Update: Alice has been adopted!

Alice (A531091) is an approximately 3 year old Border Collie mix. She came into our care as a stray so not much is known about her history. Alice is very shy and unsure in her kennel, so if you’re serious about meeting her, ask for an interaction with her. She opens right up once she leaves her kennel! Alice has quickly become a volunteer favorite! Read what one volunteer had to say about her:

“Alice is very timid in her kennel so she doesn't get off her bed or approach the door for attention or treats. Once you get her out of the kennel, she opens up and is very friendly. She's a silly loving girl outside and got playful when meeting another female dog. And how about those piercing blue eyes?! And she's a nice smaller size...but not suitable for couch potatoes! This girl will need to stay active in her forever home!“

If interested in meeting Alice, please visit us during business hours — 10am-6pm Tues-Fri and 10am-4pm Saturday. No appointments or holds. We are first come, first serve.

It's with great sadness that we share the passing of Godiva. She has been with us all 10 years and played with and taught almost every one of the hundreds of puppies we've loved. The pack will certainly miss her. 🥺

A federal judge ordered thousands of dogs to be rehomed from a Virginia research facility after several inspections revealed poor conditions. Animal rescue groups are working to do just that.

UPDATE: Adopted!

🐶 ADOPT JOKER 🐶

Sweet Joker (A524355) is a 13 year old female Hound mix. She has the perfect amount of pep in her step! Enough to go for a leisurely stroll around the neighborhood, and then come back home to a comfy bed and AC.

In her kennel, she is quiet and can usually be found napping. She waits patiently for her turn to go outside and is all wags when she sees the leash. Joker would fit in nicely with a variety of different homes as she’s low-energy, friendly and super easy to walk on leash.

Adoption fees are waived for all adoptable pets over the age of seven. If interested in Joker, please contact us at 301-780-7201 to schedule an appointment. We’re closed today, but will be answering phones from 11am-6pm tomorrow.

Meet Tobey, our WTOP News pet of the week!

One-year-old Tobey is young, handsome and has eyes that will melt your heart. Tobey is a bit shy, but he's slowly building his confidence and will love you endlessly if you let him. Tobey has met other dogs and he appreciates slow introductions but once he feels comfortable, he can give the cutest play bows. He has also lived with cats and is very gentle with them.

Since coming to HRA, he’s been working on his basic manners and is making great progress. He’s a smart pup who would do well with lots of continued mental and physical enrichment.

With summer finally here and dozens of dogs in our shelter looking for a home, now is the perfect time to find your new best friend during our June pay what you can adoption event for dogs like Tobey, who are 30 pounds and over!

Dogs can sniff out disease and analyze new odors even as they exhale. But how?

A great reminder when bringing a newly adopted dog into the home - the 3/3/3 rule. It takes time for them to feel comfortable and adjust to their new home, family, routine, life.

Be patient, kind and give them time 💕

We're sad to say we recently loss 2 of our favorite forever pack members.

Teena made us work for her love, but quickly grew to find a pup family she'd never had.

Fitz aka Bubba was a gentle giant who played papa to many of our pups.

We loved them both dearly, sending love to their families!
