The Butler Institute of American Art is celebrating Black History Month during February. They will highlight important Black artists and their works throughout the month with docent-led tours for area students and adults.

Other events taking place in February are a talk by Dr. Dee Banks, physician and visual artist, who will give a talk tomorrow, Sunday, February 2 at 2pm in the Butler’s Zona Auditorium entitled 10 Contemporary Artists.

Amos Paul Kennedy, Jr. will be at the Butler for a meet-the-artist reception on Saturday, February 15 from 1-3pm for his exhibition The Art is on the Wall, Not on the Posters. Kennedy creates prints, posters, and postcards from handset wood and metal type, oil-based inks, and eco-friendly and affordable chipboard.

Join the Mahoning Valley Historical Society this Thursday, January 16 at noon for Bites and Bits of History when Cassie Nespor, Curator of the Melnick Medical Museum and YSU Archives, discusses, “Caring for the sick: Youngstown physicians, nurses, and hospitals from 1910 – 1920.” This presentation will discuss the modernization of the two hospitals in Youngstown as well as the home care provided by doctors and nurses in the city. Bring your lunch to the Tyler History Center’s Thomas Ballroom for this free educational event.
