Mill Creek MetroParks presents “Bug Day” at Ford Nature Center this Saturday, July 20 from 11am-3pm! 🦋🐛🐞 This free, family friendly event will include live bug exhibits, including "The BugMan", Mark Berman, from Columbus, Ohio; Orin McMonigle, author of dozens of books on insects; and Don Kovach, the local "Bee-Manager." Other fun activities will include gentle and respectful bug-catching and release, bug crafts, and a bug tattoo station. There will be snacks and a framed photo at the bug-themed photo booth available for purchase (cash only).

Hands On! The Sculpture of Michael Naranjo opens tomorrow at The Butler Institute of American Art! A Meet-the-Artist reception will be held from 1-3pm, and a Gallery Talk at 2pm on Sunday, July 14.

Michael Naranjo is a Native American sculptor. In 1968, after just a few months in Vietnam, Naranjo was blinded by a gr***de. While recuperating in the hospital in Japan, the wounded 23-year-old asked a volunteer for some modeling clay. He’d lost the use of his right hand; with his left, he sculpted a small figure and began his career as a sculptor.

Naranjo’s sculptures often feature the narratives of his childhood: native dances, eagles and buffalo, women carrying water. His work is wide-ranging — he sculpts mythical creatures, such as mermaids and centaurs, as well as cherubs and nudes. The forms he creates are simple and bold, but the surfaces have a varied texture that viewers are encouraged to touch. For over 40 years, Naranjo has sculpted stories from clay, using his left hand and no tools. The exhibition will be on display until September 22, 2024.
