He works for a church group called "New Life for Haiti" in construction and painting. He's from the Grand Ans River Valley which is the southern tip of Haiti. He's 20, loves American music and is learning English. He also sings for children at kids camps in Haitian schools. When we met him, he immediately called us his best friends."

"We were at Afrikaburn. It's a festival where people come together in Tankwa Karoo. Music, costumes, and art surround the campsites in the middle of the desert. A small community is formed and the experiences here can be life changing. We were in the binnekring of the festival at the kissing booth. We had begun dating for a bit and we camped together with her friends. It was May 2015."

An open letter to a fallen marine's mother,

"I only had about a year and a half left in the squadron when Dillon checked into 463. What I remember most about him was that I was immediately impressed by his posture, demeanor, and confidence. There was no doubt in anyone's mind that Dillon was a good as they came, and could not ask for a better marine.
Dillon carried himself extremely well right from the get go and it was something that was truly admired. Often times when Marines check in they spend several weeks, if not months, trying to blend in with the crowd or avoid attention at all. My peers and I knew right away that he would be the guy that would be filling our shoes as we transferred out of the unit or ended our tour of duty.
To be honest with you I was quite jealous of how confident he was. It took me a little bit of time to assimilate to the culture and feel like I belonged. Dillon knew he belonged right away, and deservingly so. Dillon, as you know, was a natural born leader.
What I will say about Dillon's passing is that it will continue to push me in life. Inherently Marines always strive to better themselves. Dillon was always very respectful of his seniors and looked up to them. What he may not have known is that we all looked up to him as well. Know that you will forever have a close tie to Dillon through all of the Marines that he touched."

"I drove by that kid every week on the road, and every week I'd hand them money. They would pick flowers to sell to foreigners. They were new to the area searching for oil."
