KITCHEN SAN JOSE DEL CABO. Located on Jose Maria Morelos across from Lumbre, Kitchen recently changed its name from Kitchen Table. This unique outdoor restaurant was built in the courtyard of the old Aramburo School in the Art District in San Jose del Cabo. With seating at the long bar, in the bar and in an outdoor dining room, the atmosphere is extremely pleasant, especially as the sun goes down and the lighting of the restaurant comes on. Kitchen's menu is unique as it offers small and big bites or two different tasting menus to experience almost everything on the menu. As there is often a relatively big group when we venture to dinner at Kitchen, we order many of the small bites on the menu and let everyone at the table have a taste. This night was no different.

The dinner always starts with Andrea - their name for their sourdough bread that is served with smoky butter. It is absolutely delicious. So, as everyone got their favorite beverage and sampled the sourdough and smoky butter we made our food choices. From the small bites menu, the table ordered the Heirloom Tomatoes, Crispy Shrimp Tempura with tempura chiles, Sirloin Croquettes, Shrimp Empanadas, French Fries, Charcoal Roasted Beats and Gorgonzola, and Sweet Potato Puffs. For main courses, Jackie selected the Mussels & Fries, Jerry, the Charcoal Grilled Catch of the Day, and Kevin decided to try the tasting menu. The presentation and variety of flavors on the table was incredible. We were all quiet for a while as we sampled the great food.

For dessert, the table was split between the Lemon Brulée - a lemon tart with a caramelized top, like creme brulée - and the chocolate mousse, served in a small canning jar. We were all offered a shot of a cacao coffee liqueur.

Overall, it was an excellent evening with good food, great service from Miguel and great company.

ROOT CANAL AND CROWN AT DENTAL STUDIO BY PEDRO ORTIZ. I never had problems with my teeth when I was younger. Now, it seems that for the first time, I am getting regular cavities. I am glad to have the expertise of Dr. Pedro Ortiz to address these problems. With a few implants and a few root canals and crowns, I have been more or less, pain free. At my recent cleaning appointment, they found a new cavity that would require a root canal. An appointment was set, and Dr. Pedro took a digital x-ray to show me the cavity in a lower back molar, how close it was to the root, and explained what would have to be done. Forty-five minutes later, the root canal was finished, and a temporary crown was put on. Dr. Pedro is always concerned that there is no pain and minimal discomfort during the procedure. Just raise my hand, and he will give me a breather.

The second appointment a week and a half later was to create and fit the crown on the teeth. The level of digitization of dentistry still continues to amaze me. After removing the temporary, a blue laser wand is used to digitally recreate the tooth and that area of the mouth - both lower and upper. The data is immediately transferred to a monitor behind the chair that displays the results. Wearing 3D glasses, Dr. Pedro then digitally adjusts this image to provide the perfect fit for the crown. The crown is then sent to the 3D cutter in a room across the hall, where the crown is created, having selected the matching color for the crown in advance. It takes about ten minutes for the crown to be created. Dr. Pedro then fit it on the molar and tested the height to make sure it is correct. Using a small sheet, he asked me to close my bite, leaving marks where the upper and lower teeth don't match perfectly. The level is then adjusted. The whole process of removing the temporary, measuring for the crown, creating it, and fitting again took about 45 minutes.

Dr Pedro and his team of assistants due an amazing job, and at a cost significantly less than in the United States or Canada. Thank you, sir.

DON SANCHEZ FOR MY BIRTHDAY. Our daughter came to visit for my birthday. As she is vegan, we had to find a place that all of us would enjoy. I remembered that Don Sanchez on Blvd Mijares by the plaza in San Jose del Cabo had a significant number of vegan options on the menu, and so I made a reservation for the three of us. The hostess greeted us and immediately asked if we had any allergies and Chava explained that she was allergic to seafood and was vegan. This information was passed on to our server Santiago.

The outdoor dining area at Don Sanchez is absolutely stunning. The owner and chef, Edgar Roman said that it took about six months to renovate the interior area to create the restaurant with materials entirely from Baja California. The restaurant is on three levels with a bar and lounge near the entry and hostess stand, a second level where the live entertainment, dining and the wine room and private dining area are placed and a lower level, partially under a palapa.

The menu is extensive and unique. It is also regularly updated. Our daughter found a lot of menu items of interest to her. Santiago also told her that any of the vegetarian dishes could also be prepared vegan. As we studied the menu, we ordered drinks. I ordered a bottle of Chalk Hill Chardonnay from Sonoma and Chava chose a bright red cocktail. Our second server brought us a platter of rolls and a smoky butter. The butter arrived under a dome with the smoke inside. The also brought a second butter made with cashew nuts rather than dairy that was vegan.

As we ordered our dinner, we were offered an amuse bouche of a small beet taco. It had a bit of a kick and so I benefited by getting to eat two of them. For appetizers, Beth selected the Caesar Salad made table side with a traditional dressing. I chose the Roasted Poblano and Cashew Cream soup that came with a small round ball of soursop ice cream in the center. Chava chose the Golden Onion Tinga Sopes. The presentation, flavor, and quality of each of these dishes was excellent (I sampled them all). The table side Caesar was a show, and my soup was poured into the bowl that already held the ice cream.

Between courses we were offered a citrus sorbet as a palate cleanser. For main courses, Beth had the grilled artichokes, which were served with coconut rice pilaf and carrot purée. Chava ordered the Mixed Wild Mushrooms that were served over risotto. She easily identified several different types of mushrooms across the risotto. I went all out and selected the Pork Shank, which was huge and fell off the bone. There was enough for two more meals at home in the next days.

During dinner Chef Edgar came over to say hello and ask how our dinner was proceeding. There was a vocalist with a loop performing great classic songs just right for the audience and atmosphere of the restaurant.

Although full and sated, we weren't finished. Next was dessert. Santiago described a special vegan cheesecake, and Beth selected the warm churros with caramel and chocolate sauces. The cheese cake was delivered with a candle and happy birthday written in chocolate. The chef also sent up our choice of after dinner drinks - a homemade Bailey's, cognac and a fine scotch to toast the food, restaurant, and my birthday. The final delight was three small chocolates. What a night!

The atmosphere, food, and service at Don Sanchez were excellent. Having two servers assigned to every table, it is always and amazing experience.

EXTRA LARGE AT SHADE AT LA FORTUNA ON THE EAST CAPE. Extra Large is a band from Santa Cruz, California. Valerie and Russell, the front of the band are retired teachers and own a home in Shipwrecks on the East Cape. The band has six members - Valerie on Percussion and Vocals, Russell on flute, saxophone, guitar and vocals, Dan on a portable keyboard and vocals, Dave on lead guitar, Sandman on rhythm guitar, and Killer on drums. In all the shows, that I have seen, I have never seen Valerie without a smile on her face. Russell dances on stage, urges the audience to get up and dance, and even wanders through the crowd with a wireless microphone. Their repertoire is wide. The songs often have a reggae beat to them, whether a classic rock hit or an original tune. If you haven't seen Extra Large live, you are missing a great time.

As Extra Large is so much fun, here is them performing "Yes I Do" at Shade at La Fortuna. Enjoy!

PLANS FOR THE ROUNDABOUT IN SAN JOSE DEL CABO. Ever since the end of COVID, the traffic in Los Cabos has become worse and worse. The biggest roadblock (no pun intended) has been the roundabout between La Comer and Chedraui in San Jose del Cabo. With the current construction of Home Depot at the same location, it can only get worse. Local officials have tried to remedy the problem somewhat by have police control the traffic during the three key travel times during the day. In the evening traffic coming north can be backed up beyond Palmilla.

The long-term solution to this problem is a redesign of the roundabout. Currently, the design is apparently about 80% complete, will be started in 2025 and completed in 2026. A rending is included below. However, we can only imagine what the traffic will be like during construction. The design includes underground north and southbound lanes for traffic that is going straight through and additional lanes to merge to enter on both the north and southbound sides.

All we can do is hope that it will be completed as soon as possible with as little disruption as possible.

MARISCOS EL TIBERON DE SAN CARLOS. There is a new seafood restaurant in San Jose del Cabo located behind the stadium at the corner of Copa Mexico 70 and Idelfonso Green - Mariscos El Tiberon De San Carlos. This is a the end of the block off Centenario to the north of Mariscos El Toro Guero. Open for just under eight months, this restaurant is under a large palapa with pea gravel floors and tables with wooden and Puerto Vallarta chairs. Large flat screen TVs play videos of Mexican music. The menu is extensive with appetizers, cold seafood specialties, seafood cocktails, aguachiles, ceviche, oysters and clams in the shell, tostadas, tacos, grilled octopus, lobster, shrimp, and fish filets. There are even meat and chicken choices for non-seafood lovers, and a kid's menu.

My server brought a large basket of tostadas, crackers, and a chipotle sauces as a starter for the table, which also had a basket of every hot sauce you can image. I decide to start with a half-order of shrimp cocktail followed by an order of Baja Fish tacos. The shrimp cocktail was bigger enough for two - and it was only a half order. The milkshake glass was filled with shrimp, avocado, onions, and celery in a cocktail sauce. It was delicious and so big that I took more than half of it home. I was to find the portion size had a trend in El Tiberon. The Baja fish tacos order had three large tacos in flour tortillas, each with three large pieces of battered fish in them. The plate also had Pico de Gallo, Coleslaw, guacamole, and another green salsa. This would have easily been enough for two people to share. They were delicious, and once again, I took one taco and a few extra pieces of fish home.

This is a great new hidden gem. The menus are available in both English and Spanish. My server was perfectly fluent. The overall restaurant is extremely well organized - numbered tables, servers with electronic iPads for ordering, and a large serving staff. So, the service was also excellent. The prices were very reasonable, especially given the portion size. My total bill, with a soda was $400 mx or about $20.00. The tacos were only $140 mx. I will be going back and highly recommend the experience.

GASTRO HEALTH DR LUIS ENRIQUE SOTELO SOLIS. Once every 10 years it is time to have a colonoscopy. One of our neighbors recommended Dr Luis Enrique Sotelo Solis, who has offices both at H+ Hospital and in the AltaVista building just north of the old convention center. The first appointment is always a consultation. While I waited to meet the doctor, his nurse came into the waiting room and took my blood pressure, oxygenation, and temperature. Entering the consultation room, Dr Luis introduced himself and his nurse and asked me for the reason why I was there and then more detailed questions about my health history. After this was finished, he asked me to move to the cot in his office, where he used the stethoscope to check my heart and lungs. I then asked me to lie down, turned out the lights and used a sonogram to check my liver, kidneys, and bladder. I was extremely impressed at how thorough this first consultation was - certainly dramatically more so that my experiences in the United States.

At the end of the consultation, Dr Luis looked at this calendar and booked my appointment for a colonoscopy and endoscopy for Monday of the next week. I had complained of blockages of my esophagus that appeared to be due to food allergies, which requires a biopsy to check for Eosinophilic Esophagitis. He suggested that both be performed at the same time to minimize sedation. He provided a prescription for the items for the preparation for the colonoscopy, which could be filled next door at the We Care Pharmacy.

I arrived at 8:30 on Monday morning, the receptionist gave me a series of permission and medical history forms to complete. I was then led to the two rooms in the back of the office - recovery and treatment room - given a gown and shown to the bathroom, which contained lockers. Entering the treatment room, the anesthesiologist introduced herself and her nurse, described what they were going to do and started an IV for sedation. They also sprayed my throat with a numbing agent. It did take long until I was out and about 90 minutes later, I was moved to the recovery room, where Dr Luis gave me an overview of the results - everything was clear, asked several times if my wife or I had any questions, and told me that the results of the biopsy would be available in about 15 days.

I got dressed and went out to the reception area to pay the bill. I was shocked when I saw that the cost was dramatically less that what my copay would have been in the United States - about $850 for everything. The anesthesiologist would have been more. The report and videos arrived on my phone as we were leaving the parking lot. I was extremely impressed with the doctors, nurses, staff, and the whole process.

TEATRO PESCADERO. When I worked in Manhattan, one of the things that my wife and I enjoyed the most was the ability to see almost every musical on Broadway. Theater is one of the activities that we felt was missing in Los Cabos. However, similar to the live music scene, Todos Santos and Pescadero also offer some live theater. One of the venues is Teatro Pescadero. A 2020 creation of Dillon Porter and Mehry Eslaminia, who have both performed on Broadway, Teatro Pescadero prides itself on offering the community live performances that have been created locally. One of the plays, The Prophet was adapted to bring to life Kahlil Gibran’s words, exploring the universal themes of love, freedom, marriage, and death. The play started under the stars in Baja but since has been performed in over 200 locations around the world.

Since opening in 2020, Teatro Pescadero has offered a number of different plays - The Prophet, Dillon on Dylan, Speedo Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet and A Midsummer Night's Dream, Todos Santos Newsfeed: The Musical ™️, Walt Whitman, and Love in the Time of Corona. Teatro Pescadero created Todos Santos Newsfeed: The Musical in 2021. Early this year, with six performances in January, the musical returned to Teatro Pescadero. Todos Santos Newsfeed: The Musical makes light of the drama of everything that happens in Todos Santos. A combination of music, comedy, and drama, the play was so successful that an encore performance was demanded. On March 12, 2025, Todos Santos Newsfeed: The Musical will be performed once again.

Teatro Pescadero combines outdoor theater with a theater under a dome of sticks in Pescadero. The dome is used for intimate performances of plays like The Prophet that are limited to 24 people. But Teatro Pescadero is much more than just a theater. It is a community resource staging fundraisers to support local volunteer firefighters and offering educational opportunities for young children through fun and play.

The team at Teatro Pescadero is currently working on their next play - a spaghetti western. Some photos from Todos Santos Newsfeed: The Musical are presented below.

KIDS MONSTERS AT ALMA DE MEXICO. The real thrill of the evening was the live entertainment - Kids Monsters. These five extremely talented siblings, ranging in age from 15 to 27 took the house down. With a repertoire that featured hits of the 60s and 70s and a few recent songs, they demonstrated not only their ability to play their instruments, but their ability to entrain and engage the audience. The drummer and lead vocalist could sound like almost anyone - from Steve Perry of Journey to Axel Rose of Guns n' Roses to Louis Armstrong. The 15-year-old keyboard player was just as comfortable on the lead vocals as on her electronic keyboard. The young female bass player twirled her hair, jumped around the stage, danced with the audience and played her bass as she moved around the room. The 18-year-old girl was equally comfortable on guitar, percussion, or saxophone. The oldest brother screamed with lead guitar solos. Where did all this talent come from? It was clear when their father joined them on both drums and guitar for the last few songs. What an amazing band?

Here is their version of Journey's Don't Stop Believin". Enjoy!

ALMA DE MEXICO. Located at the corner of Alvaro Obregon and Vicente Guerrero at the north end of the Art District in San Jose del Cabo is a unique business that combines a restaurant, a market with small artisanal stands, live music, and a spa - Alma de Mexico.

We climbed the stairs to the second-floor location and were greeted by the hostess who led us to a table for four. Our server, Karely brought us menus and asked what we would like to drink. Tracey ordered a Mezcalita, Beth a limonada minerale and I asked for a glass of chardonnay. We were brought a basket of tortilla chips and two salsas to nibble while we looked over the menu. The menu offers a full range of Mexican dishes - empanadas, quesadillas, tacos, fajitas, molcajete, enchiladas, as well as shrimp and beef specialties. We ordered guacamole to share to start, which was served in a large stone bowl with a crisp tostada. For main courses, Tracey selected the fajitas de pollo served with rice and beans, and Beth chose the mango shrimp served on rice with a side salad. Both dishes came with a basket of flour tortillas. I decided on the Baja fish tacos tempura style. The two tacos were loaded with lettuce, cabbage, and shredded carrots and a sauce with just a little spice.

The flavor, portion size, and presentation were very good and the prices quite reasonable. Karely was an excellent server and kept us in drinks throughout the evening.

However, the real thrill of the evening was the live entertainment - Kids Monsters. These five extremely talented siblings, ranging in age from 15 to 27 took the house down. With a repertoire that featured hits of the 60s and 70s and a few recent songs, they demonstrated not only their ability to play their instruments, but their ability to entrain and engage the audience. It was clear when their father joined them on both drums and guitar for the last few songs. What an amazing band?

Overall, this was one of the best nights out that we have had in a while for both the entertainment, atmosphere, food and service. We are already planning to take a big group back in a few weeks on a Wednesday night when Kids Monsters play.

BLUE MOON FOLLIES AT TEATRO LUNA AZUL IN TODOS SANTOS. Every child deserves the chance to be on stage and perform. This is exactly the opportunity that Jewels Nation created with the Blue Moon Follies at Teatro Luna Azul on February 22 and 23rd. A group of children ranging from 3 years old to teenagers rehearsed for weeks to show their talent to the community. This two-hour performance showcased the dancing, singing, and improvisation skills of this talented group of young performers. As Jewels said at one point, "I am the understudy for every role in this show," as she led the children and performed right along with them. The audience clapped and cheered for the children as they performed. The show began with a drum circle of adults, which heralded the arrival of all of the performers to the stage. Jewels introduced four young girls who came to her on the first day of rehearsals with a dance number that they had choreographed themselves. Every child had the opportunity to improvise doing something of their own choice.

At the half-way point of the show, Rhythm Complex dance students of different ages performed a series of spirited dance numbers. The only two adult performances in the show were by Jewels herself and Chava Tzemach, who was helping Jewels with coordinating the performers through this spirited event.

Thank you, Jewels Nation, for what you did for these children and the community.

02/26/2025

COOL BEANS LOS CABOS. Are you a lover of the music, food and lifestyle of the late 60s and early 70s? Then, Cool Beans Los Cabos is a restaurant that you may want to visit. Located on the corner of Ignacio Zaragoza (the down street) and VicenteGuerrero in the Art District in San Jose de Cabo, Cool Beans was created in small town Kansas by Angela Stoughton, who grew up influenced by her flower child mother, listening to her mother's turntable constantly playing the music of the 60s and 70s. She learned to cook in her grandmother's kitchen and ultimately opened the first Cool Beans in Sterling, Kansas.

These influences are clearly shown in the design of the restaurant (inside and outside) and the menu. Murals adorn the outside walls and windows of the great bands of this era. A rack of magazines like Life and Time are displayed in two magazines racks for people to explore the time period for themselves. There are statutes of Elvis, The Blues Brothers, and hippie chicks in the restaurant. The walls are covered with old posters of rock bands, and even at hooked rug of mushrooms. The furniture is classic 60s American diner with booths and tables in two-tone blue. There are even Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man video games in the main dining room. The rooftop dining, where live music is played has a large bar in the shape of an old VW bus.

The names of the dishes on the menu reflect the emotions, music and lifestyles of the period. The choices on the menu range from sandwiches, soups and salads with names like in-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, Bliss, Elation, and Glass Onion. There are also some Feel Good Foods - meat loaf, Shepherd's Pie - Hippie Meals - Peanut Butter and Jam Sandwich, Grilled Cheese, and Psychedelic Sweets. Of course, there are also milkshakes and floats.

We decided to try some of the traditional meals. I started with the Shake a Tail Feather creamy chicken soup. It had large chunks of potato, carrots, and chicken in the creamy broth and was pretty good and filling. For the main course, Beth chose the American Pie - Shepherd's Pie with ground beef and vegetables in a pastry crust - served with a side salad and corn on the cob. I ordered the I'D Do Anything For Love - Meatloaf with a slice of provolone cheese on top, served with corn on the cob. Both main courses came with a couple slices of bread. Beth ordered a chocolate milkshake to accompany her meal.

Overall, I would say that we more excited by the concept and design of the restaurant than by the food. The flavors were a little bland and did not meet the expectations created by the menu. The service was excellent. As the restaurant has only been open for a few weeks, we will give it another try after they have had a chance to work out some of the issues.

The History Leading to Enjoy Los Cabos Life

Having been a part-time resident of Los Cabos since 1992, we have seen tremendous changes to the region. In the early days, roads were washed out every year; there were few places to shop and even the restaurants were limited. Now, Los Cabos is truly an international resort destination. For those of us who live here many of the difficulties of day-to-day living are gone. Costco, Home Depot, Walmart and great grocery stores have arrived. Some don’t like the development but tourism has brought many benefits to Los Cabos.

We decided to launch Enjoy Los Cabos Life because there really are few outlets that provide much more than listings of where to go and what to do. Much of the information has also focused primarily on Cabo San Lucas rather than all five regions of Los Cabos - The East Cape, San Jose del Cabo, the Corridor between San Jose and Cabo San Lucas, Cabo San Lucas and the Pacific side including Todos Santos. Over time, we hope to be able to provide good information, photos, videos and interviews that will showcase the places, people and lifestyles available in Los Cabos. We hope to launch a full website (enjoyloscaboslifestyle.com) late in 2019. If you have comments and suggestions, please email us at [email protected]
