It is with deep sadness that I deliver the news of the passing of longtime Wolcott Softball Coach Chip Schofield.
Chip grew up in Wolcott and I had the pleasure to work with him as Police Officers in Naugatuck for over 20 years.
All of Chips daughters were softball standouts in Naugatuck, however his youngest daughter Megan was part of the original travel softball team that started the Wolcott Eagles Travel Softball program.
Chip played a huge part in coaching and developing that team and selflessly dedicated a ridiculous amount of his time working with not just his own daughter but with all the players on that team.
Chip coached the “Eagles 01’s”
with coaches Eric Sharkey and Al Rotella from 2011-2012 as a first year 12U squad through the teams final 18U season in 2020.
The team under the leadership of Coach Chip and the other “Eagles 01” coaches had many success over the years, but the success Chip was always most proud of was that of the development of life skills that come from playing youth sports and specifically travel softball. The ups and downs of a season, long practices, tournaments and games. Playing through extreme hot and cold, long days at the field and fighting through any adversity they would face.
Chip not only taught this but lived it. He displayed his resilience during his long but courageous fight with cancer and he battled it as he taught his players - just keep fighting and to never give up.
Chips main slogan while fighting cancer was “Chip Strong” this phrase displays his resilience, heart, toughness he had within, he truly led by example.
On behalf of everyone you touched as a coach, police officer and community volunteer we thank you for your selflessness and commitment to your community. Your life will never be forgotten because of the lasting impacts you made on the many lives you touched.
Our thoughts, prayers and condolences are with the Schofield family, forever members of our WGSA family
God bless and forever Chip Strong
