MALA RUMBA AT LA OSTERIA IN SAN JOSE DEL CABO. La Osteria is offering regular live entertainment on several nights a week. Monday night features Mala Rumba a four-piece band with lead and rhythm guitars, a flute player and a percussionist. Classified as flamenco or rumba rock, the band performs both classical flamenco and Mexican songs and rock hits with a flamenco twist. They are excellent musicians. Most of their performance is instrumental but the rhythm guitarist provides vocals on some the songs.

Here is their version of the Rocky Theme Song. Enjoy!

LIMONETTO RESTAURANTE IN THE ART DISTRICT. For months we have watched the construction across from El Encanto Inn & Suites on Jose Maria Morelos in the Art District in San Jose del Cabo in the former location of Barrio Burger. This new Italian restaurant has a very nice design With stone along the back wall around the open kitchen, an incredible tile mural on the wall to the right of the entry and pergolas with hanging lemon vines, the outdoor dining area is extremely pleasant. the view of the kitchen shows their wood-fired oven with firewood stacked in the front of the counter before the kitchen. There is an upstairs private dining area that can accommodate about 15 people as well. The restaurant has seating for a total of about 60 people with tables accommodating two, four, six, or eight. A large bar is featured on the left side of the restaurant. There is also a small deli at the front just inside the entry to the left that is open during the day offering coffees and beverages, pizza, several salads, and more.

We were greeted at the door and led to our table in the center of the restaurant. During construction they had kept the large tree that was in the middle of the lot, adding to the atmosphere. We were offered the menu and asked what we would like to drink. For the first course, the menu offers several raw seafood and beef items - oysters, clams, tuna tartar, beef tartar - antipasti, ranging from mussels to cold cuts, eggplant, risotto balls, and seared octopus. There are also two salad choices. For main courses, the menu offers risotto, several pastas, fish, salmon, several beef dishes and of course, pizza from the wood-fired oven. The chef, Gigigo is from Naples and so, the preparation are Napoli style.

For appetizers, we selected the Aracino (risotto and mushrooms in a deep-fried shell, Mussel stew, and Tuna Tartar. While we were waiting the server brought us a plate of three different types of fresh rolls with a large ramekin of butter. The Tuna Tartar Bruschetta were very interesting as they were served on a mini wood-fired grill, and were delicious. Everyone loved their appetizers and the rolls, and we did a little sharing. For the main course, pasta and pizzas were our selections. Jim and I chose the Tortellini stuffed with mushroom ragu and served with a 22-month parmesan cream sauce and truffles. It was amazing. Jackie selected the Pappardelle pasta with sausage in a pesto sauce. Beth chose the linguine with lobster, garlic and cherry tomatoes. The lobster was large and in the shell. The last choice was a pizza with Italian sausage, mushrooms, truffles, and smoked provolone cheese.

Someone was having a 30th birthday party and the restaurant and arrived with big balloons of a 3 and 0. The restaurant had only been open for a week but was full by the time that we were finishing our early dinner. I was seated so that I could watch the chef at work in the kitchen and he was very particular with the preparation and plating of each dish.

Overall, the food flavors and portions were very good, the service was friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere is special, with a lot of care taken in the design of the restaurant.

BRO SYSTEMS INSTALLS WIFI EXTENDER IN TODOS SANTOS CONDO. Ab Garnica of Bro Systems that have installed our Internet systems in Zacatitos, San Jose del Cabo and Todos Santos came to install a WiFi Extender in our condos in Todos Santos. My daughter decided to move to Todos Santos, and as she works remotely, she needs great Internet. I had installed the Starlink router outside on the deck of our first floor condo to cover it and our other unit directly above. While it provided good coverage in the living rooms, it did not provide sufficient speed in the bedroom where she had set up her desk.

I ordered Netgear Orbi WiFi Extenders and Ab ran the wires from Starlink router to through the concrete walls in both units to place the extenders above an linen closet in the hallway in each unit. Unfortunately, it turned out that I had bought the wrong Netgear units, which were only usable with cable internet - not satellite with ethernet connections. I had also purchased the ethernet connector for Starlink. Luckily, Ab carries lots of parts and equipment in his van and brought in an alternative WiFi Extender system. They installed the system.

We tested it in the upstairs condo where the Internet speed prior to the Wifi extender installation was 55.72 for downloads and after it had increased to 224.24. Perfect for her to work.

LA OSTERIA IN SAN JOSE DEL CABO. Located on the street behind La Comer, beside its sister restaurant, Lateral is La Osteria. This Italian oriented restaurant has both indoor and outdoor seating, with a wood-fired oven outdoors for pizza and bakery items. The menu offers salads and appetizers to start including a several fresh seafood items. The main courses range from hamburgers to steak, surf and turf, fish, and a few of pasta dishes. The other side of the menu provides a list of the items available from the wood-fired oven including baked brie, a portobello mushroom and 13 different pizzas. There is a lot from which to choose.

We selected a table in the outside dining area as La Osteria also has live music several nights a week and we want to listen to the band. We ordered our drinks - Chardonnay for me and Limonada Minerale for Beth. For appetizers, I choose the Baked Brie from the wood-fired oven and Beth asked for Caesar Salad with the fresh parmesan on the side. The baked brie came with a full garlic clove that had been cut in half and cooked in the oven and toasted fresh bread. It was amazing, and a great portion for two or more people. The dressing on the Caesar Salad was very good, and it was served with shaved cauliflower on the top. Again, the portion was big enough to share.

For main courses, I ordered the Truffled Linguine, which had zucchini and mushrooms in a truffle sauce. Beth ordered the Rigatoni Rose with Burrata Cheese. There was a very large piece of burrata on top of the rigatoni with a light rose sauce. We were not disappointed - the flavors were great - and a plate of fresh bread was provided to accompany the pasta.

During our meal, we greatly enjoyed the instrumental stylings of Mala Rumba - a four-piece band with two guitars, a flute and a percussionist. The lead guitarist was amazing. They offered a mixture of flamenco and Mexican stylings to a wide range of popular rock songs, as well as some traditional Mexican music. A great band that we look forward to seeing again.

Despite being full from our appetizers and main courses, we decided to try their desserts. The dessert menu a select of seven items including several sorbets, flan, a corn cake, a chocolate cake. Beth ordered the Green Apple Sorbet, and I selected the chocolate cake with ice cream. A very nice way to end our evening.

The food was very good, the service excellent, and all in a very pleasant environment with great music.

COLLEGE PREP CLASSES WITH MONARCH EFFECT FOUNDATION. The Monarch Effect Foundation received official charitable status in Mexico just over a year ago. The Foundation was founded by Elizabeth and Alberto Fernandez, Lisa Heid and Eric Parizek with the support of Martin Waldbaum specifically to help high-potential Mexican high-school students to get a world class university education. Students in Mexico face the reality that an expensive university education is outside the realm of possibility for most as there are no low interest loans available for students in Mexico. The Monarch Effect Foundation helps to bridge this gap.

But an equally important challenge for these high-potential students is that most have never travelled outside of Mexico or lived away from their families. As a result, one of the very important roles that the Foundation offers is a two-semester college prep course for qualified students who may to supported by the organization in the future. Unlike most college prep programs in the United States or Canada, this is not academic preparation as much as it is life preparation for going away to college to country with a different culture, a different language, and no friends or family. Held three Wednesday afternoons a month in a classroom at Picacho McGregor School on the corridor and taught by volunteers from a variety of professions the course covers a wide range of subjects including: Academic Excellence; Community Engagement and Leadership; Career Exploration and Mentorship; Practical Life Skills (time management and personal development) and a Graduation Segment including a final video project.

I recently attended one of the sessions on Negotiation and Conflict Resolution. It was led by both Nico, a current second year Foundation student at an international business school in London and Joaquin, a lawyer and father of one of the other student's currently being supported. The team leaders presented an informative PowerPoint with great examples from everyday life and even held a negotiation exercise to demonstrate how to negotiate to a win-win solution. A dozen students from five different high schools in Los Cabos have enrolled in this program. The content was very good, the participation of the students excellent and the potential to learn and practice new skills and important part of the two hours.

The Monarch Effect Foundation is currently working with 21 students both those support at university now and high school students preparing for their future. Students in London, Paris, Lisbon, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and mainland Mexico hold peer-to-peer mentoring sessions with current high school students identified for support. The combination of college prep and peer-to-peer mentor is hoped to truly prepare students to travel for a great university education.

The student support by the Foundation and their families also commit to give back through mentoring, volunteering, speaking, internship programs and more.

OSTERIA 107 WITH FRIENDS. Two friends were visiting Los Cabos to have dental work done at Dental Studio by Pedro Ortiz from Portland and Denver and so, we decided to get together and go out for a good Italian meal at Osteria 107 in downtown San Jose del Cabo. We were greeted at the door by the owner and manager, Cristiano, who also has restaurants in Playa Del Carmen and Tulum in the Yucatan. As if we would prefer to sit indoors or outdoors, we chose to go inside. The restaurant is beautifully designed with a bar, indoor dining room and a large outdoor patio next to the kitchen. The menu provided a full range of Italian choices - appetizers including wood-fired focaccia, salads, risotto, homemade pastas, meat, fish and chicken dishes, and wood-fired pizzas. There were also a few specials shown on a blackboard.

We ordered our drinks and looked through the menu. We ordered two Caesar Salads to start, one with the fresh parmesan cheese on the side. We also ordered the bruschetta to share for the table. The final appetizer to share was a plate of calamari with vegetables. The Caesar dressing at Osteria 107 is excellent as were both the bruschetta and calamari. For main courses, I selected the special pasta with salmon, which was amazing. Beth chose the Tagliatelle Bolognese. While Carbonara was not on the menu, they agreed to make it for Bill. Mike ordered the risotto with shrimps and asparagus. By the time, we were finished eating, everyone was much too full for dessert.

Cristiano came by the table to see how we enjoyed our meal, and we all told him that it was great. The food, presentation, service and atmosphere are first rate at Osteria 107.

LOUD SOUND IN CABO SAN LUCAS. Located behind Office Depot off Highway 19 in Cabo San Lucas on Alfred Lopez Mateo, Loud Sound is one of the few places to get upgraded car stereo and video systems in Los Cabos. The owner has over 20 years of experience installing high-end systems. The shop carries many of the top brands (e.g., Kenwood, Boss, Cadence, Phoenix Gold, Clarion, Audio Labs, JVC) in car audio and has a great selection of head units, speakers, amplifiers, sub-woofers, video and security accessories. It is clear from looking at some of their installations that they are extremely competent in the design and installation of complicated sound systems for cars and boats. Their shop area in the back was filled with ongoing custom installations.

Loud Sound had installed my Sony stereo and SiriusXM system in my Toyota Tundra in late 2019. Recently, the signal for Sirius satellite had been going in and out. The speakers, which were originals in the 2005 truck were also not sound as good anymore. I also decided that it would be a good idea to have a back-up camera to get in and out of tight parking spots. So, I made an appointment to have the work done at Loud Sound. I delivered the Toyota at 10:00 am on a Saturday and then said that they would call me when it was ready. Just after 12:00, I check back with them and the installer showed me the condition of the speaker and the damage to the antenna for the SiriusXM system that was causing the problem. We selected the speakers to replace those in both the front and back doors. The installer went back to work.

The installation looked great, the sound was better than it had ever been with the new speakers. The back-up camera was installed around the back license plate and gave a great view as soon as the truck was put in reverse and Sirius was once again working.

This is a great high-end mobile audio dealer, with professional installation at a reasonable price. I continue to be impressed.

JAZZMANGO CAFE IN TODOS SANTOS. Located on the main street of Todos Santos (Benito Juarez) through Erza Katz Gallery is Jazzmango Cafe. Created by Chef Javier Plascencia of Jazzmango Farm to Table, the cafe received a full renovation last year. There is seating in a patio by the kitchen as well as in several tiers in the garden. I went recently for lunch with Ezra Katz (offered from 1:30 to 4:30 pm). The menu offers an interesting combination of Mexican - Baja Tacos, Pork Pibil, Guacamole, Fried plantain - and American items - Beef and Chicken burgers, Grilled Cheese, Turkey Panini - as well as some vegetarian and vegan items - Spinach and Kale Salad, Tofu Spring Roll, Avocado Toast.

I chose the Baja Fish Tacos and Erza had the Prime Burger, which came with French Fries and lettuce and tomatoes. The Baja Fish Tacos were covered with sliced carrots, cabbage, onions, and radishes, and served with three ramekins of guacamole, chipotle sauce, and salsa. The flavors were great, the service very good and the atmosphere very pleasant.

Great place for a relaxing lunch while visiting Todos Santos.

CHRIS PAULSON VALENTINE. We were lucky enough to have Chris Paulson join us at the pool in Pueblo Campestre Phase 2 to perform after our homeowner's meeting. Chris has been a wandering minstrel for over 35 years playing in plazas and parks around the world. He spends his summers at his home in France and visiting his son and grandchild in Germany and his winters at his home in Todos Santos. Chris performs Monday nights at La Morena and often joins other great musicians at Bezos de Mezcal in Pescadero, Poke Loko and Landi's in Las Tunas. Chris also offers sunset concerts on the roof of his home, Casa Barbara with special guests. His repertoire of folk, rock, blues, and R & B always guarantees a great evening of entertainment.

Here is his version W***y Nelson’s, Valentine. Enjoy!

A BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AT EL GRILL IN SAN JOSE DEL CABO. Located on the frontage road going south on the highway before the light before Walmart, El Grill is our favorite Mediterranean restaurant in Los Cabos. Waleed, the chef and owner is from Northern Iraq and was a chef in Cyprus, Greece, and London before moving to Los Cabos with his soon to be Mexican wife, Blanca. The menu at El Grill is regularly refreshed and includes lots of standard Greek dishes. It offers appetizers like Hummus, Domades, Spinakopita, Tatziki, Tapenade, and more. There are salads, soups and pita pizza. For the main courses, El Grill offers pasta, chicken, beef, lamb, and steaks and seafood.

Six of us were there for dinner to celebrate our friend's birthday. It was a very early dinner as Ethan did not want to drive back to Shipwrecks on the East Cape in the dark. To start, we ordered several appetizers to share for the table including a Greek potato salad, and tapenade and tabouli with warm pita bread. The Greek potato salad is made with olive oil rather than mayonnaise and includes tomatoes, onions and greens. It is delicious. The dips are always great. In fact, I order them to pick up whenever we are going to a neighbor's for dinner.

For main courses the choices ranged across the menu. I selected the Manitari pasta with white wine and mushrooms. Beth chose the Prasino - a shrimp with pesto and pasta. Ethan, the birthday boy selected the chicken parmegiana with eggplant. Larry ordered the curry chicken and Carol had the vegetarian falafel, served with a small Greek salad. The table was silent for as everyone dug into their main courses. We did a little sharing to try the dishes chosen by others. The food was excellent and the wine and mezcalitas flowed. Everyone was too full to consider dessert.

The food, service and atmosphere at El Grill are always great and the prices are very reasonable.

CAR MAINTENANCE AND REPAIR RAFFI'S SOLUTIONS. With an older Toyota Tundra truck, there is always some work to be done. Recently, the horn started to blast when we weren't even near the car. The pulled the wire out from the horn itself, which stopped the noise but also made the horn non-operable. Several weeks later when the truck had been sitting for 10 days, the battery was completely dead. I assumed that the short in the horn was draining the battery and as long as I was driving everyday it was not a problem.

I needed a quick, fix but I knew that the battery was probably too dead to just jump. I contacted Rafael at Raffi's Solutions, who works at the Campestre Golf Course. He came over, we tried to jump the battery but as I suspected it didn't work. He offered to take the battery, charge it overnight at home and return. I asked him if he would also do some other work on the truck - replace the door pull inside on the driver's side, which had broken; re-glue the upholstery on the same door, which had come loose; find and fix the short in the horn and adjust the back window on the top of the truck bed.

When he returned with the battery, he replaced it and took the truck to fix the other items. Raffi has been working on cars with his father since he was very young and races on weekends. When he returned the car all of the repairs were done, and the engine had been thoroughly cleaned.

Raffi also has a team of people who work with him to do home maintenance at very reasonable prices. The most impressive thing is his attitude. I asked how he prices his projects. He said, "Many Mexicans when they see blue eyes, substantially increase the price. I want to be fair to everyone - local or expat." He also says that if you need to buy a Razer, or a car, he will get it or sell your car, your house, furniture, land, everything you need to sell that will help you.

You can contact him on WhatsApp at +52 1 624 145 5410 or contact his wife Diana of Om Spa on WhatsApp +52 1 624 237 4231 to get an estimate of your maintenance needs.

STOP LIGHT COMIDA MEXICANA. Located on Adolfo Lopez Mateos Street (behind the Office Depot) off the Highway 19 bypass of Cabos San Lucas in Stop Light Comida Mexicana. I was at Loud Sound down the street having work done on the stereo system on my Toyota Tundra and needed someplace to wait and have breakfast. I walked down the street and found Stop Light Comida Mexicana, a very pleasant and comfortable restaurant. I chose a table for two and the server provided me with a menu that had a wide range of breakfast items at very reasonable prices (most under $150 mx). The menu offered omelets, 11 different egg dishes, nine Chilaquiles, hot cakes, French toast, five different special breakfasts and a fruit plate.

I ordered a fresh squeezed orange juice to start and asked for Huevos a la Mexican. The served asked me if I would like flour or corn tortillas or a mixture. The orange juice was great. My Huevos a la Mexicana came and there were the scrambled eggs with tomatoes, onions and peppers, refried beans, roasted potatoes and some grilled peppers and onions. The portion was large and the flavors excellent. I took out a very hot flour tortilla and made myself a burrito with eggs and refried beans. I sat and enjoyed the breakfast and two more glasses of orange juice for over an hour. It was terrific.

MAKING OUR KITCHEN MORE USABLE. When we purchased our townhouse in Pueblo Campestre Phase 2 we made three major changes to the design - the upper cabinets were taken to the ceiling; a small pantry was added beside the refrigerator and we chose white upper and green lower cabinets. We also added a small island to match the lower cabinets. After two years, it was clear that some of the storage was not working well. Especially, the small pantry where it required digging everything out to find out what was in the back. Also, one of the big lower cabinets where small appliances were stored was not function.

We contacted Sergio Almazan of Home Maintenance and Improvement by Eduardo who came over to measure the lower half of the pantry to convert the shelves into pull out shelves and to add an additional shelf. When he returned with the necessary parts and the new shelf, we provided him with the left-over paint from the lower cabinets. He installed the shelves with the lip facing up, added the new shelf and added a shelf in the large open lower cabinet as well.

After letting the paint dry, the pantry and appliance cabinet were refilled and became fully functional. We were able to organize the pantry and view everything easily on each of the four shelves. It is a wonderful addition. Thank you, Sergio, for the great and prompt solution to our problem.

The History Leading to Enjoy Los Cabos Life

Having been a part-time resident of Los Cabos since 1992, we have seen tremendous changes to the region. In the early days, roads were washed out every year; there were few places to shop and even the restaurants were limited. Now, Los Cabos is truly an international resort destination. For those of us who live here many of the difficulties of day-to-day living are gone. Costco, Home Depot, Walmart and great grocery stores have arrived. Some don’t like the development but tourism has brought many benefits to Los Cabos.

We decided to launch Enjoy Los Cabos Life because there really are few outlets that provide much more than listings of where to go and what to do. Much of the information has also focused primarily on Cabo San Lucas rather than all five regions of Los Cabos - The East Cape, San Jose del Cabo, the Corridor between San Jose and Cabo San Lucas, Cabo San Lucas and the Pacific side including Todos Santos. Over time, we hope to be able to provide good information, photos, videos and interviews that will showcase the places, people and lifestyles available in Los Cabos. We hope to launch a full website (enjoyloscaboslifestyle.com) late in 2019. If you have comments and suggestions, please email us at [email protected]
