MUST-DO THINGS while in VENICE, ITALY
❤️ Take photos at the Rialto Bridge.
This is the iconic bridge you might have seen in many pictures of Venice. When you see it for the first time in person, you can’t help but be a little awe-struck.
It sits over the Grand Canal and is an extremely busy tourist spot. It will be quite hard to get a good picture especially during the day. That’s why I preferred to visit it at night. It looks even more beautiful in the dark. Also, at night-time the crowds thin-out and it’s very easy to get some really good photos.
In my opinion a trip to Venice would not be complete without visiting this site. It’s a beautiful spot to capture pictures. Remember to photograph from both sides of the bridge.
❤️ Take a Gondola Ride.
People ask me if a Gondola ride is worth it. I would say it depends. If you want the experience or if it has been a childhood dream of yours, like me, then of course it’s worth it. But if you are happy to just take pictures with it in the background and are satisfied with viewing the city on foot, then you can give it a miss as you can easily get the essence of Venice walking in the narrow streets. There is nothing new you will see on the Gondola ride.
I did it just for the experience and for fulfilling a dream of mine. And although it was a very short ride (I paid for 30 minutes and only got about 20 minutes), I still enjoyed the experience.
Let me point it out: It is not at all romantic as you may expect having seen it in movies or pictures. There are so many tourists around having Gondola rides so go only for the experience and not because you think it will be romantic.
Despite all of these factors, I must admit I really enjoyed the ride and wouldn’t mind doing it again. It was a very unique feeling gliding through tiny little canals surrounded by old houses on both sides. The experience of looking at Venice from the water is pretty great.
❤️ Try to get lost in Venice.
I heard this from someone that I should try to get lost in Venice. Understandably the idea behind it was to go off the beaten path and really discover the place. And then trying to find your way back would add to the “fun” of the experience.
I did the first part with ease. I wandered through narrow streets and squares. It was really exciting to discover places which I would have otherwise missed seeing as they were not hot-tourist spots.
But however hard I tried I could not achieve the second part. The getting lost one. And believe me I tried. Many times. Maybe I have a remarkable sense of direction. I always found my way back too easily. Have you tried doing this? Comment below. 😃
❤️ Visit the other islands.
On your trip to Venice, make sure to set aside a day for a visit to the nearby islands. It’s so worth it. I visited two islands......Burano and Murano.
Visiting them is very easy as you can do it without the help of a guided tour. Regular water buses operate from Venice to these islands.
Murano is renowned for its long tradition of glass-making. That is the reason you will many cute glass shops here.
Burano on the other hand is very popular for its brightly coloured houses. They look so petty. Legend has it that they were painted with bright colours for the sake of fishermen so that they could easily find their houses in thick fog.
There are plenty of little cafes and restaurants here. I loved both these islands especially the vibrant houses of Burano. These islands also give a much peaceful experience as they are away from the hordes of tourists of Venice. Just leisurely strolling through these charming islands and taking photos of beautiful bridges, canals and houses was one of my best memories of this trip.
❤️ Browse for souvenirs.
There are a TONS of souvenir shops in Venice and it’s nice to spend some time browsing them even if you don’t plan to do a lot of shopping.
There is so much variety to choose from. You will find shops selling a range of things from Masks, Jewellery, Glass to Leather goods, fridge magnets, gondola souvenirs etc. Whatever your budget, you can find something nice to take home as memorabilia of your happy times here.
❤️ Wander the streets at night.
Ok so this might sound odd, but I loved walking in the Venetian streets at night. I’m talking 1 am. There used to be many people around even at this hour therefore I felt completely safe wandering through the streets. It was much calmer as compared to the day, so it had a more relaxed atmosphere. I found the Rialto Bridge to also be much less crowded in the night which gave me ample opportunity to photograph it.
❤️ Visit the Saint Mark’s Square: (Piazza San Marco)
This is the largest square in Venice.
It’s a very crowded tourist attraction but still I loved being here. The popular St. Mark’s Basilica and the very iconic bell tower stand in this place. The other dominant building here is the Doge’s Palace.
All the buildings are very pretty. You need to stand in the middle of this square to really get the feel of the wonderful architecture around you. It’s a very lively and happy place (at least that’s the way I felt being here). Full of activity, iconic buildings and cheerful tourists.
It’s a great place to spend a few hours. There are quite a lot of restaurants, cafes and shops here which are nice but expensive (as is the case near any main tourist attraction).
❤️ Take tons of pictures on the pretty little bridges.
As Venice is a city of canals and bridges so you are bound to find many cute bridges on your walks. They are very picturesque and posing on them will make for great photos. So be sure to stop on a few and click away!
