March 29: Nyepi – Bali’s Sacred Day of Silence
On this powerful day, the entire island of Bali comes to a complete stop — no flights, no traffic, no lights, no noise. The streets are empty, the beaches are still, and the atmosphere is one of deep introspection.

Nyepi is the Balinese New Year, a time for self-reflection, spiritual cleansing, and renewal. It’s guided by the principles of Catur Brata Penyepian:
• Amati Geni – no fire or light
• Amati Karya – no work or physical activity
• Amati Lelungan – no travel
• Amati Lelanguan – no entertainment or indulgence

While the silence may feel unusual, many find it to be one of the most peaceful, grounding experiences imaginable.

A powerful eruption of Mount Lewotobi occurred in the east of Flores Island 🌋

❗️Despite the considerable distance from Bali, a large ash cloud has caused flight cancellations and delays in Denpasar, affecting China, Singapore, Australia, Malaysia, and Thailand. If you have a flight scheduled soon, please check your flight status on the airport’s website.🙏🏼

The ash column has reached a height of 16.2 km and is moving westward toward Bali. Low-level emissions up to 6.1 km are heading southeast of Flores. The aviation danger level has been raised to red.

From March 12 to 18, the volcano had already shown activity with ash emissions up to 2.5 km and increased seismic tremors. The eruption lasted about 11 minutes, starting at 22:56 local time. Authorities have not reported any damage so far but warn of possible new bursts of activity.

⛰️🚫 Attention! Mount Agung in Bali will be closed for climbing from April 6 to May 3, 2025, due to the important Ida Batara Turun Kabeh ceremony at Pura Besakih Temple. This is an official prohibition—violations may even result in deportation.

🌋 Agung is an active volcano and a sacred mountain for locals. Its most recent eruptions occurred between 2017 and 2019. Currently, the volcano is stable and safe to visit. 🙌

Day of Silence in Bali – March 29

On March 29, Bali will observe Nyepi, the Day of Silence—a sacred day when the entire island comes to a complete standstill.

⏳ From 6:00 AM on March 29 to 6:00 AM on March 30, the following is strictly prohibited:
• Leaving your home or hotel;
• Making noise;
• Using lights and electricity.

🚫 On this day:
• Bali’s airport is closed – no flights will depart or arrive;
• No boats or ferries operate – travel between islands is suspended;
• Cafés, shops, and all businesses remain closed.

Strict Enforcement of Rules

The Pecalang (traditional Balinese security officers) patrol the streets to ensure compliance. If caught outside, you may be stopped and asked to undergo a purification ceremony, which can sometimes come with a fee. Ignoring the Nyepi rules could cost anywhere from hundreds of thousands to several million rupiahs. More importantly, disregarding these customs is seen as disrespectful to the local culture.

Want to Avoid Staying Indoors?

If you’d rather not spend the day inside your hotel or villa, you can leave Bali before Nyepi. The restrictions apply only to Bali, Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and Ceningan, so heading to other islands is an option. We recommend traveling on March 27-28 to avoid disruptions.
