THE CHANGING FACE OF ZACATITOS. The East Cape of Los Cabos has changed a great deal over the past five years. Hotel Vidanta is on the verge of opening. Beachfront properties in Shipwrecks and La Fortuna have been built by the dozens. Buzzard’s Bar and Grill in La Laguna has closed and is being replaced by condominiums on the land beside and behind the former restaurant. But little has changed as much as Zacatitos. When the development was original launched by Laura McGregor over 30 years ago, the lots, even beachfront were relatively inexpensive, and as it was off-the-grid (solar or generators for electricity, water and propane delivered) many of the buyers chose Zacatitos for privacy. Lots of the initial structures were palapas and trailers, or very small homes. Today it is not unusual to see very large properties being constructed, some at costs of up to $10 million US.
Leaving the East Cape paved highway and taking the dirt road about a mile and a quarter down leaves you at the security guards at the entrance to the neighborhood. Right, there is Zac’s Bar and Grill owned by Angel and Paul Rini. The restaurant has been expanded twice in the past five years and offers and extensive menu for lunch and dinner with specials like Pizza Mondays and Taco Tuesdays. This is the commercial crossroads of Zacatitos. Currently the lots across the street and fenced offed and Plaza Zacatitos is under construction. This purportedly with have stores, offices and a boutique hotel when it is completed. Beside it is a real estate office. Beside Zac’s to the west are two commercial spaces with equipment for grading the roads and supporting planting large palm trees and more.
Driving west from Zac’s Bar and Grill, is a brand-new container convenience store, Central Station Zacatitos, with some food and beverage items, mail, and supplies for the residents of the neighborhood. A little farther down this main road is a palapa where on Wednesday nights, Amber Thorpe of East Cape Critters shows first run movies to support caring for the animals (donkeys, cats, dogs) on the East Cape. Beside it is a small coffee shop, Coco Loco. On Wednesdays, there is also an Organic Market in Zacatitos.
There are two main gates in Zacatitos – one straight ahead from Zac’s for Santa Cruz de los Zacatitos and the other just below Punta Gorda and the other end of the development for Los Zacatitos. Streets are marked off with concrete pillars that provide the manzana of the area.
Beyond the beginnings of a commercial area, the real changes are in the ongoing construction in Zacatitos. Our house on beach between the two arroyos is being expanded and rebuilt by the new owners (it had been completely renovated in 2017 and had seven bedrooms and a one-bedroom casita. The lots beside our house, a small arroyo was never supposed to be built on and it now holds a large house open on the bottom with a path for water to rush during storms. The small round house at the other end the cul-de-sac has been torn down, and a multistory home is being built. Driving the neighborhood, much of the new construction is contemporary in style and much larger than the average home built in the early days of Zacatitos.
The beauty of Zacatitos is the Sea of Cortez. During the seasons, whales are abundant in the water in front of the beaches. Several areas have great swimmable beaches (except during summer) and there is lots of marine life for snorkeling near the rocks and spear fishing. The photos and descriptions provide a sample of the lifestyle available in this East Cape community.

COME A CASA. Italian restaurants are probably second to Mexican restaurants in number in Los Cabos. Ranging from pizza places to fine dining restaurants, San Jose del Cabo has over a dozen from which to choose. One of our favorites that we discovered this year is the family-run restaurant Come a Casa. Located on Calle Zaragoza (the down street), a block uphill from Jazmin's, the restaurant has been open for almost two years in this location. Entering the front door, the open kitchen is on the left with seating at a bar. There are two dining spaces - one in front and one in the back half of the restaurant. The back of the restaurant features the bar and a large wood-fired pizza oven. The menu offers a full range of Italian pastas, pizza and main courses.

The father, Mauricio is the Executive Chef and his son is the chef and his daughter manages the reservations and seating of the guests. The restaurant is always full and so reservations are required (and only by phone). Beth and I try to get our fix about once a month. The flavors are amazing and it is one of the only places where there is no there is no acidic aftertaste to the tomato sauce.

Beth ordered the Caesar Salad to start, with the parmesan cheese on the side and I asked for the small loaf of pizza bread. As usual, I stole some of the Caesar Salad. The dressing is perfect and it comes with a piece of crispy baked cheese. The pizza bread is an amazing alternative to rolls with great seasonings from the pizza oven. For a main course, Beth chose the pasta with oil and garlic and a few cherry tomatoes on top. I order the Pasta Amatriciana, which is served with some burrata cheese on top. Both are excellent. The pasta is always cooked perfectly.

For dessert we selected the Lemon Tart to share. It lives up to its name and is truly tart. Amazing.

The food is great and the service from Laura was excellent in a very pleasant contemporary atmosphere.

Reservations for dinner need to be made by phone as there is no online process at 624 177 1536. For more information about Come a Casa, Google Come a Casa San Jose del Cabo as there is another in Cabo San Lucas. Their Google page has 172 reviews and directions to the restaurant.

GUILLERMO PROAL VOLARE AT CASA MARTIN SAN JOSE DEL CABO. The entertainment at Casa Martin San Jose del Cabo matched the style of the restaurant perfectly. Guillermo Proal, who had just recently arrived from Mexico City has a great repertoire of standards from singers like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and others. Guillermo performs with a wireless microphone while walking through the restaurant. The choice of songs and the level of the music was perfect for the location. Guillermo also is multilingual and so, offers the guests songs in English, Spanish, and some Italian.

Here is Guillermo's rendition of the Italian classic by Dean Martin, Volare. Enjoy!

DINNER AT CASA MARTIN IN SAN JOSE DEL CABO. We were so happy to see that Casa Martin had decided to open a restaurant in San Jose del Cabo. Casa Martin San Jose del Cabo is located next to the Mission in the small plaza across from La Dolce’s parking lot in the Art District. As you enter, you will encounter all the amazing sculptures made of scrap metal by Juan Sotomayor.
We love the food and service at the Cabo San Lucas unique location. We were equally pleased with the experience at the new location in San Jose del Cabo. A group of seven of went for dinner. Even before ordering, we were brought the first pizza prepared in their special oven. It was delicious. The table was also served rolls and butter. We asked for two orders of tuna tartar for the table to share. The tuna was very fresh and the flavors excellent. Kevin and Tracey shared a Country Salad with grilled romaine lettuce and vegetables, and Beth had the Butternut Squash soup, which was poured at the table. The traditional amuse of a five-cheese ravioli was served to everyone before our main courses. The choice was main courses was diverse - a lamb shank with the lamb falling off the bone, two orders of chicken piccata served with a green pasta, the catch-of-the day Totoaba, a white fish served with organic vegetables and sunflower hummus, the lobster risotto, the linguine habanero, and the braised short rib with pappardelle pasta. The conclusion was thumbs up from around the table. We all did a little sharing as well, to taste the other's choices. The quality and presentation of the food met the highest standard and the standard set by Chef Roger Martin.

During the meal, we were entertained by Guillermo on vocals, who performed a range of standards from singers like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and others. He added in a few Christmas carols to celebrate the season. The chef, Karla Tejeda came out to see how we liked our dinner, and we all clapped.
To end the meal, we shared an order of warm churros that were served with caramel, chocolate and strawberry sauces. Delicious. Overall, it was an excellent experience. We will be back soon.

DINNER AT SPINALIS STEAKHOUSE IN PLAZA NOVVA. We met our friends Christa and Keith Maurer at Spinalis Steakhouse in Plaza Novva behind Costco for dinner. We have been there a few times before when it was Steakhouse da Pietro. We arrived early and so I asked our amazing server Martin the reason and meaning of the name. He explained that Pietro was no longer involved in the steakhouse and was focusing on Trattoria da Pietro, also in Plaza Novva. Spinalis come from the Latin Spinalis Dorsi, which is the cap on the end of the rib eye and has a very special fat that makes it the best cut of steak available.

Spinalis Steakhouse is one of those restaurants in Los Cabos that has very large portions and so it is best to plan your meal with friends to share. The restaurant is designed like a New York Steakhouse, including a large photograph of the Rat Pack on one wall. The back of the restaurant from end-to-end is a long bar with an excellent selection of beer and spirits. There is a table tent that describes their special cocktails. The restaurant has created its own wine app on a tablet that allows you to choose the varietal and region from which you would like to select your favorite wine to complement your meal.

The menu has baked onion soup, two salads, and several different appetizers to share. For main courses, there are several cuts of beef, lamb chops, shrimp, fried chicken, and a few burgers. In addition, there is an Italian corner with several different pastas and chicken parmigiana. Like all great steakhouses, there a several sides to share - vegetables, loaded baked potatoes, fries, and onion rings.

We had decided that we would share our appetizers and main courses and so we collaborated on a order with a range of flavors. Beth wanted the French Onion Soup, we also ordered Tuna Tartar and an Old Fashioned Wedge Salad to start, which was cut in half and served to Keith and me. The flavors were amazing, and the Wedge was piled high with blue cheese and bacon and a blue cheese dressing. As Christa is allergic to avocado, the Tuna Tartar separated the avocado and tuna, and it was served with crispy chips. The table was offered focaccia bread and smoke-infused butter as well.

When it came to ordering steak, Martin came over with a chart that showed were each cut came from on the cow and on the other side the color of each temperature as prepared at the restaurant. Beth was going to choose the Filet, but Keith suggested that we try the Spinalis and have it served sliced to share. He said the special fat in the cap makes it the juiciest steak cut possible. He was right. I ordered the chicken parmigiana; Christa the fried chicken; and Keith chose the Gnocchi with mushrooms (for us to have as a shared side). Beth also selected the loaded baked potato without the cheese that it usually has.

The meal was amazing with great presentations of the food. The fried chicken was three large pieces that were thick and juicy, with a salad and honey mustard sauce on the side. The Spinalis steak was served with grilled peppers and onions and was cooked just right. There were two sauces to enhance the flavor if you wanted. The chicken parmigiana was breaded, covered with cheese, and was moist (rather than so often overcooked) and served with spaghetti in a tomato sauce with a little spice. The gnocchi were excellent with the creamy mushroom sauce. Even shared, there was still lots left over to take home for lunch the next day.

Even though we had devoured so much. Christa ordered the Apple cake and the Chocolate Mousse cake for us to share for dessert. Both were served with a scoop of ice cream and fresh fruit. Excellent!

If you want a restaurant with great food, excellent service, and still reasonably priced, Spinalis Steakhouse should be at the top of your list.

NEW YEAR'S EVE CELEBRATIONS IN LOS CABOS. There is no shortage of celebrating the entry of the new year in Los Cabos. Cabo San Lucas has long been known as the party town. So many of the clubs, like El Squid Roe, Mandala, Vistaroof at Tesoro and restaurants - Sancho's, Sunset Mona Lisa, Esperanza, El Farallon have dinners and music. In San Jose del Cabo, H Garden has a special dinner. Flora Farms has a dinner and entertainment as does District MX. In Todos Santos, Sharon Katz will be performing at Poke Loko and karaoke is offered at Todos Santos Brewing. One thing that is common to most of the parties is that they either have fireworks or have views of the fireworks that are set off at almost every hotel or from the marinas in Cabo San Lucas and Puerto Los Cabos. So if you have made up your mind what to do tomorrow, here are some of the events going on in the region for New Year's Eve. Happy New Year 2025.

CHRISTMAS DINNER FROM TABA BBQ. We wanted to stay home and have Christmas dinner with friends this year. So, I searched through restaurants that offered pick up of a complete Christmas dinner. Unfortunately, most offered dinners for 12 people or more with prices that ranged from $7000 mx to almost $10,000 mx. As there were only going to be four of us that was crazy. It turns out that Taba BBQ was offering a "Small Gatherings" package to serve five to seven people for $5200 mx (or about $260 US). The package included a half of turkey that have been prepared in their smoker, mashed potatoes, stuffing, potato salad, macaroni and cheese, coleslaw, rolls, and a cranberry bourbon BBQ sauce.

I drove down to Cabo San Lucas to pick up my order at 3:30 pm on Christmas Eve (they were closing at 4:00 pm). There were several couples waiting to pick up their orders, and the restaurant was in full production mode - putting all the fixings into large plastic crates and helping people to their cars. I asked for instructions on reheating the dinner. All the items came in foil trays with foil covering, prepared to go into a 200-degree F oven.

Christmas Day came and Beth made some tuna salsa for us to enjoy as an appetizer outside in the patio. We had several different varietals of wine to pair with the dinner - Jamaica artisanal wine from Las Tinajas Vineyard in Todos Santos, a Chardonnay, a Rose, and a sparkling wine to start. The dinner went into the oven at about 4:00 pm for 45 minutes, and when ready Kevin carved the turning, Beth and Tracey put all the extras into bowls and on the table, and I opened the wine.

It was clear from the beginning that there was enough food for eight or more people, and that we were going to have lots of leftovers. The food was excellent, the flavors delicious, and the company even better. We talked, drank, ate, and listened to the Bridge on SiriusXM satellite radio, with a burning fire on the TV. The meal was finished off with apple crisp and ice cream that Tracey brought to the dinner.

I would strongly recommend Taba BBQ for these type of takeout dinners. It was a great value for the quality and amount of food provided and the mix was excellent - with different sides for different tastes.

LOST DOGS OF ZACATITOS MEXICO WAY. The Lost Dogs of Zacatitos was formed in 2008 by a number of people living in Zacatitos on the East Cape. With Josh Child on lead guitar and vocals, Herb Mullen on bass guitar and vocals, and Chris on drums, the band has a great repertoire of both rock and roll hits and original songs, often about life on the Baja. Some of the audience favorites include Grateful Dead hits. The Lost Dogs of Zacatitos recently played at Shade Beach Bar and Grill in La Fortuna to an enthusiastic audience.
Here is their original song, Mexico Way. Enjoy!

LOS TACOS LOCOS. A new restaurant has opened at the back of Plaza Artesanos on Blvd Antonio Mijares in San Jose del Cabo. This plaza has many small shops offering everything from art and clothing to Mexican artisanal products to massages and a pharmacy. The large courtyard in the middle at the back with a fountain has been converted into Los Tacos Locos. A bar has been added at the back of the courtyard, a fabric roof covers the space, and the kitchen is up the stairs on the second floor. The restaurant touts itself as a place for Tacos and Beer.

The menu offers Tacos, Quesadillas, Nachos, Papas Locas, Guacamole, and a full bar and non-alcoholic beverages. This would be the perfect place for men to escape their wives shopping expeditions visiting every one of the shops by having a beer in a pleasant space.

We stopped for a quick dinner. After ordering our drinks - limonada minerale and Diet Coke, we asked for guacamole to start. While we were waiting, our server gave us each a small cup of bean soup as a complimentary starter. It was tasting with small pieces of chicharron on top. The guacamole was mixed with tomatoes and onions and served in a bowl with tortilla chips. Beth ordered on chicken and one arrachera taco on flour tortillas. The tacos were served with small ramekins of Pico de Gallo, guacamole, and salsa. Beth said the tacos were good but lacking compared to places like Lateral. I ordered the Papas Locas, which turned out to be spicy French fry wedges with pastor and two dips. For the price ($320 mx), if found them disappointing.

The service was good, the atmosphere pleasant, and I think a great place to stop for a beer, but I wouldn't choose this for tacos in San Jose del Cabo.

HAPPY BOXING DAY 2024. To all our friends and family in Canada and the United Kingdom, happy Boxing Day. The BBC says "The name comes from a time when the rich used to box up gifts to give to the poor. Boxing Day was traditionally a day off for servants - a day when they received a special Christmas box from their masters. The servants would also go home on Boxing Day to give Christmas boxes to their families." It is also a day of big sales at retail stores. All the best.

BARBERIA ALPHA. Gentlemen, want to look good for the holidays and be pampered in the process? Think about getting a haircut and a shave at Barberia Alpha at one of their two locations - either in the small plaza next to the Banamex on Blvd Mijares or Plaza Garuffi behind La Comer in the Hotel Zone. I recently went for my monthly haircut. It starts with having your hair shampooed. Enrique, the brother of Ernesto the owner, then asked if I would like my haircut with scissors or trimmers, and how I would like it cut. I said that the trimmer was fine, and he began to trim the sides and back of my hair with several different depths of trimmers. He used a comb and scissors on the top of my head. He did not stop at my head but also trimmed my beard, my eyebrows, and the hair in my ears and nose. A completely thorough job.

Enrique than applied shaving cream around my ears and did a quick shave. More shaving cream and a hot towel was wrapped around my face. While the hot towel opened my pores, he used a hand massager massage my face. After removing the towel, he gave me a complete shave on my face and neck and then on the back of my neck. I can never get my skin that smooth with my razors. Once again, a hot towel was used to wipe off the excess shaving cream. I was given a second shampooing of my hair. Finally, Enrique applied aftershave lotion, and I was ready to go.

It is a great experience and worth trying. Barberia Alpha runs free hair cutting and head care clinics in the outer areas of Los Cabos for young kids with sponsors who provide personal care products for the kids. The serve them lunch and give them toys too.

CASA MARTIN OPENS IN SAN JOSE DEL CABO. On Wednesday, December 18th, 2024, a ceremony and opening celebration was held at the new location of Casa Martin in San Jose del Cabo. Located at the back of the plaza featuring the metal sculptures of Juan Sotomayor on Miguel Hidalgo beside the mission and across from La Dolce, Casa Martin San Jose del Cabo opened for business on December 19th at 5:00 pm.

The opening included a blessing of the location by a local priest and a ribbon cutting ceremony by representatives of local and state government, the restaurant association and other public officials. Servers from the restaurants offered invited guests mezcalitas or water while they waited for the official opening with the ribbon cutting. Guests streamed in and were greeted by Chef Roger Martin as he was congratulated on the new opening.

The restaurant has a similar feel to Casa Martin in Cabo San Lucas with a very large fireplace and chimney in the center of the restaurant with seating all around it, sunken a few steps from the main dining room. A special bar menu will be offered starting at 3:00 pm for those who wish to sit in front of the fire, have a cocktail and some snacks.

Once everyone had entered the restaurant, servers moved through the restaurant offering guests, a charcuterie plate with cheese, meats, nuts and fruit. This was followed by beef and chicken skewers, a carnitas tart, and some other delights. Baja Wines was on hand serving wine to the guests around the restaurant. Everyone was entertained by the vocal stylings of Guillermo with great standards like Volare.

Manuel Pineda, the manager of Casa Martin moved through the guests answering questions and making sure everyone was having a good time. Several other chefs were on hand to congratulate Chef Roger including Chef Edgar Roman of Don Sanchez and Volker Romeike, who originally brought Chef Roger to Los Cabos as his sous chef in Cabo Del Sol.

The layout and seating of the restaurant was elegant and very comfortable and all of the servers are clearly well trained and experienced. We look forward to dining at Casa Martin San Jose del Cabo next week.

CHRIS PAULSON HEART OF GOLD. We were lucky enough to have Chris Paulson join us at the pool in Pueblo Campestre Phase 2 to perform after our homeowner's meeting. Chris has been a wandering minstrel for over 35 years playing in plazas and parks around the world. He spends his summers at his home in France and visiting his son and grandchild in Germany and his winters at his home in Todos Santos. Chris performs Monday nights at La Morena and often joins other great musicians at Bezos de Mezcal in Pescadero, Poke Loko and Landi's in Las Tunas. Chris also offers sunset concerts on the roof of his home, Casa Barbara with special guests. His repertoire of folk, rock, blues, and R & B always guarantees a great evening of entertainment.

Here is his version of Neil Young’s song, Heart of Gold. Enjoy!

DON SANCHEZ TABLESIDE CAESAR SALAD. There is absolutely nothing as good as a traditional Caesar Salad prepared tableside. Making the Caesar dressing from scratch with egg yolks, anchovy, garlic, olive oil, lime, and carefully mixing them all together is a sight to behold. After completing the dressing each of the leaves of Romaine lettuce was rub through the dressing. The server at Don Sanchez on Blvd Mijares in San Jose del Cabo did an absolutely amazing job. We ordered two Caesar salads that were plated and shared between the four of us, they were excellent.

The History Leading to Enjoy Los Cabos Life

Having been a part-time resident of Los Cabos since 1992, we have seen tremendous changes to the region. In the early days, roads were washed out every year; there were few places to shop and even the restaurants were limited. Now, Los Cabos is truly an international resort destination. For those of us who live here many of the difficulties of day-to-day living are gone. Costco, Home Depot, Walmart and great grocery stores have arrived. Some don’t like the development but tourism has brought many benefits to Los Cabos.

We decided to launch Enjoy Los Cabos Life because there really are few outlets that provide much more than listings of where to go and what to do. Much of the information has also focused primarily on Cabo San Lucas rather than all five regions of Los Cabos - The East Cape, San Jose del Cabo, the Corridor between San Jose and Cabo San Lucas, Cabo San Lucas and the Pacific side including Todos Santos. Over time, we hope to be able to provide good information, photos, videos and interviews that will showcase the places, people and lifestyles available in Los Cabos. We hope to launch a full website (enjoyloscaboslifestyle.com) late in 2019. If you have comments and suggestions, please email us at [email protected]
