5 Fun facts you might not know about the Dead Sea:

The Dead Sea, Israel

1. The Dead Sea is one of the saltiest bodies of water on Earth, with almost 10 times more salt than ordinary seawater. This is because water flows into the Dead Sea from one main tributary, the River Jordan. It then has no way to get out of the lake and so is forced to evaporate.

The soaring hot and dry conditions of this region mean that large quantities of water are evaporated. This leads to the salt and other minerals becoming more and more concentrated. In fact, it’s estimated that in the whole of the Dead Sea there is about 37 billion tonnes of salt.

2. The high salt and mineral content of the Dead Sea mean that this body of water has powerful healing properties. It’s a popular destination for treating skin problems such as acne, psoriasis and cellulite, as well as muscle ache and arthritis.

The Dead Sea is therefore the biggest free spa on Earth, drawing both tourists and locals alike. However, if you want to indulge further, you’ll find plenty of treatments at the hotels and spas along its shores.

3. Its healing waters have been sought after even since Biblical times. Herod the Great, who reigned between 37 to 4 BC, built one of the world’s first health spas along its shores. According to legend, Cleopatra also loved the Dead Sea and used its products as part of her beauty regime.

4. The Dead Sea’s high salt levels mean that people can easily float on its surface due to the natural buoyancy. Bobbing around like a cork is not only a fun-filled experience, but a great way to relax after seeing Jordan and Israel’s other top sights.

5. Alongside being incredibly salty, the Dead Sea is famous for being the lowest point on Earth. Its surface measures around 423 metres below sea level.

Beer Shevah was the city of our three father’s , whom were chosen by God and blessed with this Land.
You may ask;
Was it merely a desert? ..Desert, yes,but not entirely, as you see a green hill every no and then…
Was this land dry of water? Maybe on the outside, but just little way under the ground, we with find a cave cistern of flowing water!
Was this A pointless town in the middle of no where? You could say so, but Tel Sheba was actually in the middle of the connecting road between Egypt and Syria!

…now we understand why this place was so important in the history books, and still is to this day!

'Nahal Ayun' is a perennial stream that flows all year round in one of the most beautiful northern valleys in the country.

In the 20th century, Lebanese farmers began to exploit all the waters of the springs during the summer months and the Israeli part of the stream began to run dry in the summer months and the fish survived only in a number of deep shady pools. In the absence of a political solution for releasing the waters of the spring to flow in the stream, the Nature and Parks Authority initiated an artificial flow of water in the summer months by digging wells in the region of Nahal Dan and allowing the water to flow into Nahal Ayun.

'Gan Hashlosha', otherwise known as 'The Sachne', is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in Israel. Located in the Lower Galilee, it has become know as THE definition of paradise, and once you visit, you will understand why. Its beautiful pools, shaded by lush palm trees are surrounded by green lawns that stretch throughout the entirity of the park.
The pools at Gan Hashlosha are fed by a natural spring which rises within the park feeding water at a constant 28 degrees Celcius year-round. The spring flows into natural pools which have been somewhat widened by man to create a comfortable swimming destination. The waters flow through the pools, down water falls, into caves and source the Amal Stream that continues towards the Jordan river. The pools themselves draw swarms of people who come say by day for relaxation amid the beautiful lush greenery. It is this amazing scenery which led to Time Magazine naming Gan Hashlosha as one of the most beautiful parks in the world!

Rosh HaNikra is a geological formation on the border between Israel and Lebanon, located on the Mediterranean Sea coast, in Western Galilee. It is a white chalk cliff face that opens up into spectacular grottos.

The Rosh HaNikra grottoes are cavernous tunnels formed by sea action on the soft chalk rock. The total length of the tunnels reaches some 200 meters. They branch off in various directions with some interconnecting segments. A tunnel was built by the British for the Haifa-Beirut railroad line, and in 1968 a second one was dug, both connecting the grottoes with each other and allowing access (currently: only exit) along the former route of the British railroad. For many years though, the only access to the grottoes was from the sea and the native swimmers and divers were the only ones capable of visiting. The 400 meters long tunnel dug in 1968 between the grottoes and slightly above sea level allowed easier access, and soon after a cable car was built to take visitors down from the top of the cliff to the tunnels.

Talitha Kumi....

And Jesus took her by the hand and said to her, “Thalitha koum!” (Which means, little girl, I say to you, arise!).
Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk.”

"Then He took the child by the hand, and said to her, “Talitha, Kumi,” which is translated, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” Immediately the girl arose and walked,..."

In 1851, inspired by the story of Jesus healing the girl in Mark 5, the Christian Diakonisches woman's order from Germany, decided to establish a girls orphanage in Jerusalem.
They were sent here by the bishop to take care of the sick, poor and needy in the Holy Land.
At first, the orphanage was opened in Jerusalem's Old City, yet later it was relocated to out side the Old City walls in order to separate each area of aid being provided (example: Hansen House Lepers Hospital - mentioned in previous post).

In 1868 they established and built the orphanage in King George st. and many girls were cared for and educated in the Christian faith through the women's work. The orphanage functioned until the Second World War, when they were eventually forced to shut down.
In 1973 the City hall of Jerusalem decided to destroy the building, and what we see today are the few remains hinting to the architectural beauty of the former building.

Since the repurposing of the location in the 70’s, it became known as a place to schedule a date .
“See you at Talitha Kumi Saturday night 8 o’clock“...yet, today it stands hidden behind one of Jerusalem's busiest bus stops... Just goes to show that no matter where you look in Jerusalem, there is always a story to be told!

Antipatris, Israel
°
Antipatris was a city built during the first century BC by Herod the Great, who named it in honor of his father, Antipater. Now a national park, the location is known today as Tel Afek / Antipatris and lies at the strong perennial springs of the Yarkon River, North East of Tel Aviv, Central Israel. Throughout history the marshlands around the springs proved to be an obstacle between the hill country and the Mediterranean Sea, forcing travellers and armies to pass through the narrow pass between the springs and the foothills of Samaria. This gave the location of Antipatris/Tel Afek significant strategic importance.
The city was located between Caesarea Maritima and Lydda, on the great Roman road from Caesarea to Jerusalem, and as mentioned in the New Testament, Paul the Apostle was brought by night from Jerusalem to Antipatris, to then continue to Caesarea Maritima the next day in order to stand trial before the Roman governor Antonius Felix.
In 363, the city was badly damaged by an earthquake which contributed to the arrangement of ruins we see today.

Genesis Land is situated in the heart of the Judean desert, on the way to the Dead Sea, in the land where the Patriarchs lived. A magical place, it enables visitors to experience life as it was in biblical times. Visitors to Genesis Land are greeted by Eliezer, Abraham's manservant, and by a train of camels which lead you down to Abraham's tent, where you will experience his legendary hospitality. Fresh Pita making and Shepherding are among the different workshops offered as well as meals and other activities.

The Sea of Galilee is a freshwater lake, situated in Northern Israel, it is the lowest freshwater lake on Earth and the second-lowest lake in the world, lying at around 200m below sea level. The lake is fed partly by underground springs but its main source is the Jordan River, which flows through it from north to south.
The Sea of Galilee is a natural gem in the nothen countryside of the Galilee as well as being an abundant fishing location, since before the times of Jesus.
Other than being such a geographical treasure, the lake's claim to fame is most definitely the abounding stories of Jesus Christ, who sailed on, preached on, and walked on these very waters.
