Follow Gary on episode 4 of Gary Barlow’s Wine Tour: South Africa today at 2pm on ITV as he leaves the Western Cape of South Africa and heads north…on safari! He is joined by seasoned traveller, presenter and fellow singer Jane McDonald as they touch down in Skukuza in the Kruger National Park. After an undignified race to bag the best room in their remarkable hotel, Gary and Jane head straight out on a spectacular safari.

They are then treated to a local breakfast favourite prepared by the resident head chef and accompanied by a local choir! Next, it’s high tea and South African sparkling wine, before a sunset safari rounded off with cocktails and a magical experience with a family of elephants. The experience is rounded off with Gary learning about some lesser-known South African wine varietals with the hotel manager, before a candlelit dinner in in a unique location where the local delicacy of crocodile ceviche receives mixed reviews!

Check out today’s episode of Gary Barlow’s Wine Tour: South Africa at 2pm on ITV as Gary is joined by his good friend Ben Shephard as he continues his South African wine adventure. They head straight up into the mountains to one of South Africa’s highest vineyards, Iona Wines, where they pick grapes, have a lesson in how wine is aged and are then treated to some fabulous home cooking.

Next, they’re off to one of the country’s youngest wine producers, Maanschijn, in Walker Bay, Western Cape. The boys get seriously stuck in with some very old and traditional wine making methods before sampling some of the best this young winery has to offer. They finish with a trip down the beautiful Klein River, where they try their hand at TV cookery on the boat’s very own Braai…with mixed results!

The final stop on our Zambia tour is the stunning Kafunta River Lodge, which is situated at the edge of the game-rich floodplain and beyond that, lies the Luangwa River – one of the best game viewing areas in the magical South Luangwa National Park.

Kafunta has eight luxurious safari chalets with charming thatched roofs and private viewing decks. The relaxing lounge and dining area offer stunning and undisturbed views of the plain where you can relax on the sofas near the wild mango tree, or the reclining sunbeds by the infinity pool. Tucked away at the foot of a giant fig tree, the intimate Spa offers a variety of massages and treatments which is a great addition to your safari experience.

We enjoyed some sumptuous candlelit meals under the vast African sky, accompanied by hippos wallowing in the waterhole. Your safari here never really ends!

As you ease into the good life at Shawa Luangwa Camp you get unbeatable access to the wildest parts of South Luanga. This small, eco-friendly bush camp overlooking the Luangwa River in the Nsefu Sector is made up of five luxury tents which open entirely on three sides to offer an unblocked 270-degree view over the river and across the park where you can watch elephants come to quench their thirst at the river, all from the comfort of your bed or private wooden deck.

Our game drives here were just incredible! Shawa Luanga is the only safari operator offering Silent Safaris in Luangwa, Electric Land Cruisers are powered by Zambia’s abundant sunshine which means the expert guides can traverse the park quietly, lightly, and with a minimal carbon footprint as well as getting closer to the wildlife without disturbing them.

One of the best experiences here are the meals in the bush. The Shawa team know all the best spots for eating out in the wild where you get to enjoy breakfast or lunch while extending your safari-viewing pleasure.

Situated deep in the South Luanga National Park on the ephemeral Luwi River, we have arrived at the charming and luxurious colonial-style Luwi Camp which is so remote, there are no other camps for miles around. Tranquillity envelops this camp, creating a haven that allows you to be fully immersed in the bush. As you can see my favourite moments include relaxing with a G&T, watching the wildlife from my bed and delicious Zambian-inspired meals in the wild.

Its four safari tents are nestled under a grove of ancient mahogany trees overlooking a floodplain that attracts hippos and elephants. Nearby, a wildlife hide overlooks a lively oxbow lagoon.
