We have jumped headfirst into planning for our Veterans giveaway stay. I have started calling in some favors for things we will need for this undertaking. Everyone has been very receptive and helpful so far which is truly appreciated. I will be posting periodically looking for things that we want to be able to have for the Veteran. We will be having a sponsors board on display during the Veterans stay and have a social media push showcasing our sponsors. The selection process as I said for our veterans giveaway was extremely tough. We went outside our original hopes a whisker but it was a no brainer after reading the nomination sent in for our winner. It’s a beautiful Sunday at the lake. We had some truly incredible nominations for our Veteran Giveaway. It was extremely hard to pick the most deserving to say the least. We considered every name that was given to us and came down to a final two. I will not be announcing the selected Veteran publicly until I have confirmation they will be able to attend. We have also selected a alternate if needed. I have sent word out to our selected Veterans representative and will be waiting to hear back and the I will give out more information.

I have decided to close the entry period a little earlier than originally planned so we can select a deserving Veteran and start tailoring the adventure for them. Does it need to be Veterans Day to thank a Veteran? Absolutely not. Kari and I have been working on a idea for a while and we are ready to kick it off. We are going to offer a absolutely free all inclusive stay at Witt’s End for a Veteran and up to 3 of his/her family/guests. The arrival date will be Wednesday, September 11 with a departure of Sunday, September 15. We have been working to put together a bunch of great adventures for the veteran to participate in depending on their physical abilities and desire. I don’t want to list all these until we have selected the Veteran and let them decide what they would like but I can tell you we have lined up some incredible adventures. The stay will culminate with a luncheon on Saturday that will be opened up to other Veterans to come and join celebrating our guest of honor. How are we going to select a winner? We are looking for a older Veteran. We will sort by WW2, Korean War, and Vietnam War Veterans and select from those. We realize that the WW2 and Korean War Veterans are down to a handful but there are still a representation that are doing well. Here’s what I am asking. If you know a Veteran who would enjoy this please private message me their name, a contact phone number, and what time period they served. We will be taking submissions until June 15. Please share this post and help us make this a memorable trip for a deserving Veteran. Interested in volunteering with us? We are also compiling a list of potential volunteers to assist in some of the planned activities and making all the delicious home cooked meals for the Veteran and for the Saturday luncheon.

I am blown away by the support that has been blindly offered after my teaser on my project I’m getting ready to drop for a well deserving veteran. Friends that I served with and friends in general have messaged and said “just let me know where and when, I will be there.” This is coming together quickly but I know it’s going to be amazing. This will be year one and my plan is to watch it grow from there. Tentatively I think the announcement will be Wednesday….. Stay tuned

I have been kicking around a idea for a few years to thank our veterans for the sacrifices they have made for us. We stand more divided than ever as a nation but I will not falter in my gratitude to our veterans. I have started calling in some favors and if I haven’t hit you up yet standby because I will be. The hospitality business can be tough. Making sure everyone is happy isn’t always easy. That being said I let my reviews speak for themselves. I don’t list on Airbnb that much anymore because we are lucky enough to be at the point we are booked with returning guests the majority of the time. We had a group of Chinese students over the past weekend and they were thrilled with their stay. They were able to see 2 moose, climbed the fire tower, and did a bunch of kayaking. I don’t claim to have the fanciest place on the lake but it has not yet disappointed a single guest in 3 years. I think that says a lot.

Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife made a delivery of 750 brook trout a couple days ago. It’s gonna be a GREAT year on the water again on Deering Lake. Teach your kids right. I struggle a little more each year with some of the bigger jobs around camp. I was working on getting the dock in today. I needed help with the ramps from the shore to the dock. My neighbor arrived to his camp with one of his sons. I went over for a visit and he told me his son was really excited to get into fishing. I spoke with his son and said I’ll make a deal with you. Help me with my dock in the morning and I’ll take you fishing tomorrow. This led to a discussion from his father with him explaining this is how it works up here. Take care of you neighbors and they will take care of you. I know my kids understand this and go out of their way to help people. Teach your youngsters to do the same.

I toured the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife hatchery in Grand Lake Stream yesterday. It is incredibly interesting to see the process from start to finish of the salmon program. It is incredibly labor intensive. I would encourage you to go visit. They love having people come learn about what they do

I spent many a night on March 31 getting my gear ready to fish Pearce brook in Houlton on opening day of open water brook fishing. The trout I caught out of there are some of the most memorable for me. There was not many times I returned home without a limit of trout. There were only a handful of us youngsters that fished it religiously. Friends like Kevin Smith,Jody Hammond and a few others logged a lot of hours on that brook. I open the door from my camp onto the enclosed porch on warmer days as my dog Weston likes to hang out and watch over the lake. He started losing his mind a few minutes ago like I haven’t heard from the young pup. I looked out and a otter was running by camp on the ice. They always show up this time of the year. Operation ReBoot OutDoors is the organization that took me on a red stag hunting trip that I’ll never forget. The derby this weekend is one of their big fundraisers of the year. Pulled a nice salmon out of 3 feet of water this afternoon while fishing for brook trout close to shore

It’s exciting to watch fish taking line. It can be hard to be patient and wait for the fish to stop.

The lake is out there somewhere I am pretty sure. Time to start getting the ice fishing gear ready to rock and the snowmobiles tuned up. Winter has arrived at Witt’s End today

People ask why I always get up so early. This is why. There is nothing like watching the sunrise on the lake. I always try to convince guests it’s worth getting up and watching.
