Carpets of purple Desert Sand Verbena blanket the Coachella Valley National Wildlife Refuge with Mount San Jacinto in the distance. 💜🌵

Established in 1985 as part of the Coachella Valley Preserve, the Refuge serves as a sanctuary for the rare Coachella Valley fringe-toed lizard and many other desert-dwelling species. This lizard, federally listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act, is not found anywhere else in the world.

Us walking into the first day of fall.

☑️ Flannels and sweaters out.
☑️ Venti PSL in hand.
☑️ Gourd-geous autumn home decor on full display.

But have done any planning for your trip to Joshua Tree this upcoming busy season (October-May)?

💻 Start by checking out the park website’s for everything you need to know straight from the source!

📲 Download the official NPS App. You can save the park’s information and offline maps to use when you lose cell phone service in the park.

⛺ Make your campsite reservations now. Nearly 85% of our campsites are by reservation only. First-come, first-served campsites are in high demand on weekends, holidays, and during spring break.

Before you arrive, remember:

🏜️ There is no food, water, or gasoline available past the entrance stations. Arrive with everything you need.

🤳 Cell phone reception is very limited. The emergency phone at Intersection Rock is currently down.

🎟️ Buy your pass ahead of time on recreation.gov. This will help reduce the wait time at the entrance station.

🚗💨 Our west entrance station in the town of Joshua Tree is our busiest. For faster entry, try our north entrance in 29 Palms or our south entrance near Cottonwood.

Let's talk about the real desert chic: prickly pear cactus fruit lipstick! 💄

The beloved Mojave Desert tortoise enjoys a simple diet of wildflowers, grasses and, of course, the delectable prickly pear fruit.

These threatened tortoises travel long distances in search of food and water and will cross highways through their territory. Please slow your roll and keep an eye out for them as they are crossing the road, especially during rainy weather. Tortoises are attracted to puddles that form on roadways during rainstorms.

Why did the tortoise cross the road?...To get to the water puddle on the other side! 🛣🐢💧

It’s common to see water gathering on roadways and trails after a heavy storm. These puddles often attract wildlife looking for a drink after a long summer of hot temperatures. While in the park, and keep an eye out for animals on the side of the road or crossing.

It may be tempting to stop your car in the street to take a quick picture, but slippery streets and low visibility can easily cause an accident. If you see wildlife in the park, please give them plenty of space so they can enjoy their rare refreshments in peace. Remember: Joshua Tree is their home, and it is our responsibility to allow animals to live their lives undisturbed.

Today, park rangers continue to assess campgrounds and dirt roads. There are many closures in the park, though the main paved roads are open. We’ll continue to share updates and photos of the park after the storm this week!
