This is my latest article. It contains eye-opening numbers related to trade between China from one side and Europe and northern Africa from the other. It explains as well the importance of the Levant region as a strategic route for this trade. The magnitude of the numbers causes the ever increasing tension and the alternative routes explain some stakeholders interest in sustaining this tension.

Maybe it was about oil for the last century. It is not for the next hundred years.

Here you go, a new piece that draws the current landscape of trade and investment with Syria in regards to financial transactions: it examines the current situation under Western sanctions and lays out options that would bypass the sanctions system, should they not be lifted.

I have published it with the Middle East Institute, the leading and oldest Washington-based think tank dedicated to the study of the Middle East.

If you have business interests in Syria, present or future, this piece gives you some context. However, a ground visit is a must for you to constitute a personal feel of the situation.

As the conflict in Syria concludes, the next phase will center on rebuilding and will require hundreds of billions of dollars in investment. For now though, sanctions imposed by the U.S., U.K., and EU block money from flowing in.

In this article, I discuss 5 matters that are worth looking into and incorporating in Lebanon's economic policy.

Their attractiveness lies in the fact that they are regulation-based and not investment-based, and consequently do not incur considerable costs for an already strained budget. If fairly successful, I estimate the midterm returns to be in the range of $50-60 billion, a directly taxable income, not including other forms of taxation such as individual income.

I'd be happy if this is brought to the attention of the national policymakers.
