PHONG NHA - KE BANG NATIONAL PARK, A LAND OF CAVES

Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park is located at Phong Nha, Bo Trach District, Quang Binh Province, in the central region of Vietnam. Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park comprises an area of 123,000 hectares and has been on The World Heritage List in 2003 with a criterion of significant geodiversity and geomorphic features and in 2015 with two criteria of a significant ecosystem and a high level of biodiversity. There are 404 caves with a total length of 220 kilometers and an underground river system in the park, making it one of the most outstanding limestone karst ecosystems in the world according to phongnhakebang.vn.

The most popular caves in Phong Nha - Ke Bang (which are) open to visitors are Son Doong Cave, Phong Nha Cave, Paradise Cave, Tien Son Cave, Hang En Cave, Hang Va Cave, Dark Cave, and Tu Lan Cave System.

Son Doong cave was recognized as the largest cave in the world by The World Guinness Organization and selected as one of the most beautiful on the globe by BBC news. The main passage in Son Doong is more than 5 kilometers long, 200 meters high and 150 meters wide. With these dimensions, Son Doong overtook Deer Cave in Malaysia in 2009 to take the title of the world's largest cave according to Vietnamnet. The cave was found by Ho Khanh, a local Vietnamese, in 1991 and was discovered in 2009 by the British Royal Cave Association. Son Doong has been open to the public since 2013 with a limited number of visitors every year. Therefore, customers should make reservations at least six to twelve months in advance. All cave lovers wish to explore Son Doong at least once in their lifetime. I myself wish to explore the cave before turning 50 years old.

In March 2020, I visited Phong Nha - Ke Bang for the first time. I explored Phong Nha Cave, Paradise Cave, a part of Tu Lan Cave System and The National Park. Phong Nha cave is also called the Water Cave and is 7,729 kilometers long. Phong Nha is widely known as the only cave in Vietnam which reaches the 7 criteria of The British Royal Cave Association according to Phongnhakebang.vn:
1. Cave with the most beautiful underground river;
2. Cave with a high and wide entrance;
3. Cave with sandy beaches, and beautiful reefs;
4. Cave with a beautiful underground lake;
5. Cave with a large and beautiful dry cave;
6. Cave with the most beautiful and magnificent stalactites;
7. Cave with the longest water cave.

I took a 1.5-kilometer Phong Nha Cave adventure tour, which is open to tourists. That was the most exciting cave adventure ever in my life. First, we went kayaking to go inside the cave in the dark, then climbed over the rocks to see amazing huge stalactites closely and a beautiful lake. After that, we swam and went through the lake to a sandbank. Applying mud which remained on the rock after the water level went down on your face and body, then burying yourself in the sand and looking at the beautiful cave ceiling with amazing stalactites was a remarkable memory. I thought that I was in a movie scene at that moment.

The second cave I explored during this trip was Tien cave which is in the Tu Lan cave system. You can buy a one-day, two-day, three-day or four-day tour to explore this area, depending on your time and health. I got a one-day tour. We walked through a field for about two hours, crossed a stream, passed by a beautiful small lake with green and clear water and hiked up rocks to reach the cave. We had lunch with local food by a small river. It’s a very nice experience. If you like camping, you should take the overnight tour.

The last cave I visited was Paradise cave which is also called the Dry Cave. Paradise is the longest dry cave in Asia with a length of 31km, an average width of 30-100m (the widest spot is up to 150m) and a height of 60-80m. The specialists of the British Royal Cave Association exclaimed “Heaven” when they first explored the cave so it was named Paradise Cave after that. There are huge, gorgeous and magical stalactites with different and unique forms which stir your imagination. I could only say “Wow”, “OMG” from the surprises I got during my first kilometer of the cave exploration. Heaven is for real here. It is true when many tourists say “If you have seen the stalactites in Paradise cave, you don’t want to visit any other caves to see them”. I was tired after visiting Phong Nha cave and Tien cave so I regretted that I couldn’t take the 7-kilometre tour of Paradise Cave. I wish I can come back to explore Paradise more as soon as possible.

Besides the amazing caves, I also visited Phong Nha Botanical Garden which is an area of 40 hectares. The garden is a good place to see wildlife, plants and nature preserved. It’s wonderful to walk in the park and see many species of wildlife, flowers, plants and trees which have lived 500-600 hundred years, as well as a waterfall and a lake. In addition, riding a motorbike around Phong Nha - Ke Bang to see natural landscapes is also an exciting experience.

Furthermore, Phong Nha - Ke Bang is a popular destination in Vietnam, therefore, it’s easy to find good hotels and restaurants with delicious food. Don’t forget to enjoy the fresh seafood in D**g Hoi city which is a 45-kilometre drive from Phong Nha on the way you go to D**g Hoi Airport. I really love the shrimp there. Phong Nha - Ke Bang trip is one of my favorite trips in Vietnam so far.

Melbourne city is one of my favorite cities in the world. I love Melbourne’s landscapes with public gardens, beaches, old European buildings, bridges, new buildings and high-rises. It’s wonderful walking along the Yarra River during sunset and seeing the buildings reflect off the mirrored water. I hunt the sunset reflections at different spots, looking for the most beautiful Melbourne city view. I took this amazing sunset in May 2018. I had the pleasure of sharing this image capture with my husband, step-son and two of my friends visiting from Vietnam. The photo is just gorgeous. For many reasons it’s one of my most favourite photos in Melbourne.

LANG SON, A BEAUTIFUL MOUNTAINOUS DESTINATION

Lang Son is a mountainous province in the Northeast of Vietnam, right next to the border with China. Lang Son is a 3-hour drive from Hanoi (154km). Lang Son is a popular destination for spiritual tourism. There are many cultural festivals around the year such as Tien Pagoda Festival, Tam Thanh Festival, Ky Cung Temple Festival, Na Nhem Festival, etc. Na Nhem Festival is very unique, which is organized on the full moon date in the first month of the lunar calendar every year in Bac Son district. There is a procession to offer linga and moon face to the King. Meanwhile, The linga presents men and the moon face presents women. They believe that this procession will bring good luck to everyone in giving birth to their children. The linga is made of wood with a length of 100 cm and weight of 60kg. There are also other spiritual activities in the festival like offering food to ancestors and swordsmanship shows.

Lang Son also has many historic sites , for example , House of Mac (or Mac Dynasty) citadel, To Thi mountain, Ai Chi Lang, Tam Thanh cave, and Nhi Thanh cave, etc. The House of Mạc ruled the whole Đại Việt between 1527 and 1540 and the northern part of the country from 1540 until 1592 according to Wikipedia. Meanwhile, Ai Chi Lang is a beautiful valley with treacherous mountain passages, which was used to stop the invasion of the Tong Dynasty of China in 1077.

In addition, Lang Son has beautiful natural landscapes such as Mau Son Mountain, Bac Son Valley and Lang Son City. Mau Son is located at an altitude of 1500m above sea level, which has ice and snow in the winter, attracting a lot of travelers. Bac Son Valley is a beautiful valley with a nice village, mountains and rice fields. It is worth climbing up the mountains to see the view of stretching rice fields and the village, which attracts many photographers and visitors. Meanwhile, Lang Son city is a small, nice and clean city with a river and mountains.

Furthermore, Lang Son is famous for shopping and good food. You can buy cheap stuff at Tan Thanh market at the border gate, or at Ky Lua market and D**g Kinh market in the city. Lang Son’s cuisine is diverse, with some of famous food being roasted pork, BBQ duck, Cao Sang, Khau Nhuc, Pho Chua, and Coong Phu. Roasted pork and duck in Lang Son are very unique because they use the local Mac Mat leaves to marinate the pork and duck which makes them taste more delicious. Mr Nguyen Xuan P**c, Vietnam’s President, said that visitors should buy and take home at least a roasted duck as a gift from their Lang Son trip.

DANANG, A WORTHWHILE DESTINATION

Danang is a beach city in the Middle Region of Vietnam. Danang has the beautiful Han River which runs across the city with several bridges, mountains, wildlife and nature preserve, which has attracted many domestic and foreign tourists. Danang has carried out a campaign of “Five No and Three Yes” to become a worth-living city in Vietnam. In 2000, they started the “Five No” program: no hunger and no illiteracy, no beggars, no drug addicts in the community, and no robbery homicide. After this program succeeded, in 2005 they started the program of “Three Yes” to dwelling-house, civilization, and job. Danang people are very nice and hospitable to visitors. Danang city is also very clean. Visitors can feel safe and comfortable to explore Danang. Therefore, Danang has become a worthwhile and popular destination in Vietnam. Top things you should do in Danang are to:

1. Visit Son Tra peninsula where there are breathtaking scenery, unspoiled nature beauty and wildlife with 300 species including 15 uncommon species , for example , red-face monkey, yellow monkey, muntjac, musk-deer and wild pig.
2. Sunbathe on My Khe beach
3. Climb up Ngu Hanh Son mountain (The five mountains are named according to the five essential elements of Eastern culture: water, wood, fire, metal and earth)
4. Visit tourist attractions like the Love Bridge and the Dragon Bridge where you can watch the fire show at night.
5. Eat fresh seafood and local food such as Mi Quang (Noodle) and Cha Bo (Beef loaf)
6. Have a cocktail at rooftop bars where you can enjoy the city view with beautiful bridges across the river at night.
7. Explore Ba Na Hills Resort which is located in Truong Son Mountains, west of Danang city at an attitude 1,487m above sea level and over 20 km from Danang city centre. Ba Na Hills is famous with beautiful landscape and tourist attractions such as a world-record cable car, the Golden Bridge, the theme park and the French village. The weather is cool in the summer just like the weather in Da Lat.

When you plan your trip to Danang, don’t forget to add Hoi An Ancient Town and My Son Sanctuary , which are UNESCO world cultural heritages, to your itinerary.

Hoi An Ancient Town is well-known as a well-preserved trading port of Southeast Asia from 15th to 19th centuries. Hoi An Ancient Town is located on the north bank near the mouth of the Thu Bon River, which is about 40 minute drive from Danang City. The town reflects a fusion of indigenous and foreign cultures (principally Chinese and Japanese with later European influences). The town has architectural monuments, commercial and domestic vernacular structures, especially an open market and a ferry quay, and religious buildings such as pagodas and family cultural houses which were made with timber frame, with brick or wooden walls. The town buildings are outstanding with walls painted in yellow and black roofs. Taking a walk around the town, then stopping by a café, especially a roof top café, or a restaurant are amazing ways to experience Hoi An. Don’t forget to try the local food like chicken rice and Cao Lau. Hoi An is also a good place for wedding, portrait, street-life or landscape photography.

Meanwhile, My Son Sanctuary is located in the mountainous border of Duy Xuyen District of Quang Nam Province. My Son is 70km from Danang city and 45km from Hoi An ancient town. My Son Sanctuary was constructed between the 4th and the 13th centuries. Temple towers in My Son were built initially for Hindu divinities and later a place of worship of the Champa Kingdom. It is a worthwhile place to see the Hindu and Cham architecture and study the history of Southeast Asia.

Even though Danang has beautiful nature, there is a lack of entertainment at night or theme parks in the centre of the city. Furthermore, Ba Na Hills Resort and Hoi An Ancient Town are crowded.
