷

⚔️The day before GW’s resignation ceremony in Annapolis on December 1783, Congress hosted a dinner in Washington’s honor at the Mann’s Tavern for over 200 guests.

🏠The tavern had been the preferred lodging location for Thomas Jefferson & James Monroe when they were in town working on ratifying the Treaty of Peace proposed by Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and John Jay.

🍺That evening glasses were raised in thirteen toasts beginning with “to the United States”, and ending with “to the long health and happiness of our ilustours General”. The tavern bill that night was of $644 or around $15,000 on today’s money, and Congress described the evening as “the entertainment being exceedingly plentiful”, and “the provisions and liquors good in their kind”.

🏛️The next morning everyone gathered at the State House to witness this historic event. The Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army, George Washington, stunned the world when he surrender his sword and resigned his commission, indeed the greatest act of his life. In England, upon learning of Washington’s resignation, King George III reportedly said:“If Washington does that, he will be the greatest man in the world.”

🏠The original tavern, facing Main Street, became the Colonial Theater and was destroyed by fire in 1919.

👆This building, built as George Mann’s residence about 1789, was incorporated into the tavern complex in 1801, and by the mid -1800’s it was known as the city hotel. It is the sole remaining building of the Mann’s Tavern complex, and it has been owned by the Freemasons in Annapolis since 1900. Today is the home site of the Annapolis Lodge No. 89.

❤️ Nowadays, Annapolis boasts a charming array of historic taverns blending Colonial-era charm with modern waterfront flair, where our guests enjoy lunch before continuing their one-of-kind adventure exploring the region’s amazing wineries & breweries.
Cheers!
