Tanna Island is preparing for an exciting athletic competition, the Yasur Run, set to take place on the 22nd of this month.
The one-day event, to be held at Port Resolution in the east of the island, will bring together 60 participants eager to showcase their endurance and speed.
Organized by the East Tanna Community and the Tafea Tourism Council, the event has garnered support from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the Japanese Sports Council, and the Vanuatu Department of Tourism. Other key supporters include the Vanuatu Tourism Office, Vanuatu Skills Partnership, and NAOIA, an organization dedicated to helping communities run events autonomously.
The primary goals of the Yasur Run are to identify talented athletes while simultaneously promoting local tourism by highlighting Tanna’s unique attractions, such as Mount Yasur, beautiful accommodations, and adventure tours.
The competition will feature a challenging 35km relay race. Runners will cover an 18km stretch from Port Resolution to the ash plain, followed by a demanding 17km segment from the plains to the summit of Mount Yasur.
Winners will be awarded prizes ranging from VT30,000 for first place, VT20,000 for second, and VT10,000 for third place.
Chairman of the Tafea Tourism Council, Daniel Samson, described the event as a milestone for the island, emphasizing its dual purpose of identifying emerging athletic talent and boosting the local tourism industry.
“This will be a very exciting and inclusive tournament, as both disabled and able-bodied athletes will be part of the event,” he said.
The Yasur Run will also serve as a preparatory event for a major race scheduled for October, which is expected to attract international participants and further elevate the island’s presence on the global sports tourism map.Stay tuned for the international event coming on 11th October 2025!!
