Competitors who have won many tournaments in domaniting fashion, offer a unique perspective on this. In competitions where pulling guard is penalized, there’s a greater emphasis on developing a strong takedown game. While not all competition formats stress takedowns equally, the absence of takedown skills in a gifted grappler is often seen as a significant gap in their abilities.
Competitors can repeatedly observe that incorporating Judo and Wrestling into their training camp makes tournaments easier. This advantage isn’t just due to increased self-confidence, stronger grips, or improved cardio. Read Your Opponents: The Key To Success In BJJ Competition
If you want to win BJJ matches more often than not, then it’s a must that you develop a solid game plan.

You need to know what you want to do and how to get there – otherwise, you’re jumping into the pool without knowing how deep it is… Without a life-rescue vest.
However, knowing just what you want to do won’t cut it either. Rather, you have to learn how to read your opponents as well.

What does this mean? Coach John Danaher has the answer:
… Always read your opponent so you gain information of what he is trying to do so that you can first negate and then capitalize on his intentions.

The second you put your hands on your opponent you can read his level of physical tension and what direction his body wants to move.
Danaher emphasizes that you have to use this ability:
It’s like a a different form of vision and one that gives you real insight into your opponents game. It’s much easier to beat someone when you know what they want to do.
The best scenario is one where you know what YOU want to do and also what your OPPONENT wants to do.

When you know both you’ll be very difficult to defeat.

Judo and BJJ: Similar Jacket, different rules and mentality.
Judo training will vastly improve your Jiu-Jitsu and vice versa. However, both sports have their own set of rules and have different goals and mindset. For example, in Judo the match is won by ippon when the opponent is thrown flat on their back or when pinned on the ground for 20 seconds. For those reasons, BJJ players need to know how to “modify” and adapt Judo accordingly for BJJ.
Josh Beam, a BJJ blue belt, steped into the world of Judo at CJ Judo in San Jose, California, led by Judo black belt instructor Chuck Jefferson.
The Randori Experience:
Josh, who has competed in 62 BJJ tournament matches, wants to improve his stand-up game by diving into Judo. The video showcases his first official randori session at a Judo school, where he faces a variety of opponents, including white, blue, brown, and black belts.
Josh engages in nine rounds of randori, sparring with judokas of different belts and skill levels. This includes a challenging round with the sensei Chuck Jefferson himself.

ADCC 2024 European Trials Results & Review
On February 17, 2022, Zagreb, Croatia hosted a Brazilian jiu-jitsu competition that featured top athletes vying for medals and spots in the 2024 ADCC World Championships.
Several winners emerged as predicted in their divisions, but there were also some surprising outcomes along the way. Perhaps the most unexpected result came in the under 88kg division where Taylor Pearman dominated to victory against tough opposition. Mark Macqueen was a surprising winner in the over 99kg division and Gairbeg Ibragimov won all seven of his matches against some of the best grapplers in the under 66kg class.
Tommy Langaker placed first in the under 77kg division. The women’s divisions also saw some favorites achieve early success, as both of the lighter weight classes were won by established competitors: Margot Ciccarelli took the under 55kg division, and Aurelie Le Vern earned the gold medal at under 65kg. However, there was a major upset in the over 65kg division, as the up-and-coming Nia Blackman secured an invite to ADCC 2024 despite facing more experienced opponents.
Poland, a strong presence in European grappling, had 39 competitors and earned four medals, including one qualification to the World Championships. The Polish athletes got off to a strong start, with most winning their opening matches via submission. Success continued in subsequent rounds, but obstacles emerged in the quarterfinals and semifinals. Unfortunately, most Poles fell short at those stages. Marcin Maciulewicz of Alligatores MMA had a noteworthy performance, winning six matches including three by submission.

Watch: Merab Carries Cejudo Around like a Baby at UFC 298 and Jokes with Zuckerberg
At UFC 298 in Anheim, California this past Saturday, Merab Dvalishvili demonstrated his readiness to challenge for the Ultimate bantamweight championship. The Georgian fighter dominated former two-division champion and Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo over three rounds.
Despite controlling Dvalishvili for much of the first round, Cejudo was unable to stop “Machine’s” momentum, as the European maintained a strong pace through the final two rounds and outperformed the Olympic champion. Furthermore, Dvalishvili interacted with Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, who observed the fight from the audience.
In the end, Merab won by unanimous decision at UFC 298 and reaffirmed his intention to fight for the title in his next bout. The fighter also called out reigning champion Sean O’Malley, who was seated in the first row. Since returning from retirement, Cejudo has yet to secure a victory and may again remove himself from competition.
