What I like most about Buddhism is that humans are not categorized by how much money we have, what we are doing for a living, or how beautiful we are. Instead, what makes us different is our stage of consciousness.

For example, people with a low level of consciousness tend to be completely controlled by their minds. In that state, the flow of thoughts comes out nonstop, it sucks all energy, and people are often exhausted and miserable. They live in a world that is an illusion created by their mind that they couldn’t get out of it, eventually, they are drained and have no motivation to live anymore.

In a higher state of consciousness, people are more conscious, they are no longer controlled by the mind. In that state, people often observe their thoughts and emotions instead of giving them too much power. Because of this, they can adjust the energy inside the body so that they often feel happy and energetic.

If people keep increasing the level of human consciousness, they will be exposed to the ultimate truth of life, their mental activities decrease such that their minds tend to be still and empty. In that state, people include themself with the cosmos and nature and everything is connected.

Buddhism encourages people to meditate and not to violate 5 precepts including killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, and intoxication. This will help us to gain more wisdom and one day lead us to the ultimate truth of life

I personally believe our human consciousness will go through different stages.
First, we seek outside and explore the physical world to gain more knowledge and function well in society.

Second, we turn inward and pay enormous attention to the non-physical world inside. In this stage, we turn knowledge into wisdom and we gain a deep understanding of things from the inside out.

Hoi An Ancient Town is a perfect place to visit and study if you are a culture lover and you want to know more about the local spirit here, the thing that makes Hoi An special and unique.

"What people build is the reflection of what is in their minds"

That's why visiting traditional and historical places basically means we are in an indirect conversation with people in the past. Understanding this will help us to pay more attention, then we can learn more about history and traditional values.

Let's touch the soul of Hoi An with Bao!

Thank you Sonya for giving me a chance to show you and your kids Hoi An history and culture.

The Yoti 14-year-old boy's knowledge of history, religion, and philosophy is incredible. I hope I and him will have more conversations about these topics in the future.

What I like the most is the kid's interpretation of the Taoist story that I told at the end. It is amazing to see their opinion about culture and traditional values.

When I ask Ariella the question:

"Why the physical temple is gone, but the spirit and belief are still there"?

And she said: " because it is deep inside our hearts"

That answer touched me a lot and I couldn't describe how I felt.

Thank you for the lovely morning.

I and Hoianese Hotel are trying our best to bring out the beauty of the culture to everyone who pays a visit to Hoi An.

The tour is like a mini-workshop in which we've put a lot of time and effort in order to show people how much we care and love the cultural value.

We've chosen Hoi An as a place to work and settle down just simply because Hoi An is like a living museum for us where all of the traditional beauty manifested vividly throughout many ancient houses and temples.

Thank you Ali, this review means and inspires me a lot. I'm so happy to share with you and others the hidden beauty of Hoi An. It takes time and requires me to completely silence my mind and feel with my whole heart.

Thank you James for your recommendation for both Cycling Tour & Hoi An Walking Tour With Bao.

You are one of the very few people who have done 2 of my trips and I'm glad you enjoyed them.

If Walking Tour is basically my love for the traditional culture, then Hoi An Cycling Tour is my appreciation of the farmers in Vietnam.

I do both just because of 1 principle key: Let's bring back the beauty of the tradition and Let the farmers speak"

Once again, thank you for your love!

While traveling around the world, you may see China Town almost everywhere and wherever they go and settle down, they are most likely to dominate the local economy or play an important role in the economical system. I do assume personally that it is not coincident, it must be rooted in the culture. The question is " Which is the best way to get to know more about Chinese culture?"

And the answer is to visit Chinese religious buildings such as temples or assembly halls because it is the manifestation of their minds and contains so many philosophies.

Thank you Inna and Ilya for joining Hoi An Walking Tour with me. It was such a great honor for me to show you the true value of Hoi An. I had a lot of amazing memories with both of you.

When it came to the end of the tour, I was saying:
" I've been spending a lot of time studying Vietnamese culture and tradition, I've noticed that not everything from the past is good, and not everything at the present is bad. If we can keep the good things from the PAST and combine them with the great things in the PRESENT, we can create a better FUTURE. However, I've noticed that many young people tend to forget cultural values. This is one of the reasons I do the Walking Tour, bring out the beauty of the tradition to people".
Then you taught me an English idiom that I never forget which helps me to explain better and clearer: " Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater".

I'd love to say thank you to Julia as well for trusting me and arranging the tour for your parents.

Much Love!

While in Hoi An, you will have a chance to visit Phung Hung Ancient House which is preserved almost intact, becoming one of the most tourist attractions in Hoi An.

Phung Hung Vietnamese Ancient House is located at 4 Nguyen Thi Minh Khai street, in the old town, near the Japanese bridge. The house was built by a Vietnamese merchant in 1780, during the flourishing period of the port town of Hoi An. He named the house Phung Hung - also a merchant's name, which means "prosperous" with the wish that the family business prosper.
In the past, this was a shop selling a bunch of products such as cinnamon, pepper, salt, silk, porcelain, and glass. The current owner is an 8th-generation descendant, living and protecting the old house.

Visiting Phung Hung Vietnamese Ancient House will help us know more about Vietnamese traditional architecture as well as the influence of Chinese and Japanese architecture on the houses in Hoi An.

If yellow is the symbolic color and the Japanese Bridge is the symbolic culture of Hoi An, then to me, Thu Bon river is the one that gave birth to Hoi An today - "Mother River".

If you have a chance to visit Hoi An, don't hesitate to take a bicycle to cycle around some islands outside the city center where you can see and get to know more about local people's lives. The Thu Bon River has given the farmers and fishermen here everything they need including rich alluvia soil, abundant water, and endless sea animals.

In the 16th century, The Thu Bon played an important role in forming Hoi An international trading port, known as Faifoo, later became one of the biggest international ports in Southeast Asia. People from all over the world followed the Thu Bon River and came to Hoi An for trading.

Because of the huge value brought to local people, The sacred Thu Bon river is worshipped in many places in Quang Nam province.

Thank you Teirra for such meaningful and inspiring words you have for me. At the beginning of the tour. I was a little bit nervous as this is the biggest private group from Airbnb that I have ever led. But everything changed immediately when I met all of you, a happy and beautiful family who has given me a lot of warm welcomes as well as vibrant energy that I could clearly feel throughout my body.

In addition, the more I share about Vietnamese culture, the more I feel connected with all of you. I was so impressed by your kindness and sweetness, the eagerness to learn about the Vietnamese culture and Hoian history of your Mother-in-law, and the support and love of everybody in the family.

I could not say thank you enough. Please take care everyone and I hope I can see all of you soon again one day. Thank you for everything!

It is no coincidence that the Japanese bridge is chosen as the symbol of Hoi An. Although it is a small bridge, the Japanese bridge contains great value.

The bridge was built by the Japanese in the late 16th century, and early 17th century, and now is more than 400 years old. Hoi An was once known as one of the biggest trading ports in Southeast Asia and has attracted many merchants from all over the world, including the Japanese.

For some reason, the relationship between Vietnam (Cochinchina) and Japan at that time was very close. Lord Nguyen married his adopted daughter, Princess Cong Nu Ngoc Hoa, to a Japanese merchant, assigned land for Japanese merchants to live in, and even let a Japanese man manage the trading in Hoi An port.

Around 1633, when the Japanese implemented a policy called Sakoku ( closed all borders to prevent Western influence), all Japanese people left Hoi An, and the Japanese Bridge was the only construction left by the Japanese in Hoi An.

The Covered Bridge is chosen as the symbol of Hoi An and also the symbol of the peaceful relationship between Vietnam and Japan.

Besides the diplomatic value, this small bridge also has other great architectural and spiritual values.

21/12/2022

One of the most important things in Vietnamese culture is ancestor worshipping and it is proven throughout entire history. No matter which religion and belief one is following, almost every single family has an ancestor altar which is placed at the most prominent position in the house.

If you ask people who are in my parent's generation what is their day of birth, they probably don't remember, but if you ask them what is the day of death of their grand- grand-grandparent for 5,7 or even 10 generations, they remember deeply in their heart and mind because it is very important to them.

According to Vietnamese traditional belief, after people die, the soul will leave the body and travel to the land of the dead and sometimes come back and communicate with living people through dreams.

The immortal soul and life after death are the main reasons why worshipping is crucial in Vietnamese culture.

Daoism is always considered a philosophy rather than a religion because of the huge wisdom about life. The core idea of Daoism is to advise people to live in harmony with nature. Once you find out and follow the "Dao", everything you do becomes effortless.

The Dao that can be told is not the eternal Dao.
The Dao that can be named is not the eternal Name.

We can't use words to describe the "Dao". It is beyond our intellect and only experienced.

Unfortunately, the trend in social development and the increase in the number of people on Earth is pushing humans far away from living in harmony with nature. As a result, we- humans have immense suffering.

Thank you Rosie for taking your time and leaving the very first review on Airbnb. I had a wonderful morning with you. I was truly inspired by the compassion you have toward animals. What impressed me the most about you is your calmness and your inner peace, which I have rarely seen, especially among young people. Your life philosophy is simple, and yet beautiful. You don't need anything to be happy, indeed you just need to be yourself. Thank you for sharing with me a lot about your yoga experience and your mindful eating practice. I have learned a lot from you and I wish you have a great time in Hoi An and Vietnam.

Why do people pray to GOD?

This is a small temple dedicated to worshiping the GOD in Daoism which is believed to protect the Chinese people in Hoi An from natural disasters.

Not only one, but Hoi An has so many temples like this. I wonder myself this question:
"God doesn't help people to protect themselves from typhoons, storms, and floods. Why did ancient people just keep building temples and worshipping God? It doesn't make sense to me. Is it outdated and superstitious?"

2 months ago, there was a big natural phenomenon happened, and at that very moment. I found the answer and actually it blew my mind.

Do you want to find out? and What is your opinion? Please share your thought in the comment sections.

One of the particular thing that I myself have wanted to do is to light up and spread out the spirituality to as many people as I can by showing you around Hoi An Ancient Town.

In the next 5 to 10 years, I have a strong sense of prediction that more and more people will look inside themselves to find peace rather than seeking outside.

Buddhism, Daoism, and Confucianism are 3 big religions that has shaped the East Asian Culture.

Buddhism mainly focuses on the relationship between you and yourself. Once you understand yourself and find out that connection, you are most likely to liberate yourself from suffering.

Daoism is on the other hand, focuses on the relationship between human and nature. Once you are in harmony with nature, you will find out the "Dao". Following the "Dao (Way)" will help you do things effortlessly without even trying.

Finally Confucianism advises you how to treat other people in a certain society.

Hoi An has been more than 400 years and almost remained intact. To culture lovers, Hoi An is considered the cultural museum because it has a huge collection of the lively manifestations of 3 big intertwined religions: Buddhism, Daoism, and Confucianism.

Joining Hoi An Walking Tour with Bao, you will know and understand more.

13/11/2022

When Buddha turned 29, He couldn’t stand staying in the palace with a life full of pleasure anymore. The fire of spirituality inside him was so big that he could not hold it any longer. He decided to leave everything behind to become a sage. His journey of seeking the path for liberation began.
At that time, there were hundreds of schools training people. Buddha himself tried all of them but he was not satisfied as he had not found the way to liberation yet.
He had 6 years following asceticism. He tortured himself to the core with an absolute determination that one day he would find the path to liberation.
He thought to himself “ as long as his body is still subject to desires for food, sleep, and rest. Then it is almost likely to imprison him for liberation.
After a long period of strict fasting and self-abusing, he is weak nearly to death. However, this does not bring him any closer to enlightenment. This got him thinking that he is going the wrong way.
One day, he heard the sound coming from someone who was playing an instrument. He reflected, “ If the string is too loose or too tight, the instrument never makes a good sound. It is like we should not have a too self-indulgent life nor a too self-denial life to seek enlightenment. It should be the middle way.“

Since then he changed the way to practice and then soon he got enlightenment under the bodhi tree.

How was Hoi An Walking Tour created?

Since 2018, I have been asking myself these questions "What is emotion? Should I control my emotions?" because I realized that emotions had a great impact on my life. I even posted those innocent questions on social media.

I started looking for answers on the internet, and then fate led me to learn about religions in the world. Gradually, I was immersed in that religious space without being aware of. I just knew that I could sit and read and learn all day.

Then in 2019, Covid happened, I had more time to look deeper inside myself. Then that magical moment came, my body felt a huge energy coming from nowhere, it was so big that my tears flow continuously. Since then, my life has changed a lot. One thing I realize most clearly is that I have become more "stupid". My logical mind has gradually lost the function to make plans, manage time, and all social skills have almost disappeared. Instead, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of what's going on inside of myself and others.

Thanks to these discoveries about the inner world. I have understood a lot more about the Vietnamese tradition, religion, and especially spirituality.

Hoi An Walking Tour was finally born as an inevitable result. It is just my personal spiritual experience and love toward Hoi An Ancient Town.

Welcome to Hoi An. I’m Bao, a Hoi An local tour guide. As a culture lover myself, I love to visit, explore, and study history, people, and customs everywhere I go. Hoi An Ancient Town is the place where I decided to settle down and stay for the rest of my life because of the huge value this little town brought to me. I'm fascinated by the old wooden Vietnamese traditional houses; the story about the trading relationship between Japan and Vietnam in the past and the legacy that the Japanese had left in Hoi An; the significant influence of Chinese philosophy and religion on Vietnam.

It's not an exaggeration to say that Hoi An is a living museum reflecting Vietnamese culture and beliefs.

Sadly, since not everyone recognizes the true value of this little town, I’ve put a lot of time and effort into studying it and bringing it out to people. And this really makes me happy.

Learning and sharing the Vietnamese culture with people from all over the world has become my biggest passion and mission in life. It is my honor to accompany you while you are in Hoi An.

When you join me, it’s not really a tour, it’s a casual conversation filled with historical and religious stories from a friendly and smiley guy who has spent years and years studying about this lovely town.
