Check mate= shah mat

The word “checkmate” has a fascinating linguistic journey tied closely to the history of chess itself.

Persian origin – “Shāh Māt” (شاه مات): Literally translates to “the king is helpless/dead”. In Persian, “Shāh” means king, and “Māt” means defeated or helpless.

Arabic adaptation – As chess spread through the Islamic world, the phrase evolved phonetically and was absorbed into Arabic. Some transliterations also shifted the meaning slightly, possibly influenced by the similarity of “Shāh” to “Sheikh.”

Old French – “eschec mat”: Chess arrived in Europe via Spain and Italy, and the phrase entered Old French as eschec mat, from which the English term eventually evolved.

English – “checkmate”: In English, “check” comes from “eschec” (meaning a check or threat to the king), and “mate” from “mat” (defeated).

Born of Persian hero

The Birth of Persian Hero Rostam as described in the 9th Century Epic Poem CE, by Ferdowsi
In the Epic Shahnameh, written by the Persian poet, Ferdowsi, Rudaba, the mother of Rostam, is described having "skin like ivory" and a face "like the moon" and a "rosy complexion".
This illustration is inspired by the birth of Rostam who is a legendary hero in Persian mythology.
Rudaba's labor of Rostam was prolonged because of the extraordinary size of her baby. She was near death when her husband decided to summon Simurgh (mythical bird). Simurgh appeared and instructed him on how to perform a Rostamzad, a Caesarean section, thus saving both Rudaba and the child.

Tháp Azadi (Tự do) không chỉ là biểu tượng của Tehran mà còn là một trong những biểu tượng nổi tiếng của Iran. Hoàn thành vào năm 1971 bởi sinh viên kiến ​​trúc Hossein Amanat, tượng đài này được xây dựng để vinh danh kỷ niệm 2.500 năm của Đế chế Ba Tư và kết hợp các yếu tố của kiến ​​trúc Hồi giáo.
