In Lovina, you’ll find friendly pods of dolphins, usually at dawn. To reach them, you’ll need a boat and a local captain who knows the best spots. Dolphins are typically found about a kilometer from the shore, sometimes a bit further.
⛵ You can watch the dolphins from the boat or use snorkeling gear to swim alongside the boat with your head underwater until you find a pod. Wild dolphins are unpredictable, so some days you might not see any. But usually, in a 2-2.5 hour trip, you will encounter at least one pod.
Lovina is in the far north of Bali, so it’s best to plan an overnight trip.

From July to October, the waters around Nusa Penida are home to the remarkable mola mola, also known as the sunfish 🐠
The mola mola is renowned for its impressive size and unique appearance. It is one of the largest bony fish in the world, with adults reaching up to 3 meters in length and weighing over 1000 kilograms, earning it a spot in the Guinness World Records for its size.
Typically, these marine giants inhabit deep, cooler waters. However, from July to October, they ascend closer to the surface, between 18 to 40 meters deep, for a “cleaning” session. During this time, they can be seen near coral reefs where smaller fish nibble parasites off their skin. This rare phenomenon attracts divers from around the globe.

2️⃣ Stay Calm and Move Gently: Sudden movements can startle these gentle giants. Keep your movements smooth and your swimming pace steady. Use only your fins to swim; avoid splashing and rapid arm movements.
3️⃣ Do Not Chase Mantas: If a manta ray swims away, do not chase it. Chasing stresses the animals and disrupts their natural activities. They are more likely to interact with you if you are calm and non-threatening.
4️⃣ Float, Don’t Stand: Standing on the reef or seabed can damage the delicate coral and disturb the ecosystem. Always float and keep yourself neutrally buoyant to avoid contact with the reef.
5️⃣ Be Mindful of Your Equipment: Keep all your snorkeling gear securely attached. Loose items can scare the rays or pollute the water. Make sure your snorkel, mask, and fins are well-fitted to avoid any accidental loss.
6️⃣ Take Only Photos, Leave Only Bubbles: While it’s wonderful to capture memories of your encounter, ensure your photography does not interfere with the rays. Use underwater cameras respectfully and avoid using flash which can disorient and disturb marine life.
