Never use an oven to heat your home.
Ovens are designed for quick cooking, not to sustain the heating of a large space. While operating, ovens release fumes and byproducts. If you use an oven to heat your home, you can deteriorate the indoor air quality, which could cause respiratory issues for yourself and your family.

This festive season, decorate with safety in mind.
▪️ Remember, if you have a live Christmas tree, water it daily. A dry Christmas tree can burn quickly.
▪️ DO NOT place the tree less than 3 feet from a heat source, such as a fireplace, heater, radiator, candles, heat outlets, or lights.
▪️ When it comes to decorative lighting, use UL-approved lights, and remember that some lights are for outdoor use only.
▪️ TURN OFF ALL decorations before leaving the house or going to bed.

This past weekend, at the Occoquan Fall Arts & Crafts Show, Sparky and Assistant Chief Kurt Bolland were setting up cribbing for a game of Jenga using spreaders, commonly known as the "Jaws of Life."
Cribbing is a temporary wooden structure we build to support and stabilize heavy objects. For example, a vehicle involved in an auto accident when an extrication is needed.

When operating a fire extinguisher, remember the word PASS:
Pull the pin. Hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you and release the locking mechanism.
Aim low. Point the extinguisher at the base of the fire.
Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly.
Lastly, remember to sweep the nozzle from side to side. This ensures that the entire fire area is covered.

National Poison Prevention Week wraps up today!
One of the most important safety features you should have in place in your home is a carbon monoxide detector. The best places for a CO detector are near bedrooms and close to furnaces.
If your detector is beeping, immediately go outside to get fresh air, and call 911.
If you ever feel better when you are out of your home and worse when you return, CO may be present. If you notice this, call 911. Have the fire department check for CO in your house. If CO is present, the source must be repaired before it is safe to return home.
