ORINOCO ECO CAMP
The camp has 15 waterfront cabins located deep into the Orinoco Delta, making it an ideal location for your visit to the region. As the Orinoco Delta is inhabited by the Warao indigenous people, this camp is built according to their design, meaning the sleeping huts are in the middle of the jungle without walls. Guests can choose to sleep in comfortable beds or hammocks with mosqu
ito nets to get the full Warao experience and, in addition, the camp contains a dining room with an open bar on a deck over the river and public bathroom and shower facilities. A taxi service will take you from Maturin to San Jose de Buja, followed by a short boat ride through the delta to the camp, where you will be given a tour of all our facilities and have time to acquaint yourself with your new surroundings. Your visit to the Orinoco Eco Camp will directly benefit the Warao. Due to a lack of resources the Warao have in the past been forced to traffic redwood, birds and animals which has threatened the ecosystem of the jungle. The camp employs local Warao, giving them an alternative source of income which helps to restore the local ecosystem for future generations. Activity Options
Orinoco Eco Camp offers stays of one, two, three or four days. Depending on your length of stay, there are a number of different tours available. The longer you stay, the more you´ll do. Piranha Fishing
One of our experienced guides will find an ideal spot in a tucked away part of the river to try your luck at piranha fishing. Those lucky enough to snag one will have it prepared for you back at the camp for a tasty snack! Jungle Walk
An Indian tour guide will lead you on a walk through the dense jungle of the Orinoco Delta, and for those who have never been into the jungle before (most guests) the experience is unforgettable. The silence and tranquility is occasionally broken by singing birds and howler monkeys as you wander through a myriad of plant life. Boots are provided for all guests. Indian Family Visit
A visit to a local Warao family will give you an insight into their lifestyle and survival techniques which are not too dissimilar today to how they were hundreds of years ago. The Warao are descendants from the hunter tribes who migrated from Asia before 12000 years, across the Bering Strait glacier linking northern Asia and Canada. The tribes then branched out separately to places as far as Greenland, while others ventured south through the Americas and settled in what is today Venezuela. There is an estimated 40,000 Warao Indians in the region today, mostly living along the banks of the delta. For more information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indigenous_peoples_of_the_Americas
Visiting some of the families, you will have the chance to buy authentic Warao crafts and jewelry. Any purchases will directly benefit the families and help sustain their way of life. Canoe Trip
Warao means ‘People of the Canoe´ so there is no better way to tour the delta. An Indian guide will take you where larger boats can´t as you drift down the smaller rivers. Venturing deep into the jungle will give you a rare glimpse at the delta´s local fauna such as exotic birds, fresh water dolphins, butterflies and howler and capuchin monkeys. Buffalo Farm
An evening visit to a local farm will give a view of the contrasting landscape of the delta where the rainforest meets the swamp and makes for a spectacular view of the sunset. The farm is home to numerous animals and horse back riding is an option. Night Safari
An additional option for all guests is a night canoe trip to search for caimans and snakes, held either before or after dinner depending on the rivers water level. Breakfast, lunch and dinner is included and is timed around the guests´ tour schedule. Everyone visiting the camp will be given ample time to relax at the camp in between trips to enjoy your surroundings and the sounds of the jungle. Drinking water, juice, tea and coffee is provided at all times, and the bar is open whenever you want it to be. For those staying for three nights you will be given the opportunity to stay one night out in the wilderness at an abandoned Warao house. You will be deep into the jungle under the stars to give you an intimate Warao experience. A minimum of four people is required. CANAIMA
Canaima is one of the most alluring destinations in South America, known for the Tepuis (Table Mountains) and was the setting for the film Jurassic Park. There are a number of water falls in the area, the most famous of them being Angel Falls. In conjunction with the Orinoco Delta, we can organize trips to Canaima to experience the awe inspiring sight of the world´s highest waterfall. A small aircraft flight will take you from Ciudad Bolivar to Canaima giving you a bird´s eye view of Gran Sabana. You are then taken to the Canaima Lagoon, the source of the four waterfalls and a breathtaking setting. A small boat will get you close enough to feel the sheer energy they produce. You will also be able to walk behind the impressive Sapo Falls where you can cool down and experience the power of this natural phenomenon. A trip down the Carrao River will give you a view of the flat-top Tepui Mountains, before arriving at the island of Raton where you will stay at a camp for the evening in a comfortable hammock opposite Angel Falls – the world´s highest waterfall at almost 1,000 meters high. The following morning there is a pleasant 90 minute hike to reach the base of Angel Falls. Being this close to the falls is an otherworldly experience as the water gushes down towards you, making you fully aware you are in the presence of something truly unique. Later you fly back from Canaima to Ciudad Bolivar, giving another view of some of South America´s most beautiful landscapes. If time permits there will be a short colonial tour of Ciudad Bolivar – the historical heart of Venezuela – before you fly to your next destination. All transport including flights, taxis and boats will be arranged for you, and all meals are included. It is recommended for all trips – both Orinoco Delta and Canaima – that you bring a long sleeved shirt, long trousers, flashlight and insect repellant. Additional combinations possible include
