Locating a Roof Leak
When it comes to leaking roofs, many homeowners are looking for leaks in all the wrong places. You no longer have to be one of them. The first and perhaps most obvious place to look for a roof leak is directly above the leak in a ceiling or exterior wall. Use a flashlight to inspect the attic floor over the leak while it's raining. If you see standing water, water stains, mold, wet insulation or other exposed insulation, you've found what you've been looking for.

Common Sources of Roof Leaks
Every time it rains, your roof is under attack from liquid invaders from the sky, seeking to breech your home's defenses and steal your right to be warm and dry (well, that's one way of looking at it). Rainwater is quick to exploit any weakness in the integrity of your roofing defense system. Roofing materials can wear out, break, rust, blow off, or otherwise fail and give moisture the opening it needs to do its damage. Most commonly rainwater finds its way through the roof by way of a chimney, plumbing vent, exhaust fan or skylight, flashings when the sealant joints around these pe*******ons crack and fail. Look for potential chinks in your home's armor in the following areas:
• Old or defective shingles can curl and crack, allowing moisture intrusion. If old shingles aren't removed before new roof shingles are applied, it can reduce the life of the new roof.
• Chimney caps can crack allowing water inside the chimney.
• Gutter flashing can fail, forcing rainwater to set up camp between the roof and gutter.
• Flat or low pitched roofs have unique maintenance needs and are susceptible to water problems because they may not drain as quickly as roofs with a steeper pitch.
Flat roof drains or scuppers can clog and hold water on the roof, increasing the risk, not only of a leak, but of a possible collapse of the entire roof under the weight of the water. The price of dryness is eternal vigilance. Keep possible pe*******on points well sealed and maintained and you will have nothing to fear from raindrops falling on your roof. You don't need a guide to roof protection and repair to know that prevention is your best defense.

Roof Material Problem
Once rainwater breaks into your house, it can be very elusive. You may not find water directly below a pe*******on point. Keep in mind that water may travel sideways before passing through a joint in the roof sheathing, and may travel in a horizontal joint before falling on the floor or ceiling. If this happens, there may be a problem in the roofing material.

Negative Hydrostatic Pressure
Wouldn't you just know it? Just when you thought negative hydrostatic pressure described the majority of moisture v***r transmission-related flooring problems, some wise-guy expert comes along and says it ain't so. According to Mr. Know-it-All, hydrostatic pressure can cause problems for finish flooring installations only when water is at a level above the flooring surface and exerts upward pressure equal to the depth or “head” of water times its density (62.4 lbs./cu. ft.), or approximately 0.47 psi pressure per foot of water. (Yea, right.) Moisture v***r transmission (aka negative hydrostatic pressure) is nothing compared to true hydrostatic pressure. Hydrostatic pressure can often exert enough physical pressure to lift an entire concrete slab clean out of the ground!

Sealing Cracks in a Foundation
If a crack in your foundation has led to the formation of your own little Water World in your basement, you may be able to close the gap by this guide to foundation repair:
1. Excavate the area to access the crack or hole from the outside.
2. Use a pressure washer, scraper, steel brush, compressed air and/or other approaches and tools to clean the wall area in and around the leak thoroughly.
3. Use a brick or pointing trowel to pack large voids with hydraulic cement, which you can apply to a wet surface. When it dries after a few days, brush on foundation coating and backfill.

How to Caulk a Tub
Follow these simple steps to waterproofing your bathtub and becoming "caulk-of-the-walk."
1. Trim an appropriate-sized notch in the corner of the bead cleanup tool, using the graduated markings.
2. Snip the tip of the caulk tube with your utility knife. Cut the tip at an angle so that it can fit flush in the seam between wall and tub. (If you plan to use the bead head, it doesn't matter how you clip the tip.)
3. Attach the bead head, if you're using one by screwing it onto the tube tip. It will create its own threads.
4. Pop the tube into the caulking gun and pump the trigger until the caulk oozes out. Clean off any excess.
5. Start in a corner where two walls and the tub meet. Place the tip of the caulk tube into the corner. Applying a steady pressure and lay the bead in the seam until you get to the opposite wall or some other stopping point. Go slow and try to do an entire wall at once.
6. Use the bead cleanup tool to remove the excess caulk from the bead. Do this by placing the notched edge of the tool in a corner and then following the seam with the tool until the seam ends. Hold the tool so that one side touches the wall, the other the porcelain; the notched corner should be flush with the bead. The excess caulk will accumulate in the L-bend.
7. Get rid of the excess caulk, then use the damp rag to remove any caulk on the porcelain or tile surfaces. The caulk should be moist enough to wipe up easily.
8. Repeat this process for all the other interior seams. Then, if necessary, caulk the exterior seams between the floor and the top of the tub.
9. Before it dries, you can drag a wet finger across the caulk to smooth it out if it looks a little uneven.
10. Allow the caulk to cure for at least a day (preferably longer) before using the bathtub.
Congratulations, you've done it. Your bathtub is neatly caulked, and you don't have any excess caulk to fight with later on.

Tip of the week

Cleaning Grout

There's no doubt, cleaning grout can make you pout. Grout is very porous, which means liquid cleaners seep through it like excrement through a goose. So you need a lot of patience. First, spray a 50/50 solution of hydrogen peroxide and water directly on the spot. Make sure you soak it good. Let it set 15 minutes, and repeat. Note: If you are working with colored grout, ignore the preceding instructions. The peroxide, which is a bleach, will remove the color from colored grout. If you still can't get the stain out, soak a heavy-duty paper towel in peroxide and lay it over the stain. Cover the towel with plastic wrap to prevent the peroxide from drying out quickly. The towel holds the peroxide on the surface giving it time to dissolve the stain. If that doesn't work, mix a paste of straight peroxide and baking soda. Allow the bubbling to subside. Apply to the stain and let it set. Re-spray with peroxide as it dries out. Miscellaneous notes: Shaving cream also does a good job removing stains on grout. If your grout is colored test an inconspicuous spot first. Tile stores now carry a cleaner stick that resembles chalk. It is safe to use on colored grout and works wonders. Finally, once you remove the stains from the grout, seal it

Tip[ of the week:
Membrane Characteristics

The point of a waterproofing membrane is to protect a building's visual and structural integrity by keeping water where it belongs and out of where it doesn't. To do its job and achieve total "waterproofocity", a membrane has to be:

• Impermeable. The membrane must be impermeable to prevent the passage of water.
• Flexible - membranes need to withstand any normal movement that may occur in building structures.
• Durable. The membrane must be able to retain its integrity over a long period of time.
• Designable. The membrane must lend itself to design details in a building. It must be suitable for each specific application. If a membrane cannot be applied where needed because of structural details, it is useless.
• Breathable. The membrane must be able to breathe so that moisture v***rs from building interior and substrates can escape freely.
• Bondable. The membrane must be able to bond easily and readily to tiles that are fixed directly to them.
• User-friendly. The membrane must be easy to apply, relatively lightweight, non-hazardous, and environmentally safe.
• Repairable and maintainable. In exposed areas such as rooftops, the membrane should require little maintenance, and in the event of damage must be easily repairable.
• Continuous. The membrane should provide a continuous film, without areas of weakness such as overlaps, which could prove to be a potential source of water entry.
• Resistant. The membrane must withstand environmental and climatic conditions
