You’ll be welcomed aboard a custom built sailing catamaran for your relaxing cruise to Buck Island National Wildlife Refuge, just three miles south of St. Thomas marine preservation boundary and is home to an antique lighthouse maintained by the US Coast Guard, Turtle Cove and the famous Cartanza Shipwreck Cove. on your snorkeling gear and you’re ready to explore! The wartime shipwreck of the Cartanza lies 45 feet below the surface. With 100ft of clear visibility, this is truly a cool sight to see. The 190-foot Merchant Marine freighter was originally used to transport goods during World War II. After the war, the ship transported products from South America up through the Caribbean Islands. Thomas, her captain and crew abandoned the Cartanza and they scuttled the ship near the mouth of St. Thomas harbor. The Army Corp of Engineers considered it to be a navigation hazard and planned to blow up the wreck. However, in 1979 local dive shops paid to move the ship to an area west of Buck Island. In the 1980s Hurricane Hugo rolled the ship up out of the water, broke it into three pieces and left it in Shipwreck Cove where it is today. Here you may see a wide variety of fish and marine life including sergeant majors, snappers, several species of parrot fish, squirrel fish, grunts, trumpet fish, jacks, blue tangs, turtles, southern stingrays, eagle rays, shrimp, eels, and assorted corals and sponges are all possible. Your marine tour guides will point out and identify the variety of sea life you’ll encounter and show you the secrets of the area. During the snorkeling experience, you are always welcome to relax on the open deck and catch some sun. Once the catamaran heads back to the pier under sail (weather permitting) you are welcome to enjoy unlimited rum punch, soda, snacks and great music and entertainment from our professional crew.
