The recently featured Worcester resident Marshall “Major” Taylor! He was a world champion at a time when cycling was one of the most popular international sports, and he was also the first African American global sports superstar.

The Major Taylor Association erected this statue of Taylor, which now stands in front of the Worcester Public Library. Also downtown, steps away from his namesake boulevard, you can visit The Major Taylor Museum in Worcester’s former courthouse. The one-room exhibit is beautifully curated: archival photographs have been blown up and arranged along the brick walls, and artifacts include a period racing bike under glass, and a French magazine from the era covering one of his European tours. There are explanatory plaques everywhere, while touch-screens and a pair of stationary bicycles help visitors interact with history.

Taylor’s story remained an obscure footnote until 1988 when author Andrew Ritchie revived interest in the athlete by writing the book Major Taylor: The Extraordinary Career of a Champion Bicycle Rider. The book helped propel Taylor to be inducted into the US Bicycling Hall of Fame in 1989. It also inspired the US House of Representatives to consider a bill that would award Taylor the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest civilian honour US citizens can receive. Were Taylor to receive it, he would become just the 17th African American in history to receive the award.

We’re celebrating - formerly known as Worcester Historical Museum - and their 150 years of service to preserving local history.

In 1875, Samuel E. Staples (1822-1902), a successful grocer and bookkeeper, invited four history devotees, Daniel Seagrave, Richard O’Flynn, John Smith, and Franklin Rice, to his home at 1 Lincoln Place in Worcester and “…proposed to form a Society for the purpose of increasing an interest in Archaeological Science, and to rescue from oblivion such historical matter as would otherwise be lost…” That meeting established the society that would become The Museum of Worcester.
