Friend and famous Skinner Sight maker Andy Larsson recently discussed open carry of a pistol and why he felt like it was a poor tactic. I agree, for his reasons plus this:
I forget who it was I heard mention this first, but it has formed part of my teaching to new shooters who ask about open carry.
Even in a simple disagreement or even low-level altercation, where no use of force is applied, if you’re open carrying the other person gets a clear view and description of your side arm.
In this world of falsely self-entitled and (let’s be honest) angry and crazy people, that person may decide to call the police and lie. Just for spite.
They’ll claim you pulled your gun out and threatened them, which in itself is aggravated assault in most jurisdictions.
When the police arrive and you deny the incident, they’ll have a full, accurate description of your actual side arm! It could give a bit of credence to their otherwise improbable report and perhaps cost you a trip to jail, and legal fees.
Absent any other witnesses, it could cause you real problems legally defending yourself against such a malicious allegation. They may not prevail, but you’ll be out a lot of time and money and damage to your reputation with authorities.
~ So in addition to everything people say about open carry being a poor tactic and you getting shot first, remember you’re also giving a full description of your holster and firearm to any mentally marginal A$$ wipe who wants to ‘red flag’ or just cause you trouble.

Since the beginning of 2024 the NRA membership has been on an enviable winning streak.

1st Win of 2024
The members and the few Directors who have been clamoring for justice were vindicated by the NYAG by the verdicts delivered in the NY vs NRA suit. The jury found the Board of Directors and the leadership had not fulfilled their duty to the members and had permitted the misappropriation of members' money and other charitable assets.

2nd Win of 2024
Capitalizing on the jury decision and the shining of light on the malfeasance inside the NRA, the Board of Directors election immediately following the decision in the NY vs NRA case saw the seating of “The Four for Reform” candidates running for the Board of Directors on petition. This vote also saw the unseating of 2 past presidents of the NRA and another 4 members of the ruling cabal. Another outstanding victory for the members.

3rd Win of 2024
At the “Annual Meeting of Members 2024” in Dallas, Texas, the members listened to the presentation of a Resolution authored by the NRA leadership to move the NRA headquarters to Texas.

After some discussion from the members and the admission of a lack of strategic planning and financial feasibility on the part of the NRA leadership, the Texans, at a meeting in Texas, voted overwhelmingly NOT to approve moving the NRA Headquarters to Texas.

A resounding win for the members. And yet another ill-advised, ill-conceived and foolhardy exercise in multi-million-dollar corporate malpractice was successfully defeated.

4th Win of 2024
Only 2 days later, The NRA Board of Directors met on Monday, May 20, 2024. History was made at the meeting. Never in NRA history, I am told, have board leadership positions been filled from a nomination from the floor.

A majority of the Board of Directors had been listening to the members, just enough reformers had been elected and just enough of the cabal members had been unseated. Three of the top 4 positions, including a new Executive Vice President, were elected and seated.

5th Win of 2024
Just days following the Board of Directors leadership victory, the NRA won a great First Amendment victory at the United States Supreme Court. The court found -unanimously- that the State of New York had violated the NRA’s First Amendment rights. So irrefutable was the argument that Justice Sotomayor, no friend of the 2A or the NRA, wrote the ruling. Another great victory for freedom in America!

6th Win of 2024
The staff is elated in Fairfax and the NRA is on a new course of transparency, openness and clarity. That is better than a win per month, 6 wins from February through the end of May.

Are you tired of winning yet?
- We have the right people in the right job, at the right time, in the right place.
- We have new policies, procedures and controls in place.
- Better yet, we have honest leaders in place.
- We will be good stewards of your trust and our members money and assets.

Much remains to be accomplished at the NRA. I have been on the board of directors for 15 years, and I have kept clamoring for others Board members to wake up and stand up for our members. We are doing that - and the movement is growing.

Over the last few years fi****ms sales have been burgeoning and the NRA has been nowhere to be found contributing to the safety, education and training of millions of new gun owners. We have millions of children, young adults and seniors waiting for us to fulfill our core responsibility. America is calling and we are responding.

Come and help us climb the mountain. We have got this!
The NRA needs YOU - to help us rebuild the organization to better than its former greatness.

We have much work to be accomplished, great issues to decide and great legislators and executives to elect.

God Bless you and thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your support.

My summer pocket/ waist gun now is a S&W shield, but …
I have carried an airweight J for 45 years. It started with a heavily used 37, then a nickeled humpback. As a uniform cop I wore one of those Safariland ‘wetsuit’ legs, then an Uncle Mikes pancake on my bodyarmor straps under zippered shirt.
When the Cents returned I got one that I eventually gave to my daughter.
Today, my jogging gun/ lawn mowing/ quick trip gun is a 642 with, on recommendation of Ed Head, the Crimson Trace green laser grips.

If you are dry-fire training with a striker fired pistol using a laser system where you have to rack the slide each time you press the trigger, you are creating a training scar.
They are fine for timing and maybe improving your first shot on the presentation, but for multiple targets, transition drills, firing pairs, or even failure drills; it’s limiting and could even cause a bad conditioned response.
So I say that, No: “any” dry fire training is not necessarily better than no dry fire training.
They make training reset magazines that work with the laser systems and also SIRT pistols and other realistic training aids that allow multiple trigger presses.
Then you’re actually doing something constructive.

Every gun has a story.
My Great Uncle John was a bit of a character. He was my Grandfather‘s youngest brother by about 20 years and was with us until 2015.
This old 1959 Blackhawk was his revolver.
Now, I wasn’t there, but I’ve been told by reliable sources:
Ol’ John had a great nephew on his wife’s side of the family about my age that owned the place with a small shooting range in his backyard. You didn’t have to twist Uncle John’s arm too much to get him to walk outside to plink at targets or just watch, even as he approached 90.
One day, his nephew demonstrated his prowess with a fancy $3500 double stack 9mm 1911 (or 2011). He rapidly drew and rang steel and exploded a couple of water bottles with his pistol, then said to Uncle John,
“It’s about the most advanced handgun made! Do you want to try it?”
Faster than anyone would have imagined, old John drew this R***r from under his coat and shot right at his nephews feet. The assembled there all shouted and jumped back.
He’d killed a copperhead snake in the tall grass not more than 5 steps from his nephew.
After everyone calmed down Uncle John asked,
“Do you want to try it?”

While I train both armed citizens and LEOs I have personally made this mental observation.
Seems more and more people show up as if they were going to war with Navy Seals
Look, if it’s your fantasy to wear this stuff with knives and hatchets, and all this other junk, as well as dump pouches, and 20 magazines, enjoy yourself at school…
But don’t delude yourself into believing that you’re ‘training for the real world.’ You’re just not. *
Train with what you carry.

* Except St. Louis, Detroit or Chicago. You may be underequipped for there.

See Sweet Lips was a rifle,
named for a girl from Tennessee,
and when Sweet Lips spoke
the chains that bound us broke,
and struck a mighty blow for liberty.

Every gun has a story.
~ This cabinet is full of them.
All I have to do is open the door and breathe them in.
The strong smell of wood and Hoppes mixes with the essense of past hunts and the Appalachian woods. Dad’s cologne is there very faintly; Granddaddy’s wool shirts that were kept in a cedar drawer with moth balls mixed with his pipe smoke.
Less and less as I grow older.
It was hand built by my Dad in 1964 for his (at the time) 80 year old Dad. Grandaddy lived to 100, Dad to 92.
Some of these are their guns, a couple were my additions.
I have a real gunsafe elsewhere, and this one has a motion detector on it, but an old fashioned type cabinet like this deserves the right guns.
