Shopping In Baku

1. While visiting a new place, collecting its souvenirs and procuring the city’s unique accessories should be the prime objective. A traveller should indulge himself in the local culture which is possible by visiting the urban and sub-urban markets.

2. Baku is famous for its street bazars and flea markets. However, there are gigantic malls with exorbitant boutiques as well as mid range shops.

3. Taza Bazar : This bazar is almost 70 years old and is located in the middle of Nizami and 28 May Metro station. All kinds of local herbs, natural spices, pickled jars and nuts are available. This bazar is famous for Beluga caviar which is popularly demanded by the locals.The place is however congested and a tourist is advised to be careful. The bazar is noted for its cheap prices.

5. 28 Mall : This mall is not huge but has all the mediocre brands that every tourist can afford. It’s a quick to go mall for shopping as it’s just around the 28th May Station, Baku.

6. Ganjlik Mall : This mall is one of the largest malls in Azerbaijan. A one stop shop with hundreds of brands under one roof. Variety of restaurants and entertainment spots. It is near to Ganjlik Metro Station.

7. Port Baku Mall : This mall provides luxurious shopping for the premium customers. Boutiques including Porsche, Ralph Lauren, Givenchy, Louis Vuitton and many others can be found here. It is located in the Neftchiler area near the Baku Boulevard. Make sure to visit this mall while you are having fun in the Boulevard area.

2. It is famous for it’s splendid landscape features, including mountains, lakes, waterfalls, winter and summer resorts.

3. A tourist can make the most out of this hill station in winter by its breathtaking ice packed views or in summers which are relatively cooler than the Baku city.

4. Azerbaijan highest mountain,Mount Bazarduzu can be seen from Gabala.

5. It will take 4 hours to reach Qabala by train and by car. Bus will take a much longer time.

6. Bus station is found at the beginning of Heydar Aliyev Avenue, east of the central square.

7. You can also get a train form Khachmaz station to Gabala.

8. A tourist can take a taxi ride from 20th January train and Shamahinka Station.

Baku Conveyance

Baku is a big city, capital and commercial hub of Azerbaijan. The city can easily be explored by foot or by taking the following transportation means :

Mini Buses = These buses can easily be hired on the street or booked via local websites. They are perfect for a group. The driver is aware of all the tourist destinations.

Uber = The tourist just need to have a local sim with Uber application in the phone to book an Uber ride. It is one of the cheaper mode of transportation in a car.

London Black Taxis = These cabs have a taximeter. They usually charge a premium rate. It is better to discuss rate before confirming the ride.

Shared taxis = Taxis come in cheap if they are shared by a maximum of 10 persons. They can be easily found on Baku streets.You can call the taxi by dialling +994-9000.

*BakiKart (A Rechargeable electronic plastic card which can be bought from the machine available at the terminal in 2AZN)

Baku Metro (Bus) =
- Bus fare is charged by BakiKart via card scanners installed in the buses
- It is a cheap and quick mode of transport. 0.30 AZN fare is charged irrespective of the distance.
- It is a comfortable ride. Stay focused and keep looking at the stations you want to get off.
- Weblink “Wikiroutes” is highly recommended for a tourist as it tells different buses, their route and time.
- It is very easy to catch a bus, as it arrives at its stop every 5 minutes.

Baku Metro (Rail) =
- Baku Metro has 25 stations. The stations depicts beauty and art and are a must visit for any tourist.
- There are 3 metro lines. Red, Green and Violet.
- Metro fare is 0.30 AZN and can only be purchased via BakiKart.

1. 28 May Station (This station merges two major metro lines, for the traveller to interchange trains.This station also provides a bus shuttle service to the Heydar Aliyev International Airport.Arriving on this station will lead to the Nasimi area of Baku. 3. Icherisheher Station ( This route covers 13 stations.Icherisheher is the last station of this route. It exits in the famous Istiglaliyyat Street. You will find historical buildings and the famous “Fountain Square”)

4. Nasimi Station ( This station will exit to the main roads of Baku City which will lead to Ganjlik Mall, Heydar Aliyev Centre and a little walk towards Freedom Square.

Best Time to Visit Baku!

Always plan a trip when the weather is appropriate and there are festivals happening in the visiting country. It will get a bit costly but you will be fully entertained with the local culture, food and shopping.

An ideal time for a tourist to visit Baku is in summers and spring.

Local accommodation fares increases in summers so it is better to head to Baku in spring.

1) Spring (March, April and May) is the best season to travel to Baku as the temperature in the afternoons is moderate, around 28-30 degree C .Nights are often chilly and enjoyable.

2) Summers (June, July and August) marks the busiest seasons of the year as there are vacations all around the world. However summers make warmer afternoons and windy nights.

3) Fall (September, October and November) brings a humid climate which is not preferred by many tourists.

4) Winter (December, January and February) is a season which experience snow 2-4 times a month. Perfect season for a tourist who plans on sightseeing snowfall. You can find sun in the afternoons with chilly winds.The night gets freezing with temperatures as low as -20 degree C.
Make sure to take warmer clothes in this season accompanying with woolen caps, gloves and boots.

Baku Festivals

Azerbaijan is a country with mixed theologies. Muslims, Christians, Parsis, Jews all live peacefully under one state and celebrate every festival with utmost respect and cheer. A tourist can plan his holiday according to his desired festival/ season and can enjoy not just the country but the awesome food, spiritual events and the local heritage.

1) Eid Ul Fitr / Eid Ul Azha : It is celebrated widely in Baku. The mosques are filled with people. Restaurants go packed as people break their fasts. Streets are lit up with decorations to celebrate the auspicious event.
The celebrating months change every year according to the lunar movements.

2) Navroz : It is a Zoroastrian New Year which is celebrated in the month of March. Events starts at the very beginning and tourists can enrich their experience by the scrumptious food, local dances and bon fire.

3) Victory Day : This day is celebrated on May 9th which marks the Azerbaijan victory over the N***s in the World War 2.Tourists can enjoy local patriotism with a military parade to mark their pride and strength.

4) Republic Day: The Azeris celebrate their Independence Day on May 28th with a national holiday. Singing local songs and placing Azeri flags all around the country.

5) International Baku Jazz Festival: It is a 14 day musical event where musicians all around the world perform together in Baku to celebrate music and art, especially “Jazz”. Baku city is adorned with live music and colorful musician hoardings.
The 2020 event will be held from 9th to 12th October.

Famous Tourist Spots Of Baku:

Allocate at least 2 days to explore the modern attractions of Baku, mainly in the Outer City (Bayir Seher)

Distance from Old City to Outer City is 8-10 km which can be accessed by subway, buses, taxis and by walk.

1.National Boulevard Park

Location: Neftchilar Avenue

It is an enormous park which consists of beautiful walkways, cacti adornments,a huge chess board made on the ground, restaurants and great views of the Caspian Sea.

2. Ferris wheel

Location: Neftchilar Avenue
Ticket: 6-7 AZN

Baku eye is located on Baku Boulevard in the Seaside National Park of Baku. It is illuminated till night, giving the tourist a panoramic view of the city. They are air-conditioned cabins which revolve 360 degree at a slow speed.

There is also a small boat ride in the Baku Boulevard, on the Caspian Sea for the tourist to have a glance at the city.

3. National Flag Square

Location: Neftchilar Avenue

It is a square in the Baku Boulevard which showcases Azerbaijan’s flag, famous for its largest flagpole in the world.

4. Flaming towers

These are 3 skyscrapers made like a burning flame. From evening till night it is lit up with spectacular, vibrant images. The towers are a prominent feature of Baku. It has a residential building and Fairmont Hotel.

5. Heydar Aliyev Cultural Centre

The cultural center is a spectacular architect view which stands out for its humongous fluid, curvy shape style built by the famous British Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid.
The center has a museum which provides extensive history of Baku with souvenir shops for the tourists.

One of the famous tourist spots in the center’s garden is a huge sign of “I LOVE BAKU” where tourist can enjoy their photographic sessions.

6. Matyrs Lane

Location: Next to Izaat Nabiyev Street.

This location is in remembrance of the soldiers who got martyred while fighting for Azerbaijan’s independence.
It has a focal point where the main memorial has an eternal flame. It is a massive one and the heat can be felt from far away.

7. Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum

8. Little Venice

Old City:
It is the most ancient part of Baku. It is made like a fortress.
Inside the fortress there are the following:

Palace of the Shirvanshahs:
A 15th-century palace described by UNESCO as "one of the pearls of Azerbaijan's architecture". Open for public admiration.
Ticket = 15 AZN for adults.
Time = 10am - 6pm

Maiden Tower:
This is a unique 8-floor structure with majestic 4-5 meter thick walls. The tower is magnificent. It has a museum which tells its history.
Ticket = 10 AZN for adults.
Time = 9am - 6pm
There are several souvenir and antique shops in the old city. They amaze the tourist with beautiful handcrafts, dresses, tea sets and their souvenir heritage monuments.
There are several mosques and hammams in the old city as well.
You will also come across tour operators with whom you can book several tours. It is advisable to see the city yourself and book only the distant tours.

Nizami Street:
One of the exciting places in Baku. The common name of Nizami street among locals is Torgovaya, which means Trade in Russian.
The street offers some amazing architectural buildings made in the late 19th century.
It offers expensive international and local brands for shopping.
The illuminated lights of the street at night with hundreds of tourists mingling around makes the whole experience worth loving.

Fountain square:
It is one of the admirable features of the street.

( GYD ).
An elementary airport with splendid architectural structure for the eyes. The officers at the immigration desk will get inquisitive and ask for details. Stay confident.
There are bus services available at the airport. You need to make a Baku Card from the machine, pitch in Manats and you are ready to use the bus service as well as the subway trains. As the traveler is already tired, it is advisable to get to the hotel in a private car. No need to get into any hassle. Go to the parking lot of the airport and there will be many cars for drop off to Baku Centre at reasonable rates. You can also book a car from your hotel. Airport to city centre is a 30 minutes drive.

All passport holders can get an e-Visa of Baku on Azerbaijan e-Visa Website. It is issued online within 3-5 working days. The visa fees is around 45-50 $ (approx 7000rs)

TICKET:
Internationally, there are direct routes to Baku, which have to be searched before booking the ticket.However,all the flights going from Karachi / Lahore to Baku have 1-2 stops, ticket price ranging in between 70-90k, return. It is highly advisable for a traveler when spending substantial amount of money to visit more than one country if their flight has a transit stop or there is an interesting neighboring country. Get a visa for the transit country, vacation there and then move to your required destination. Wait, save more money and annual leaves. Make the most out of your Days Off.
• Karachi to Baku flying time is 4 hours 6 minutes non-stop but the time increases because of the transit stops. Hence enjoy the transit country and then move forward to a new destination.
• Always plan an International trip in advance in order to avail airline deals on their anniversaries, special promotions, spring season and winter months.
