Our 4th day on the John Muir Way with a spectacular 10 miles from Falkirk to Linlithgow. We left the Antonine wall and Callendar Park House at Falkirk and climbed through the woods to join the Union Canal. We saw not just lots of ducks and swans but also goldfinches and a soaring, swooping eagle. The Avon Aqueduct carries the canal over the River Avon at a height of 26m and length of 250m built in 1822. The longest and highest in Scotland. Then down the banks of the Avon to the 26 arches of the Avon Viaduct, which has carried the main Edinburgh-Glasgow railway since 1842. A very satisfactory day!

On 17 January 1746 the Jacobite army led by Bonnie Prince Charlie had their last significant victory against the Government troops on this land just to the south of Callendar Park House, Falkirk. The next battle was at Culloden on 16 April 1746 which ended in a disastrous defeat for the Jacobites. Lovely part of the John Muir Way which few people visit, but definitely a detour from the Falkirk Wheel or Callendar Park. And a very friendly horse came trotting over to speak to us! Part 3 of our John Muir Way walk will be this week so watch this space!

Recognised as a mathematical genius, there is a moon crater named after him - Neper crater. The Tower is now the heart of Edinburgh Napier University.
