It's My Birthday!!!

I was asked a question by my son. How does it feel like turning another year older? I told him amazing. I have been working hard to become a better version of myself. If I could give any words of wisdom to my younger self. It would be that all things will work together for your good. I have never been so excited about life, family, and friends. I want you to know it will get greater later. Don't give up on your dreams, and certainly don't give up on life.

A special thank you to our facilitator for doing such a phenomenal job guiding the guest through the process and dropping gems along the way. As well as the caterer for serving up such a delicious spread. And to each and every one of our guests for attending and sharing!

In the Boss Ladies Talk community we often talk about the power of women telling their stories. Well, ya’ll...I told my story of survival and it’s been featured in MOM-Ministries Domestic Violence Awareness calendar.

I AM A SURVIVOR OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE!

There isn’t enough space here to write out my entire story, but I’ll share some of it.

Looking back I am now able to put things in perspective and see things for what they really were. It started when I was a teenager. I thought I was in love, but I didn’t know it at the time that I was just looking for an escape from a bad situation in my home life.

I saw the red flags even before the first incident, in his anger and temper. Which should have signaled to me that I needed to leave him alone, but I was in my “seeking love in all the wrong places” phase. I recall us hanging out with our friends from the neighborhood. He and I were tussling around and he slapped me across my face with an open palm. It hurt so badly, but I just brushed it off as we were kidding around. I was embarrassed and humiliated. Yet, I somehow managed to distort this and looked at that a sign of his affection towards me.

As I continued in this relationship his temper got worse and to make a bad situation even worse he started doing drugs. His jealousy controlled him and he tried to control me. It got so bad that I developed anxieties and started walking in fear.

In another incident he chased me down because he thought he saw me with another boy and when he caught up to me he hit me from behind slamming my face into a gate and knocking my tooth out. Blood was everywhere! I never felt so ashamed, scared, and angry.

By this time I had two sons by him and I was only 19 years old.

Unfortunately, this continued until one day I made decision that my sons wouldn’t grow up seeing their mom being abused and I gave my life to God. Of course, only after being accidentally shot by a man who was trying to save his sister from her domestic violence relationship 🤦🏾‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️ God has a funny way of getting our attention!

What’s interesting is that I almost feel like whoever it was that went through that season of abuse no longer exists. 🙌🏾

Enjoy the journey of becoming! There’s so much beauty in process but sometimes we miss it because we’re so destination-focused. If you learn to enjoy the process of growing, learning, and getting better then you will keep going until you get to your expected end. If you choose to resent it then you may give up and settle for a less rewarding life OR miss out on some critical lessons and joys along the way.

But God didn’t promise us joy and peace once we achieved our big goals or got to a certain level in life. Joy and peace are for the here and now...and should continue on unbothered by circumstances. Even on your hardest days don’t forget that you’re still on your way and ALL OF IT (the good, bad, indifferent) is working together for your good.
