1 Samuel 14 vs 6-7 & vs 21-22
Here we find Saul’s son, Jonathan, taking a step of faith to go out against the Philistines. He has one great friend and companion in his armor-bearer. This guy tells Jonathan that he will follow him no matter what. He is committed to him, heart and soul.
Do you know what it’s like to have a friend like that? Have you ever been a friend like that? Partners to the end! Do whatever your heart desires and I’ll be with you! I’m your brother! That is what Jonathan’s armor-bearer told him. It is amazing the amount of strength a person can get from a friend like that. You can climb mountains that were previously too tough to tackle. Your courage is revitalized when a friend steps up beside you and promises you his trust.
Later, (vs. 21-22) this story shows us how the courage that Jonathan gained from this allowed him to fight valiantly and also lit the torch of a few others, who had been laying back waiting for a leader to emerge.
Do you suppose that there might be people like that in your life today also? People who merely need a friend or a courageous leader to step forth and show them that the enemy can be defeated? They don’t have to be held down by all of those things that have them on the run.
Maybe it’s a friend who is afraid to make a commitment to God. Maybe it’s a friend struggling with peer pressure and can’t make the break from the enemy of drugs and alcohol. Maybe he is hiding in the hills, waiting for the “Sons of God” to manifest themselves.
Maybe if you just take that step forward you will see tons of folks ready to follow your lead. People who merely needed a touch of faith from a person committed to doing the right thing. Lord, let me be that guy.
