PANACHE EUROPEAN RESTAURANT IN CABO SAN LUCAS. One of our favorite restaurants in Cabo San Lucas is Panache. They recently changed locations from their smaller space to the space previously occupied by Italian Job. Taking a slight right off the main street when you see the Panache sign, the restaurant is only a half a block up on the right and has valet parking.

The new location provides several advantages for Panache - it is larger with more tables, a bigger kitchen, and air conditioning during the summer. We were greeted at the curb by Brenda, the owner and the valet took the car to park it. A double table for four was waiting for us. Our companions, Rick and Lianne had never been to the restaurant before. While the space is better, everything else - food quality, flavor and presentation and service - remain the same - excellent.

We were offered the menus, which feature a combination of French and Italian cuisine on two sides and ordered our drinks. Rick and Lianne had red wine while I ordered a glass of the French Chardonnay, Maison Castel that is offered by the glass. A tray with fresh rolls and butter was placed on the table. We nibbled, sipped and reviewed the menu. Our server asked if we would like to order appetizers. Rick and Lianne decided to share the Burrata Salad. Beth ordered the Caesar Salad, with the fresh parmesan on the side, and I ordered the deviled eggs. There are a lot of other appetizers and salads available on the menu - escargot, stuffed portobello mushrooms, artichokes, and a charcuterie and cheese board. The portions sizes are large enough that you can share any of the items on the menu. We talked as we ate the appetizers, tasting each other's choice too.

When we were finished our appetizers, the server asked if we were ready to order our main courses. That is one of the great things about Panache, they are not going to rush you in and out of the restaurant. Beth's favorite is the Steak Frites served with their pistachio sauce and crispy French Fries. I chose the Chicken Cordon Bleu. Rick ordered the Pork Shank after I described it, and Lianne decided on the Blossom Pumpkin and Mushroom Tortellini. The presentation of the food is magnificent, and it is matched by the flavor. The portion sizes are so large that we each took half of our entrées home to have for dinner the next day. Rick said that pork tacos were in his future with the pork that just fell off the shank, it was so tender.

The whole table shared the huge square of Tiramisu for dessert. I thanked Brenda was the great evening as our car was brought back by the valet. As always, even at this time of year, the restaurant was busy, and tables turned with very happy guests while we were there.

For more information about Panache visit them on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/panacherestaurant The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day.

HOME MAINTENANCE RAFFI SOLUTIONS. I first noticed Rafi when he was refinishing the pergola over a neighbor's deck in his driveway in Pueblo Campestre. A few days later if found my battery completely dead in my Toyota Tundra and reached out for help to get it started. It turned out that the battery was so dead that it could not be jumped. Raffi took the battery out of his car so the truck would start and then replaced mine so I could drive to Formula Uno to replace the battery. It was a lifesaver.

I later learned that Raffi does a lot of maintenance for homeowners throughout Campestre. One of our neighbors asked, "How did you find him, you don't golf?" It turns out that he oversees the caddies at the Campestre Golf Course. However, for the last three years, he and his team of associates have been doing all kinds of work throughout the neighborhood. His projects include working on cars - his father is a car racer and so his has learned by his side over the past 25 years how to repair mechanical and bodywork on cars. With a crew of associates, he can repair electrical, plumbing, air conditioning, metal work, and all types of regular maintenance and improvements to your home, car or boat.

I asked Raffi for some examples of the type of work that they do. He provided photos of resealing the roof of a house, creating block patios, cleaning and repairing cars and off-road vehicles, refinishing woodwork, maintaining boats, sealing and staining pergolas, installing cameras and hurricane protection. He also says that if you need to buy a Razer, or a car, he will get it or sell your car, your house, furniture, land, everything you need to sell that will help you.

The most impressive thing is his attitude. I asked how he prices his projects. He said, "Many Mexicans when they see blue eyes, substantially increase the price. I want to be fair to everyone - local or expat." Even today, on a Sunday, he is at another neighbor's house refinishing a pergola.

Because of the combination of his skills, attitude, and pricing, we gave him a long list of maintenance to do on our townhouse.

You can contact him on WhatsApp at +52 1 624 145 5410 or contact his wife Diana of Om Spa on WhatsApp +52 1 624 237 4231 to get an estimate of your maintenance needs.

CHAMUYO ARGENTINEAN RESTAURANT. Chamuyo is an authentic Argentinean restaurant in the Art District in San Jose del Cabo and near Medano in Cabo San Lucas. Chamuyo on Jose Maria Morelos across from Ruba's Bakery in the Art District offers both indoor and outdoor dining. Entering the restaurant to the left, the whole wall is covered by a long bar with seating and a great range of spirits on display (Clase Azul bottles all along the top shelf). There is an air-conditioned dining room to the right and both indoor seating and an outdoor patio toward the back. Off the patio is a grill and wood-fired oven.

The menu at Chamuyo offers a series of interesting appetizers - baked or fried empanadas with different fillings, grilled cheese, grilled zucchini, sausages - as well as soup and salads. As you would expect, being and Argentinian restaurant there are lots of meat options - steak, including a Tomahawk, beef rib, grilled combinations. The restaurant also has chicken, shrimp, lobster, and even homemade pastas.

There was a group of five of us and so we had the opportunity to sample a lot of the menu. While making our choices, we ordered drinks, and our server placed a platter with fresh focaccia bread and two dips. For appetizers, we ordered a blue cheese and mushroom empanada, the creamy onion soup, and French fries. I ordered the empanada baked and it was amazing as was the sweet creamy onion soup. For the main course, Cindi ordered the beef rib - and it was a single rib almost dinosaur sized. Beth and Jim ordered the special Chamuyo Shrimp in a roasted garlic and white wine reduction sauce served with mashed potatoes. Peggy ordered the homemade pasta with chicken in an Alfredo sauce. You can choose your protein and the sauce. I ordered the pasta plain in an oil and garlic sauce. The garlic was heavenly. Everyone really enjoyed their meals and the service was incredible. Our server has just arrived from Brazil three months before and was knowledgeable, attentive, and funny.

We capped off the evening with a single order of the special Chamuyo dessert - baked apple in rum, cinnamon, and sugar with vanilla ice cream. Delicious.

CASA PORFIRIA IN PLAZA AL CARDON. Casa Porfiria has moved from its original location at Atrium off Mijares Boulevard downtown to Plaza al Cardon - the first plaza north of the Vidanta Golf Course. The company, from Santiago de Querétero on the mainland, is an interior design company that manufacturers much of its own furniture. Their approach to helping their customers is not simply to show them furniture and accessories that are in the showroom but really to work as custom designers. Visiting the home or condo of the potential customer, Casa Porfiria takes measurements and creates 3D models of the whole space. There is then an in-depth interview with the client to learn about the tastes in furniture, design, colors and the functionality that they want in their home. The result is to actually prepare a 3D presentation that places the exact recommended furniture, accessories, artwork in their rooms so that they are able to visualize how everything fits and how it will look. This can even include choices of wallpaper and paint for the home. This full presentation allows the designers and the customers to adjust their plans in real time to make decisions about their home in Los Cabos.

Because Casa Porfiria manufacturers all the furniture on the mainland in Mexico, they can deliver and install within 45 to 60 days. Most of the larger furniture stores in Los Cabos require four to six months to deliver (and installation may or may not be included). They have the ability to easily change the size, fabric and materials of the furniture items that you choose and still meet the agreed deadline for delivery.

The new location has just opened and is offering a huge discount on items in the showroom (40% on furniture and 50% on accessories). This is to make way for all the new items that will be arriving for a grand opening in October.

For more information on Casa Porfiria visit their website at https://casaporfiria.com/ or visit them on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/casaporfiria/ or Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/casaporfiria/?hl=es

LA COCHINERA BAJAVARIA. Located in Plaza Victoria in Las Tunas in Todos Santas along with 5 Tacos and a Beer and Bonjour Madame, La Cochinera Bajavaria is a brewhouse that features 16 Taps of Craft Beers. There is a large outdoor patio with picnic tables and umbrellas as well as a big oblong bar and additional seating inside. On the wall are a series of boards number and naming each of the beers available on tap. Bajavaria has been a popular place for locals to go to meet and have a beer for some time.

Owned by a couple from San Francisco, the tasked Chef Malia Loaiza with creating a menu featuring some German dishes consistent with the name of the restaurant. Malia told me that the wanted to create food with large enough portions for guests to share as they enjoyed their beer. So the menu offers a Giant Pretzel, Fried Mussels, Bratwurst with several options, Kasespetzle (macaroni and cheese), and Schnitzel.

I decided to order both the Kasespetzle and the Schnitzel to get a good sense of the German food on the menu. I had enjoyed both in Vienna and Munich many years ago. I ordered a glass of number 14, Ayinger Bairisch Pilsner from Germany to accompany my meal.

When the food was delivered I was shocked. The plates were huge and looked great. The Kaseppetzle macaroni and cheese was covered with bacon and chives in a large round plate - enough for at least four people. The schnitzel came with green salad with cucumbers, capers, lemons and a tartar-style sauce. The breaded and fried pork was also enough for four people. The flavors were great and I ended up taking 2/3rds of the schnitzel and more than half of the macaroni and cheese home for another two meals.

The food, service and atmosphere are great (and pet friendly). On Thursdays, they celebrate Summer Nights with guest chefs, special menus, drinks and live entertainment. BREN'S MUSIC DON'T BE SHY. We first saw Berenice and Rene, Bren's Music performing at the San Jose del Cabo Food Truck Park. Berenice on vocals and Rene on guitar and keyboards. Later, we regularly saw them at Macca and now they play on Monday night at 7 Seas Restaurant in the Cabo Surf Hotel. Berenice has a great voice and energy and their repertoire ranges from popular hits to a little country and jazz.

Here is their rendition of Don't Be Shy. Enjoy!

OM SPA SAN JOSE DEL CABO. There are lots of places to have a spa experience in Los Cabos. These range from the $40 massage places in the hotel zone in San Jose del Cabo, the dicey massage parlors target to men in Cabo San Lucas, and the extensive spas in many of the luxury hotels in Los Cabos. Other than the latter, most of the massage therapists are neither trained nor certified.

For eight years Om Spa has been offering massage, facial, and beauty services in the homes of residents of communities like Palmilla and Querencia. A total of 10 certified providers work with Om Spa. The business has just got two spaces in the Biogenia Clinic on the corner by the Pemex where in connects with Centenario (the back street in San Jose del Cabo). These new modern spaces allow to offer massages and facials at lower costs than when the team goes to the clients home.

Om Spa has a menu of different types of massages - Deep Tissue Massage, Swedish Relaxation Massage, Sports Massage, and their Signature Massage, which uses herbal pindas and heated obsidian stones on strategic points on the body. These massages are offered in 60- or 90-minute versions. There are also shorter 30-minute massages - neck, shoulder and back massage and a foot reflexology massage - as well as a zen balance and hot stones massage.

The experience starts by completing a form with your basic information, medical conditions and the areas on which you would like the therapist to focus. Diana, the owner and my therapist started by cleaning my feet and then worked each area of my body - head, shoulders, legs, chest - during the 60-minute massage. At times hot towels and aroma therapy were part of the process. The massage was thorough, relaxing, and at times, intense working on stiff muscles. When the massage was finish, she provided hibiscus tea and a fig newton to enjoy while I was getting dressed.

Waiting for me, I asked Diana about the facial treatments provided at the Spa location as well as the other servers offered if the certified therapists visit the client's home. The facials begin with deep cleansing of the skin as well as hydration to fight aging. Two different facials are offered - OM Signature Facial, which uses sea moss and Repair and Deep Cleaning Facial. Both use hard facial masks as part of the treatment to repair the skin and stimulate collagen production. The at-home treatments also include manicures, pedicures, lash treatments, acrylic nails and waxing. The massages in the spa begin at $60 and in the home at $70 for the 30-minute treatments and $75 and $120 for the 60-minute treatment.

Having had massages all over the world while traveling for UNICEF, the Asian Development Bank, and electronics companies, I was very impressed with both the facilities at the spa and the quality of the treatment. For just a little bit more than the street and beach massages, and a lot less than the luxury hotel spas, you get a high quality experience by certified massage therapists.

ARTS AND SUSHI. Located on the marina in Cabo San Lucas, Art and Sushi is on the corner facing the marina across from the mall. The restaurant has both indoor and outdoor seating. I had been looking for sushi restaurants in Cabo San Lucas to consider for my column in the Gr**go Gazette, Restaurants That Don't Break the Bank. The Art in the restaurant's name comes from a number of sculptures displayed in the restaurant.

While Beth is not a fan of sushi, the menu has several options other than raw fish including Yakatori, tempura dishes, salads, teppanyaki and main courses of fish, shrimp, lobster, chicken, and beef. I was there to try the sushi and so I ordered the Tuna on a Crispy Tostadita and a Tekkamaki roll (tuna). Beth ordered the Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura. The Tempura dish was served with a bowl of miso soup to start.

The Tempura dish looked very good although Beth noted that the shrimp had not been well cleaned and deveined. The miso soup was too salty for her taste. The Tuna appetizer was good with lots of chopped tuna on this crispy wafers with a soy sauce, avocado, and chives. The Tekkamaki roll featured tuna that was a little chewy suggesting that it wasn't fresh that day.

We decided to try the Tempura Ice Cream for dessert, which was very tasty.

Sitting outside we could watch the musicians walking by, selling their songs. The main waiter worked all of the tourists walking along the malecon to come in and enjoy their food. Overall, we felt that there are much better choice on the marina nearby - both Vibrant and Mr. Alexander - have great food and service. As far as sushi goes, Arts and Sushi would be low on my list of places to go for fresh sushi. The prices were also a little high.

LA PALAPA DEL SABOR. After nine years on the main street of Todos Santos (Benito Juarez) fighting the music from the street, Cristina Madariaga, the owner of La Palapa del Sabor found a perfect new location for her restaurant. Located on Ignacio Zaragoza two blocks from the main street, La Palapa del Sabor now has a huge backyard of the property that provides a space for outdoor seating, a round palapa bar, an outdoor kitchen with wood-fired oven, a stage for entertainment, and a grass lawn for pets and families. We were completely surprised as we walked through the archway gate and back to the restaurant.

Painted in vibrant Mexican colors, the atmosphere is great. The sign at the front of the property announces pet friendly and so we brought Charlie, our Lhasa Apso with us for lunch. He immediate met and said hello to another dog. The server greeted us and told us to choose any table that we would like. He brought us menus and one specially for Charlie. The owner, Cristina came over to introduce herself and tell us about the menu. It is an extensive offering of Mexican food. Two of their specialties she said were the chicken mole, which used her mother's mole recipe, and the Fish Tacos pastor, with their special sauce. We ordered our drinks and looked over the menu.

There were several appetizers, soups and salads, meats, chicken, fish, and shrimp all prepared in Mexican tradition. The other side of the menu offered a full range of special tacos, chilaquiles, some sandwiches and a hamburger. We decided to order some guacamole to start. Beth chose chicken fajitas for her main lunch course with flour tortillas, and I selected their special fish tacos al pastor.

Our appetizer came - a large platter with guacamole, pico de gallo, and tortilla chips. The guacamole was great with tomatoes, onions and lemon mixed in. The pico de gallo also had a unique flavor. A separate small bowl of spicy salsa was also served with the guacamole. We enjoyed it very much as we waited for our entrees. We also ordered a special lunch for Charlie. During the break, Beth took Charlie for a walk around the property to explore the sights and smells.

The three fish tacos al pastor were served on blue corn tortillas. The tacos had long strips of fish prepared in a special sauce with lots of pineapple to add even more flavor. The chicken fajitas came on a large plate with lots of chicken, peppers, and onions. There was also a small bowl of guacamole and another salsa to add in building the fajitas with the flour tortillas. Both of the dishes were excellent and very reasonably priced.

Cristina came over to ask how we liked our food, which gave us the chance to ask more about the restaurant. The focus on pets was obvious. She explained that they held monthly clinics to spay and neuter cats and dogs and no cost as well as an afternoon dog park on Saturdays from 4:00 to 6:00 pm. There was an adoption sign up at the back in an area that had stacks of dog crates. She explained that the group of women that meeting at a nearby table were planning the events to raise funds to support their efforts to help the pets and sheltered animals in Todos Santos. On October 24th, with the start of the new season, they will have a mariachi night. They also hold exhibitions of Mexican dancing. The restaurant also sells special dog treats and other items to support their efforts.

Cristina, a retired AeroMexico pilot (which her son is now too) is very organized and works to implement her vision of how to give back to the community.

We were very impressed with the location, the food, the service, and the owner's commitment to the animals of Todos Santos. It is worth a trip for the food and the cause.

WOOLWORTH DEPARTMENT STORE. Like many other people from the United States and Canada, I grew up with Woolworth Department Store. While they have closed their stores up north in 1997, there are still stores in Mexico. The newest just opened on the road to Todos Santos on the north side of Cabo San Lucas near the Soriana Hiper shopping mall. Parking is below the store. There are two floors. The first floor has women's and girl's clothing, women's lingerie, a beauty area, sporting goods, the candy shop, and gifts as well as the main check-out area.
The second-floor features men's and boy's clothing, baby and children's items, a toy and games section, home goods, and electronics, school and stationary items, and equipment.

From a walk through of the store, it is clear that Woolworth has stayed true to its mission to offer affordably priced goods to the general population. The selection, quality and pricing are consistent with this philosophy. The photos provide a tour of both the ground and first floor of Woolworth. For more information visit their overall website at https://www.delsol.com.mx/ and choose Los Cabos.

CANTINA LA TRESEFES IN LA PLAYITA. Located on the second floor of Newport Plaza in La Playita next to the OXXO, Cantina La Tresefes opened on February 11th for Super Bowl. The Cantina has both indoor dining and seating on the deck outdoors at the front of the second floor of Newport Plaza. There are big screen televisions both inside and outside, which supported its packed Super Bowl opening. Initially the restaurant opened only for breakfast and lunch but, a few months ago, they added breakfast between 8:00 am and 12:00 noon.

I was greeted at the door by the hostess and asked if I had any allergies and then was led to my choice of tables inside. On the right, there is a long bar with seating and the dining room has an additional seven tables. Octavio, my server introduced himself and asked me what I would like to drink. I was brought a Diet Coke and a glass of water along with a basket of tortilla chips and salsa. I studied the menu. The left flap, Panga de Tresefes featured a wide choice of fresh seafood items - oysters, ceviche, octopus, sashimi, and more. The main page included a section title Maiz that featured several tacos and tortilla wrapped items and well as a section on Main Courses - steak, ribs, chicken, fish, pork, shrimp and lobster dishes and more. The right flap offered Botanicas and Soups and Salads.

While I was making my decision, Octavio served me their complimentary appetizer of the day - two grilled tortillas with a green salsa, onions, cheese, and a dab of sour cream. They were very good. For my lunch, I decided to try the Golden Taco, which had two crunchy corn tortillas with the choice of shredded chicken, smoked marlin, or beef, black beans, pico de gallo, fresh cheese, and a large slice of avocado. The tacos also came with a small bowl of consommé. They were fully stuffed and delicious.

Octavio offered my dessert, but I was too full to even consider it. The overall experience was very good - great service, good food both in portion size, flavor, and presentation, and a very pleasant atmosphere.

OYE BASTARDO IN SAN JOSE DEL CABO. Oye Bastardo (The Grilling Bastards) is a small taco restaurant that opened in May 2024 just up the hill from El Toro Guero in San Jose del Cabo. It has a rounded front right on the corner. Entering through the gate to an outdoor dining area with a gravel floor, there are about ten tables with a built-in banquette along the left wall. Much of the outdoor dining area is covered by a fabric pergola. At the front of the restaurant is a fully equipped bar with spirits, beer, artisanal beer, and soda available. There is also a barrel smoker. At the back of the restaurant is a fully equipped kitchen.

Alberto, the chef, owner has had a BBQ restaurant in MonteReal - BarbaNegra Smoke & BBQ - that does a full smoked BBQ on weekends that has been open for seven years. He has brought his experience and success there to San Jose del Cabo. The menu is limited and focuses primarily on tacos. But this is not an ordinary taco restaurant. The tacos are truly gourmet, with high quality smoked meat and fresh ingredients. The menu also includes four items to share - poison shrimp, asian aguachile, grilled cheese, and Diablo potatoes.

Between us, my wife and I ordered four different tacos - barbacoa, cauliflower, al pastor and portobello mushroom. Beth said the cauliflower taco was the best that she ever had, as the fresh cauliflower was cooked in butter. The al pastor was nothing like all the other restaurants in Los Cabos. It is made with pork jowl that is smoked and then cut in strips, served with a special sauce and big pieces of pineapple. The beef barbacoa had been smoked for a long time and was served with onions. There were also a few different salsas to add even more flavor. The portobello mushroom taco had large slices of portobello mushroom in a special sauce. Again, just amazing. They all went very well with my mango mezcalita. But the final win was the special dessert - ice cream with maple syrup, bacon, and nuts. Delicious.

I will say again, Oye Bastardo is not like any other taco restaurant. It is a place you MUST visit if you are in San Jose del Cabo. The restaurant is simple but the food, and service are incredible.

PET CARE AT LA PALAPA DEL SABOR IN TODOS SANTOS. La Palapa del Sabor on Ignacio Zaragoza in Todos Santos is much more than a pet friendly restaurant. It is a place where a group of people come together to take care of the pets of Todos Santos. There program includes a whole series of activities. Once a month on Sunday, Palapa del Sabor hosts a spay and neutering clinic where residents and shelters can bring their dogs and cats and have them fixed at no cost. The participating vets give La Palapa del Sabor a deep discount on the cost and the restaurant along with a group of women plan fundraising events to cover the cost on an ongoing basis. There most recent clinic in July 2024 treated 82 dogs and cats. On Saturday afternoons between 4:00 and 6:00pm, the restaurant is turned into a dog park. People bring their dogs, and they are allowed to run free throughout the whole open area of La Palapa del Sabor. At times, the owners will bring blankets and set up picnics while they play.

From time to time, all of shelters in Todos Santos, which are overcrowded are invited to bring their dogs for an adoption event. All the pets have their shots and have been spayed or neutered. Volunteers work with the children who are there to teach them that the dogs are part of the family and how they should be treated when the go home with them.

On the Day of the Dead, which celebrates the lives of people who have passed away, La Palapa del Sabor does the same thing for pets that have passed over the rainbow bridge. People set up shrines to celebrate their pets.

La Palapa del Sabor has a pet menu to feed your dog when you go for lunch or dinner. But they also have healthy treats that are available for purchase - another way that funds are raised to support their clinics.

So, if you visit Todos Santos and love your pets, this is a great place to go with very good food, excellent service and a wonderful owner - Cristina Madariaga.

The History Leading to Enjoy Los Cabos Life

Having been a part-time resident of Los Cabos since 1992, we have seen tremendous changes to the region. In the early days, roads were washed out every year; there were few places to shop and even the restaurants were limited. Now, Los Cabos is truly an international resort destination. For those of us who live here many of the difficulties of day-to-day living are gone. Costco, Home Depot, Walmart and great grocery stores have arrived. Some don’t like the development but tourism has brought many benefits to Los Cabos.

We decided to launch Enjoy Los Cabos Life because there really are few outlets that provide much more than listings of where to go and what to do. Much of the information has also focused primarily on Cabo San Lucas rather than all five regions of Los Cabos - The East Cape, San Jose del Cabo, the Corridor between San Jose and Cabo San Lucas, Cabo San Lucas and the Pacific side including Todos Santos. Over time, we hope to be able to provide good information, photos, videos and interviews that will showcase the places, people and lifestyles available in Los Cabos. We hope to launch a full website (enjoyloscaboslifestyle.com) late in 2019. If you have comments and suggestions, please email us at [email protected]
