Guyana Childhood Days by Kalamo Khan.

Exploring the area near Canal No.2 has been a past time for many kids who grew up in the village especially those who lived near the Conservancy.

Some of our grandparents, mamoo, cha cha, neighbors had farms at Hubabu. Hubabu is creek located about one and a half miles south of the village head. Its flow was cut off when the Conservancy Dam was built. It is a winding creek filled with duck weeds and about twenty feet wide at the mouth. It gets narrower as it goes inland towards the real tropical forest up to Buckpond.

At about three quarters of a
mile from its mouth there were the remnants of a Dutch water power sawmill that used to be up at a high spot on the left side not too far from where the creek takes a sharp turn north.

This area was good fishing spot. Some guys used the area to make Bushrum. That stopped when they were jailed. In the dry weather we would walk there and pick up old Dutch bottle lamps. Many broken fragments of house hold wares can be seen strewn all about mostly half buried. People told us do no take it for the ghost of some Dutch man would come for us in the night. But we took it anyway and have not seen anything in the night.

The creek continues for about half a mile then turns sharply left in a westerly direction and ends up into the forest.
At this turn a short cut was made going east to Conservancy Dam. It was used to avoid going all the way to the mouth of Hubabu creek. It could only be used when water was high.

As we reach the forest towards Buckpond, trees form a canopy over the waterway with sunlight peeping through at gaps. Buckpond is said to be dug by the the Amerindians but no one knows for sure. It is deep and has pure black water that we enjoyed drinking. That was the water we drank then for no one carried any water with them until later when water bag came into being. Even then no one carried water for one just use the hand as a scoop to dip it from the creek and drink. Or we had fun by bending over and put the mouth directly into the water and drank like a cow does.

When there is dry weather this pond area retained its water. The creek there is picturesque and one of the best tropical scenery one can imagine. This is the area some folks had farms and also used to cut greenheart , wallaba, mora and many other woods.

As a small boy my grandfather had a grant there. He used to cut wood and plant a farm there. Apart from mosquito bites near the creek we used to enjoy the real tropical forest. My grandparents and uncle used to cook soup for lunch in a black skillet pot which was held up over the wood fire by a cross wood on two fork sticks. It was quite an experience eating without plates. Plantain leaves from the farm was shaped like a bowl and hand held or dig a hole a place it over. Pointed sticks wre shaped by cutlass and used as fork to eat with.

We would sit under the shades of the trees or under a camp made of manicole leaves and just enjoy that meal eating and drinking the broth. The soup was made with yam, plantain, eddoes, Tania, buck bajee leaves and fresh fish caught at Buckpond.

That place was filled with animal life of the forest. We may hear and see baboons howling especially if it is going to rain. Monkeys jumping from tree to tree. Many sounds of different kinds of insects. We would take some colored small insects on over palms and put in the shirt as temporary pets. Then the musical sounds of the wind blowing on the trees as they sway momentarily. Many birds of various species can be seen and heard. All kinds of Parrots flying overhead. An acuri may run in the farm looking for something to eat. They usually eat the pumpkin or Tania. So they were not welcome. Some guys would hunt them and eat the meat.

This was an experience that is a reminder of the past. Nowadays we see videos of people make believe spending time in forest but this was real life doing it all the time. Folks should go there if you never went. Childhood Days in Canal.

Knowing Your Village Community Project

Every one is invited to participate by commenting on the different sections of the village. It is a way to be connected with our village. You can just check in too.

The village is divided into many sections. How many of us know the names? If we don't then if you live in a particular section please comment and mention near whose house or bridge it starts and ends at.

We should note that Belle West was Wales estate sugar cane fields. It was not Canal No.2 Polder. The village started at Koom's Dam on the northside and Casey Dam on the South side. It ended at the Conservancy Dam. It is bounded by 'B' Line on the north and 'C' Line on the South. The question now is Belle West part of Canal No.2 Polder? If you know please comment.

Here are the different names. If any is missing please fill it. Please try commenting on where each section starts and ends if you are familiar with the area. It could be a person 's name or a bridge across the trench used as a marker.
It would be nice to say in which part you live or used to.

A bit of History quizz at Bottomside

If you are from Bottomside or the village let me see if you remember this bridge. It was the second bridge from Savise Dam in the 60's and 70's until Buckman bridge was built and became the 2nd bridge.

Here is a historical picture of the ruins of what was called Augus bridge, and then Walter bridge. Augus used to live opposite that bridge on the South Section. Walter used to operate a dragline.

Let us see if you agree or disagree with this picture description.

Remembering the Past.

Canal No.2 Polder as I designate it,

"The Village of Bridges"

A look back at the village I grew up in, standing on a bridge over the beautiful Canal that was used as a means of transporting timber, goods and people.

Many people had canoes or ballahus in front their gaps in the canal. Gaats or ramps could also be seen lining the edges and was used to load goods and also bathing.

Ramayana in the Park (Monday, August 12, 2024)
Day 2
Jai Shree Ram! Day two at Ramayana in the Park featured Ayodhya Kanda and it was wonderful that we had Pandit Mahadeo Deopersaud to expound on it. His presentation was dedicated to the late Mataji Chandrawatie Persaud, wife of the late Dharamacharya Pandit Chandrica Persaud. Mataji was a constant fixture at Ramayana in the Park, and other places of worship. Only a year ago, she was at Ramayana in the Park, where Pandit Mahadeo presided. The evening yesterday was sponsored by Mataji’s family and was well attended by members of the public (I will be attending this event,Ramayana in the Park I attended every year, See you all there, All the best)

A promise by President Irfaan Ali soon to become a reality for Conservancy Dam residents. Great work by this government.

Where there was always only a dam, a new road will soon lead in less than six months. Canal No. 2 Conservancy Dam will be embracing its historic first connection to a 1.2-mile road network. This new road is a significant milestone that will enhance accessibility and drive progress for our community, especially for the farmers. It fulfills one of President Irfaan Ali's promises to the people of the community.

Canal No.2 Polder cemetery. This place is historic for many people of the village have ancestors who are buried there. Each grave marked or unmarked, tells a story connected to a family living in the village or of those who have moved out elsewhere whether overseas or other parts of Guyana. The historic roots of most village family can be found right there.

It is always good to visit the graveyard to make prayers for departed souls and to look at tombs of people we once knew growing up.How many of us have family buried there?

It is the 3rd location in the village. According to older folks, the first cemetery was at North Section on the eastern side of Bottomside Masjid. The second was on South side on the eastern section of where Blackbridge or Majee dam is. If anyone one knows more please contribute in your comments.

The pipe at the cemetery according to Shamirool Shakur was donated by the Shamoo family after getting permission from the village NDC. Firstly, they paid and installed a pipe and stand at the entrance of the cemetery. Later they added pipe lines from there into the burial ground and also put in another concrete stand. They currently pay the water bill.

This is a great service to the community. The water is very useful for visitors who go there. It is also used for mixing of cement to make tombs and washing hands, face or feet. It is refreshing to wash up on hot day.

We suggest that It would be appropriate for the NDC to discuss with Shamoo family members and look into making more improvements and pay the water bill.

Folks, Canal seems to be changing fast at the Conservancy Dam. Many people from the area are employed building something big. It is slowly rising up.It is a very good location by the Conservancy where the natural beauty of the village is with plenty of water activities. It is where Sandy used to live at.

There is no sign up advertising what it is going to be. However, some people told me it is going to be a resort or hotel, but I cannot confirm if this is so. But it is going to be a huge building.

Now what will happen when this is up and running. The value of property will rise as a result in the Bottomside area. More businesses will open up and employment created for folks. Keep following this story until it is completed.

What is the solution for Conservancy Dam folks? Request denied to build road at Conservancy. Not practical. Now what? Continue as it has been for ages or build on LineDam as the Minister correctly observed. Make a choice.

People in the Conservancy Dam should use the conditions available. The practical solution is to build that Road on Line Dam. There are no hindrances and it can be built easily. I appeal to folks there to take the backroad which is better than not having anything. Common sense is needed at this time. The Minister Edghill is correct. Build the LineDam Road or nothing will happen.
