APORA AESTHETICS CLINIC SAN JOSE DEL CABO. Located in Plaza Santa Fe on the northbound transpeninsular highway about a block from Ignacio Zaragoza (the up street) is a new clinic that focuses on improving aesthetics through both dentistry and aesthetic skin and body treatments. Operated by a husband-and wife team, Dr. Jose Manuel Escalante Mendivil (restorative dentist) and Dra. Grisela Chavez Lizardi (aesthetic medicine), Apora Clinic is dedicated to work with its clients to achieve the best results for them. Having help to launch a series of MedSpas in the Boston area, I was very interested to learn more about both their approach and the services that they offer to their clients.

The clinic has a waiting room and two operatories, one for each doctor. First, I visit the treatment room of Dra. Grisela. Looking at the products in the shelves, I could see that she carried the most effective and popular treatments for most of skin and related conditions. Having reviewed her website in advance, I saw that Apora offers hormone replacement therapy, IV treatments, anti-aging treatments, and a full range of non-invasive skin, eye, nose, lips, chin, and fat treatments, including Botox, fillers and laser and plasma pen treatments. Dra. Grisela stressed that whatever a patient believes they need to have done she starts with a full diagnosis and provides a treatment plan based on that diagnosis rather than accepting that someone just wants Botox or fillers. As I sat on her treatment bench, I asked her to give me some initial insights into treatments which would benefit me. She noted my skin damage, but pointed out that since I was on a diet and my facial structure was likely to change that I should wait until I was at a stable weight before addressing the issues with my face. She also noted that as we age treatments to re-generate collagen as less effective and may require more treatments. I had had my eyes done with a plasma pen in the past (which she does) but she indicated at this point surgery would be required to improve my upper eyes. I also have a turkey neck. She said that this was relatively easy to treat with laser removal of the fat and the use of enzymes to tighten the skin. I was impressed with both her knowledge and thoroughness with which she approached the diagnosis of my treatments.

My next stop was to visit Dr Jose Manuel's treatment room. He too stressed that he likes to carefully diagnose and explain to his patients the condition of their teeth and mouth and what they need to do to improve it. He starts in a unique way by taking three photos - upper, lower, and frontal - and displaying them on a monitor. This gives you a much better understanding as a starting point that x-rays alone, which are harder for the average person to see. In my case, he pointed out the build-up of tartar on my lower teeth (a problem I have had) and suggested a cleaning. He did the cleaning and I could immediately feel the difference.

Dr Jose then went into a description of the type of restorative work that he does. He noted that he is analog in orientation and builds molds of everything, especially when he is doing a restorative project. He works with a lab in Mexicali, when crowns (porcelain, zirconia) or implants need to be created from his casts. He walked with through a year-long project to completely rebuild a women's mouth, when she was at the point where she could no long eat, having had temporaries on for three years. The process was amazing and the results incredible (see photos). Many of the temporaries were made by Dr Jose in his office.

Apora Aesthetics is a very interesting addition to the dentistry and MedSpa businesses in San Jose del Cabo.

CASA DON RODRIGO. Located on Blvd Antonio Mijares one half block from the Plaza, Casa Don Rodrigo is in a house built in 1920 by the first mayor Don Rodrigo Aragon. Entering the passage way to the restaurant, there is a bar on the left followed by an air-conditioned dining room of Cantina 29. The end of the passage way opens to a casual dining room with two private dining rooms (one a wine cellar) on the right.

We chose a table for four and the waiter brought us the simple summer menu. The menu includes a number of appetizer items to share, soup and salad, main courses of chicken, catch-of-the day, surf and turf brochettes, risotto, chile relleno, and a table side Fettuccine Don Rodrigo. While we were reviewing the menu, we watched one of the servers preparing the table side Fettucine and it smelled amazing. The ladies selected the Grilled Caesar Salad as their starter that was served with a regional cheese crust. I decided to try the zucchini carpaccio with arugula, pumpkin seeds, and a citrus vinaigrette. It was a huge platter and everyone had a taste. What a great starter!

For main courses, Gene selected the Chile Relleno; Karen, Beth and I all ordered the catch of the day. The catch of the day was Sea Bass in garlic sauce and was served with rice and grilled vegetables. The Chile Relleno was a cheese stuffed poblano pepper with cheese and a red sauce on top. All of the food was excellent as was the service.

Like other restaurants in San Jose del Cabo business was slow due to the construction at the roundabout, which is limiting the willingness of people to fight the traffic. We will definitely go back.

HOTEL SAN CRISTOBAL. Located on the beach at Punta Lobos in Pescadero, Hotel San Cristobal is a boutique hotel with 32 rooms. Entering through a large gate announcing the name of the hotel, the drive leads through the desert to a beautiful white property. We were going for a Father's Day dinner at Benno, a Michelin Guide recommended restaurant at the hotel. As we had arrived early for our reservation, I asked if we could get a tour of the hotel and Mildred Perez, the Event & Guest Experience Manager was happy to do so.

When you arrive, there is valet parking of the square, which features a chapel and the entry to the hotel. Just inside the entry way, the welcome desk is on the left and Benno is on the right, but it is the view of the Pacific that immediately captures your eye, with Punta Lobos on the left. The whole center of the property is a beautiful long swimming pool with several sunken jacuzzis in it. Just past the check-in desk is a small library with large fire place and a store. The property has three restaurants - the Pool Bar, Benno, and a farm-to-table restaurant set in the middle of its farm area, open on weekends.

Hotel San Cristobal is also an event center with the chapel for weddings and a special event are near the beach just south of the main hotel. The hotel offers regular activities for its guests. The 32 rooms include Ocean Front, Ocean View and Mountain View choices. The Ocean Front suites include an outdoor deck with seating and a small plunge pool. The hotel also has a nice green area with a hammock for relaxing and reading in the afternoon.

We were very impressed with the property and the photos provide a good indication of the quality of the property. It sits on a long wide-open sandy beach that is swimmable. Fisherman also leave from the beach under Punta Lobos to catch great local fish. There is a hiking trail from the old fishery to the top of Punta Lobo with its spectacular views.

DISTRICT MX DURING CONSTRUCTION. Plaza Peninsula, just south of the roundabout has been devastated by the construction as the contractors regularly have closed off access to the lane that allows cars to exit to the plaza. The three restaurants in the plaza have tried almost everything to keep the road open or to provided directions to drivers on how to go under the highway through the culvert near Club Campestre Beach Club. Last Thursday, we drove down and parked behind the resident access to Club Campestre (which is also closed off then the road is closed) and walked over to District for dinner. When we arrived, there was one table of two and three people sitting in the bar in this very popular sports bar in San Jose del Cabo.

We chose our table and our server provided us the food, drink and Test menus and asked us what we would like to drink. As I am on a high protein - no carbohydrate diet, I asked Chef Chive what he could make that would accommodate my restrictions. He listed all of the meat and chicken dishes that he could adjust. I chose to have the New York steak and grilled large onions and asparagus. Beth looked through the new Test Menu, which features new items that they are testing to see if customers would like them to be added to the main menu and selected the Chicken Fried Rice Bowl. Our server asked what we would like to drink. Beth ordered a limonada minerale and I asked for a large house water with ice. He took me seriously and brought a stein reminiscent of the Hofbrau House in Munich.

The New York steak was cooked perfectly. It is 14 ounces and so I only ate about one third of it and took the rest home. The large grilled onion was amazing as were the asparagus spears. Beth said that the chicken fried rice was delicious and finished the whole large bowl. The food and service are always great. So, if you can try to fight the traffic and support District and the other two restaurants in the plaza.

On Tuesday, we had a meeting with the architect team from the Municipality to explore possible ways to improve the overall access to not only Plaza Peninsula but San Jose in general as everyone's business is down at least 40% due to the construction. They described the alternative routes that we being explored, but not finalized. Most of which involve using the arroyos, which tourists are unlikely to do. Another meeting has been set for next Tuesday at District. The next 14+ months is potentially going to be deadly for the whole town of San Jose del Cabo as no one from south of the town wants to come into the congestion.

UPDATING MY HEARING AIDS AT COSTCO. About four years ago, I went for my first hearing test at Costco. The result was the need for hearing aids. I took these older hearing aids in for service and was informed that they were only performing at about 80% and that Costco no longer carried them.

I made an appointment to have my hearing retested and to order new hearing aids. Cynthia, the audiologist who has helped me throughout the last four years sat me in the test room to have my new hearing test. These tests are very thorough and start with pushing a button when you hear tones in different frequencies and at different levels in each ear. The test continues with repeating words that you hear at different levels in each ear. The third stage that asks to push the button when you hear three tones that are at different levels and of different types. From these different tests, a profile of my hearing performance was created and compared with the last test that I had taken. Cynthia informed me that my hearing in one ear was about the same as the previous tests - at about 80% - but the other had declined about 10%.

Based on these results a specific hear aid - the Jabra Pro - was recommended for me. A test set was then used to adjust the setting for each ear and to allow to me to see how they functioned for me. I was asked to go out and walk around, make a phone call, and see if there were any issues with what I heard and how I heard myself talk. Once the settings all seemed to work well, Cynthia asked if I would like to purchase this model of hearing aids. I said yes and she took a new set from inventory and went through the process of adjusting the settings to my profile and testing them with me. She indicated that she would only take these to 80% and that I would have to return in two weeks to adjust them to full strength, once I was more used to them.

The hearing aids come with an app that allows you to connect through Bluetooth on your phone. Cynthia added some specific profiles that I requested - TV, live music, and outdoor. The app also permits you to adjust for wind noise, background noise and to focus the direction from which the sound is coming. With music you can adjust the level of bass, treble and mid-range to meet your preferences.

These new hearing aids have dramatically improved technology from the last pair, fit better in my ears, and feel more comfortable. I went back for the two-week adjustment and have been very happy. They are also rechargeable and so I don't not have to regularly change batteries as I did with the old pair.

Costco provides a great service with their hearing center. The hearing test is free and the staff are very professional and helpful. For more information or to make an appointment go to their website at https://www.costco.com.mx/store-finder/Los%20Cabos

The History Leading to Enjoy Los Cabos Life

Having been a part-time resident of Los Cabos since 1992, we have seen tremendous changes to the region. In the early days, roads were washed out every year; there were few places to shop and even the restaurants were limited. Now, Los Cabos is truly an international resort destination. For those of us who live here many of the difficulties of day-to-day living are gone. Costco, Home Depot, Walmart and great grocery stores have arrived. Some don’t like the development but tourism has brought many benefits to Los Cabos.

We decided to launch Enjoy Los Cabos Life because there really are few outlets that provide much more than listings of where to go and what to do. Much of the information has also focused primarily on Cabo San Lucas rather than all five regions of Los Cabos - The East Cape, San Jose del Cabo, the Corridor between San Jose and Cabo San Lucas, Cabo San Lucas and the Pacific side including Todos Santos. Over time, we hope to be able to provide good information, photos, videos and interviews that will showcase the places, people and lifestyles available in Los Cabos. We hope to launch a full website (enjoyloscaboslifestyle.com) late in 2019. If you have comments and suggestions, please email us at [email protected]
