Jambo,
I have had a few questions about COVID-19 and how it would it would affect your being on a safari. I will pass on what I know which is based on today and not what we may see down the road. Vaccinations will change a few things.
The safari will be in East Africa’s Tanzania. The East Africa region (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Burundi, Rwanda) has a little more than half the population as the U.S. It is not much of a secret that the U.S. has done poorly in the handling of the pandemic with almost 25 million cases and over 405,000 deaths. Africa as a whole has had 1/7th the total of cases the U.S. has had with South Africa far and away the highest. Tanzania hasn’t reported their numbers for the last few months so I don’t have any current statistics. However, the entire East Africa region has reported a total of 150,000 cases with 2200 deaths.
This is supposition on my part but one reason their numbers could be so low is their tribes and populations can be more isolated and are more self-reliant than ours. Keeping their exposure to COVID-19 to a minimum.
Tourism Now
Getting there – best two ways to go to Arusha, Tanzania (JRO airport) are via Amsterdam on KLM or from JFK on Kenya Airways through Nairobi, Kenya. Both stops are transit only - not allowed to leave the airport. Wearing a mask is required for the duration of your flight on all airlines and in all airports. When you arrive JRO, you will have a temperature check and need to present a Negative COVID-19 test that was taken within 72 hours of arrival. Mask wearing is required for moving around public areas and all hotels and lodges. When you first meet your guides everyone will be wearing a mask. The lodges in the three parks are on their own with limited movement from the staff anywhere else but on the immediate property. Other lodges will be several miles away. The Serena Lodge in Arusha is also somewhat isolated with its location on the edge of Arusha. It sits between a coffee plantation on one side and a lake on the other. While we do have a scheduled outing in Arusha on the first day it can and will be adjusted according to where we are in the pandemic. You will, obviously, see other tourists in the lodges but for the most part it can be pretty isolated.
