Wow - just some of the reasons why we have chosen the Misool Foundation as one of our favourite conservation projects in Asia!
It's Friday! We're celebrating by bringing you some fun and fascinating facts about Raja Ampat's plentiful reefs.
Raja Ampat is known as the Amazon of the Ocean. It’s also been called the fish factory of The Coral Triangle. There are more species of fish in Raja Ampat than anywhere else. And Misool has often been named as the jewel in the crown of Raja Ampat’s astounding marine biodiversity.
Many of these species are endemic, rare, or never previously described. We’ve crunched the numbers for you. Please feel free to quote these at any upcoming dinner parties or during your next dive trip.
1,564 - the number of species of reef fish described in Raja Ampat's 40,000 square kilometers/1 million acres
500 - the number of species of reef fish described in the Caribbean's 2,754,000 sq km/680 million acres
200:1 - relative density of fish species in Raja Ampat vs. the Caribbean
19 - the number of new species of ‘restricted range endemics’ described at least in part in Misool in the past 10 years.
3 - species (one described, two undescribed) that are currently known ONLY from Misool
4 - the number of pygmy seahorse species found in Misool
2 - the manta species which visit us and 3 for the colour variant (10 points if you can name them?)
300,000 - the number of acres that make up Misool Marine Reserve and provides sanctuary for all marine life, large and small

DESTINATION TUSTNA, NORWAY
Kim Davidsson and Captain Kenth Linstrand check and assist fellow diver, Carl Ziegler, as he returns to the boat after a deep CCR dive on his JJ-CCR rebreather.
The fjords of Norway offer fantastic diving for all levels from beginner to advanced, and Tustna is no exception. Divers can expect dramatic scenery with steep walls, deep canyons, and boulder formations. Sloping sand banks and kelp forests are filled with an abundant and varied array of marine life providing some incredible photographic opportunities. So there are plenty of reasons to come and enjoy Tustna's diverse topography and beautiful seascapes.

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a condition in which a blood clot (a "thrombus") forms in one or more of the body's deep veins, usually in the legs. If a clot breaks free and travels through the circulatory system, it can lead to life-threatening conditions.

Why is it that we are so obsessed with these romantic, curious but deadly little fish? Although they appear to be terrible swimmers they are in fact very effectively shaped for silent stealth in the water and command an almost perfect predatory kill rate. Masters of disguise they can be hard for inexperienced divers to spot although a keen eye will track even the tiniest of pigmies tucked out of sight, tail tightly curled around a gorgonian frond.
Whilst there are plenty of creatures out there that find seahorses particularly tasty including stingrays, crabs and even penguins, sadly their most threatening predators are human - through both the destruction of their environment and the vain pursuit of using them for jewelry or ornamental decoration.
Be mindful when you are lucky enough to spot one of these delightful little fish, their mating displays and dances last for days and, whilst mesmerizing to watch, if interrupted they may not complete their courtship.

DESTINATION LEBANON - COMING SOON
Thanks to the collaboration, commitment and hard work of Imad Farhat, (Imad Farhat photography), destination Lebanon is scheduled for release very soon! Destination Lebanon will be a unique collection of sites covering the central wrecks and reefs of Lebanon.
Imad began diving in 2008, driven by his inquisitive nature to participate in the preliminary training that would enable him to explore what lay beneath the water’s surface. Once hooked, Imad’s passion gained pace, pushing him further beyond the realms of recreational diving to pursue multiple disciplines ranging from mixed gas training with Leigh Cunningham to technical cave training with ProTec Dive Centres, Mexico and re-breather training with David Armstrong. Imad has acquired proficiency in both back-mount and side-mount configurations, and remains steadfast in his commitment to continually maintain and improve his level of skill and competency through training with GUE.
Imad has now focused his attention on assisting in the conservation and preservation of some of the world’s most pristine, but sadly challenged, underwater environments by investing in the education of future generations. Using innovative technology, Imad is striving towards cultivating a deeper understanding of how negative human behaviours impact our most precious oceans and waterways and threaten the fragile existence of the global ecosystem.
We are sure that our global diving community will be as excited as we are that Imad will be providing us with the opportunity to discover the superb wrecks and reefs that the East Mediterranean has to offer.
