What sort of holiday booker are you?

Do you plan, know where you want to visit, and book well in advance?

Or last minute book a bargain?

Do you know you can do both!

How do you do that? Well, here’s the answer, only tested on many occasions with TUI bookings though, and do read the T&Cs obviously.

I book one holiday, well in advance and pay by direct debit, which means I’ve generally paid off the holiday 12 weeks before departure, then I look to see if there are any destinations offers, or late deals, the later are available around 6 weeks before departure, then if they’re any destinations and hotels I want to change to I do that through the App, £50 change fee per person! So as an example I booked a week in a lovely hotel in Izmir in September, but saw that Mexico was on offer so changed to a 10 night stay in Rivera Maya in June for around the same price. You need to change before the cancellation date 28 days before departure, and do thoroughly check the T&Cs before doing this!

Pre covid there were lots of deals to be had, I use to set a £500 per person budget and book flights, hotels, transfers, airport parking to this amount, it took some leg work but I went to some lovely hotels in beautiful countries, a week in Marrakesh in the Kenzi Agdal Medina all inclusive, flights from Liverpool to Marrakesh, on Ryanair, hotel the night before, petrol and parking was around £520 each, an absolute bargain, but that was 2018, 6 years later it’s definitely not that cheap. So the key is if you can:

Book out of school holidays

Look at regional airports, maybe decide a radius to where you can travel from, for me it’s Leeds, Manchester, East Midlands, Liverpool, Durham and possibly Newcastle

Any flight under 5 hours, they’ll all be slightly uncomfortable if you’re going economy, chose a budget airline

Use skyscanner to search, or a guest/incognito browser if on the airline website

Look at sites like Booking.com where you can choose different ways to book, including free cancellation, pay when you arrive, although this usually is slightly more expensive, it can be cheaper than a package deal

Alway have insurance, mines with my bank account so it’s always there.

So if you are like me and maybe have enough for your flight but need a few more paydays to pay for the hotel it makes sense

I have to say I’ve booked this way many times with no issues but there’s always going to be a first !

I’ve been lucky enough to travel from the age of 5, my first holiday abroad was to Athens, way back in the 70s, my parents loved to holiday abroad and were fortunate enough to be able to take us to some truly wonderful countries, mainly in Europe, so my love of hopping on a plane has been nearly forever.

I get asked about how I afford/find holiday bargains so I thought I’d make a page 😎
