It was great to see so many Calm Waters Rowing students racing at the Head of the Occoquan last weekend. Here are two of them as we pose with our medals. Always a fun regatta and a great way to wrap up the season. Thanks to all the volunteers and congratulations to all the racers.

Beautiful weekend of racing on the Occoquan. Hopefully the ideal weather will remain for our last week of classes.

Got a lot done yesterday! Removed all the boats, took out the racks, cut down the leaning tree, reset the racks, loaded the boats back up. Finally getting back to normal after the flood and after Michael smashed some boats.

It's been a tough fall for us here. First our seven foot flash flood...then Michael came calling and wiped out one third of our fleet. Despite all that, John worked hard to get everything back in order and we're still rowing! A few more sessions before we close out the season in mid-November.

Florence left us in peace but a few days before Gordon dumped a foot of rain in less than 12 hours and we got a 7 foot surge on our lake! Fortunately John got everything back ship shape and we've had rowers all weekend.

First sessions of 2017 are in the books! Fortunately spring decided to show up on time this year and we've had mostly good weather for rowing. No ice here! We have had a few unintentional swims but everyone successfully made it back into their boats, a little chilly perhaps but another lesson learned.

One last session before we close out our 15th season, hopefully the mild fall weather will continue. Thanks to all who visited us this season and we'll hope to see even more of you next year.
This weekend we traveled down to the Head of the H***h for one last race. One of the reasons I've gotten back into racing is to put my money where my mouth is. I'm rowing the technique I coach and though I haven't been quite as successful as I'd like at the Charles I've continued to be able to best younger, stronger rowers. I finished 4th again at the Charles in the 50+ 1x, tough headwind conditions that I unfortunately didn't handle as well as I should have. At the Head of the Occoquan, I raced the Champ 1x, 40+ 2x and 40+ 4x. My toughest competitior didn't race the 1x this year but in winning the race, I bested the woman who came in 4th in the 30 - 39 category at the Charles. Crazy how fast the 50+ field is! John raced his single too and with minimal training, he came in a respectable 5th place. At the H***h I raced my single, won my age group by over a minute and had the fasted adjusted time of all the women, 4th fastest raw time. Screaming fast conditions, tail wind with the current that made for some fast racing. I also got to jump in a mixed 8. At the start of the race, the speed coach showed 1:29 splits. Wow! I'm so used to using a speed coach in my single, I didn't know it could read so low! That was fun. No more racing this fall but I'll be back racing next fall, looking for whatever edge technique can give me while also training hard.
Over the winter, we'll continue to write technique articles for www.row2k.com. Hope you'll check them out and give us feedback.
