Kicking off 2025 with huge congratulations to Kerr Watson, Brimmond's Projects Director, on his graduation from Robert Gordon University with a BA in Business Management...

Not only achieving a Distinction...but also collecting the 'Deans Award' for academic excellence!⭐

Studying whilst working full time and having responsibilities outside of work is a big undertaking - and we are so proud of Kerr's much deserved achievement and recognition of his hard work... well done Kerr👏🥳

Kerr is the second member of our leadership team to complete their first university degree whilst at Brimmond.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐮𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐞... we have a third coo!🐮🧡

Last month, Brimmond placed the winning bid of £25K in the Charlie House HQ auction for a life-size Highland ‘coo’ sculpture... the third and final member of the family.

Mummy Coo, Barbara, will be joining Charlie, the original coo and gorgeous calf, Louis in pride of place outside of our Kintore HQ. Louis was named after the son of Charlie House founders Tracey and Craig Johnstone, who sadly died last year aged just 15.

The striking sculptures have been crafted by renowned metalwork artist Kev Paxton and his team at ‘ArtFe’ in Edinburgh, using recycled waste metal donated by John Lawrie Metals.

Emma Leiper Finlayson, Director of Fundraising at Charlie House said: “The team at Brimmond are a truly special group of people. Their support has a truly meaningful and profound impact, helping local children and their families to get the care and support they need when the new specialist facility is built, and enabling them to focus on making every moment count at the most difficult of times.”

Managing Director of Brimmond, Tom Murdoch said: “Our whole team has enjoyed supporting Charlie House since voting for it as our charity of choice back in 2019. I know I speak for the whole Brimmond team when I say that we couldn’t be more proud to support Charlie House in the work that they do – it's a genuine lifeline for so many children, young people and their families."

Now in our fifth year of supporting Charlie House, this brings Team Brimmond's fundraising total to a grand £155K to date 👏🌟

We look forward to updating you all post Christmas when Barbara is in situ... and no doubt gaining attention from local passersby's and visitors, just like Charlie and Louis!

We are well and truly on the countdown to the Christmas break here at Brimmond HQ 🥳

The team last week enjoyed our end of year townhall presentations followed by a 'Festive Night In' with gin & whisky tasting from the Inverurie Whisky Shop, top notch food from Smoke and Soul, games from R&M Leisure, delicious cocktails and drinks from Reynolds Cocktails and a stunning event space, music and karaoke from George Walker Events.

It's so important to us that we celebrate and reward our people for all they do... and this year is no exception. A few highlights of our collective achievements from 2024:

Team Brimmond and guests had another fantastic evening celebrating and supporting the important work that our charity partners, Charlie House HQ do for local families in the North East of Scotland 🧡

This is the fourth year that we have been headline sponsor of this special event... and four years in a row that we left feeling inspired to do more and give more.

The night was filled with fabulous entertainment, dancing, food and fundraising - but most important was hearing directly from a Charlie House Mum and Dad about their experiences of caring for their daughter, and the impact of the nearest specialist care facility being over 100 miles away. There wasn't a dry eye in the room.

The evening closed with Brimmond being the highest bidder for 'Mummy Coo' Barbara... who completes the herd and will soon join Dad Charlie and baby Louis in the Brimmond coo pad in Kintore 🐮

Thank you to all who joined us and congratulations to the Charlie House team who once again pulled off an unforgettable event.

The still needs to raise £3million to create a specialist care facility for children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions in Aberdeen. We'd urge other local businesses to get involved in making this a reality and would love to talk to anyone keen help!

Stacking recovered concrete mattresses precisely and achieving the maximum pile height has proved challenging for out clients using the larger existing vessel cranes.

Brimmond’s solution is to provide compact knuckle boom marine crane packages with long outreach (typically 21m) which have deck coverage for stacking mattresses, while allowing the existing vessel cranes to focus on recovery.

A total of 1551 days of support provided across three key platforms, with 100% utilisation!👏

With older assets becoming more economically viable to decommission, Brimmond's rental fleet and bespoke engineering solution has been modified to support this sector.

We are well placed to tackle what is a recognised challenge in the decommissioning sector: projects are repeatedly held up as a direct result of the aging platform cranes’ operability and reliability. This not only has implications for the safety of personnel, but also for the subsequent downtime caused by delays in lifting activities.

These aging cranes are often de-rated, meaning there are limitations placed on their lift capacity and the weather conditions in which they are allowed to operate. Given that the North Sea is not renowned for its balmy climate, this leads to delays, which then impacts on project timescales and budgets.

🎉Congratulations to Keith and Owen on completing the Dublin Marathon in aid of our charity partner Charlie House HQ!🧡

It seemed only right that they celebrate with a pint of Dublin's finest Guinness following the race 🍺... and a big slice of cake when they returned to work. We think they more than earned it!

Earlier in the year the pair also represented Charlie House by smashing the Edinburgh Marathon... AND the Banchory Beast Race.

Everyone at Brimmond are incredibly proud of their efforts and commitment to their training to make it happen. Huge well done!

We are delighted to share that we have signed a 5-year contract with the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) for crane servicing and engineering support on the Royal Research Ship (RRS), Sir David Attenborough.

Our largest service contract to date sees Brimmond become the main hydraulic contractor for refit periods, working across the ship’s Rosyth and Harwich bases. We have committed 12 technicians to work on the prestigious project.

Brimmond’s Managing Director, Tom Murdoch, said: “We have been providing engineering support for the marine cranes onboard this state-of-the-art ship – one of the most advanced polar research vessels in the world - for the past 2 years. There’s no doubt that we have won this substantial contract extension with such a high-profile client on the strength of our team’s technical expertise and commitment to quality. It’s an honour to be involved in a project of such global significance, and we look forward to making sure that the cranes onboard are in the optimum condition to support the team’s world-leading scientific research in Antarctica.

“This project also forms a key part of our strategy to diversify our operations beyond our core market of oil and gas, and as our largest service contract to date, demonstrates the demand for our service offering across a wide spectrum of sectors.”

Andy Webb, Technical Superintendent on the BAS vessel added:
“‘Brimmond were initially brought onto the vessel to support BAS with crane work as the UK distributor and service supplier for Heila cranes. Following initial service visits, it was clear that Brimmond were able to support the Sir David Attenborough with a much wider scope of works, extending their support with numerous hydraulic systems which require constant repair and modifications.

“In early 2024 BAS were able to secure a 5-year framework agreement with Brimmond to support the vessel during each maintenance period it is available within the UK. The most recent maintenance period saw a team of engineers attend the vessel to conduct pipework repairs, crane repairs and routine maintenance. The highly skilled team of engineers performed their task in a professional manner and continue to go over and above.”

Last week, one of the biggest e-HPUs we’ve 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 made at Brimmond left the workshop, making its way to the Brae Alpha where it will replace the existing rig services HPUs.

Standing at 2.5m tall and 4.3m wide… it’s fair to say that the bespoke machine provided much excitement at Brimmond HQ.

The client’s previous system utilized 2 x HPUs to power 4 consumers, and Team Brimmond were set the task to replace the HPUs with 1 unit still servicing the 4 x consumers… with each of the consumers requiring different flow and pressure.

🔺 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐅𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬
- Remote Panel – interlocked from local panel operation
- 2 x 110kW Electric motors each driving a 200cc axial piston pump – only 1 pump allowed to run at a time due to interlock system protection
- Custom built pressure manifolds utilized to control pressure for the desired consumers
- 350 Bar max working pressure
- Max flow 280lpm (limited by system design)
- Primary frame designed and certified to DNV-ST-E273
- 10kW Tank Heater – preventing operation below set temperature
- Fluid Tank – 1500L usable capacity
- Dual opening doors providing greater access whilst limiting external footprint

🔺𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲 𝐅𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬
- Pressure relief and pressure reduce valves
- Emergency stops
- Numerous safety shutdowns built in to the unit including;
- High discharge pressure shutdown
- Low discharge pressure shutdown
- High High fluid temperature shutdown
- Low Low Fluid Level Shutdown
- Suction Valve Closed Shutdown
- Motor Overload
- In addition to the shutdowns there are various alarms built into the unit including;
Filter Clogging Indication
High fluid temperature Lamp

Phase Reversal Lamp

Generating over £2million since April this year alone, it’s fair to say that Brimmond’s marine crane division is having an exceptional year ⭐

With an enviable track record in successfully supplying and servicing marine cranes to suit client requests, Brimmond, stock, rent, refurbish, repair and upgrade a diverse and ever-increasing range of new and secondhand marine cranes.

As the exclusive UK and Ireland distributor, service partner and agent for Heila Marine Cranes, the company continues to invest in stock marine cranes with the aim of reducing lead times, and offering a higher quality service to customers.

➡ Technical Sales Manager, Paul Dingwall said: “Supply chains continue to be tested, which has affected all marine crane manufacturers as they struggle to source materials. This has translated into increased costs and even possible project delays. Based on this, Brimmond took the decision that it is imperative to keep stock of marine crane models which should assist our clients who require a quicker turnaround at a secure cost.

“We have maintained a varied range of sizes of marine crane models over the last couple of years, from 8 tonne-meter (txm) up to 175txm for our stock, all now successfully sold and operating on client assets.”

Earlier in the year Brimmond secured an order for its largest crane to date, a 650 tonne-meter (txm) Heila Active Heave Compensated (AHC) Offshore Subsea Lifting Crane. This impressive high specification model is currently in production at the Heila Factory in Italy, but Brimmond are happy to announce that an identical crane is being manufactured for stock and due to be completed early 2025.

The Brimmond team are highly skilled in modifying stock crane packages to suit client specific requirements, leveraging their range of world-leading rental and stock marine cranes, supported by their skilled technicians for installation and maintenance.
