10/1 Today in Florida History from the Florida Historical Society!

1971 - The Walt Disney World Resort officially opened on this date, including Magic Kingdom Park, Disney’s Contemporary Resort, Disney’s Polynesian Resort, and Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground. William Windsor, Jr. was the very first guest. Approximately 10,000 visitors showed up on opening day. Admission prices in 1971 were $3.50 for adults, $2.50 for juniors under age 18, and one dollar for children under twelve. Today, Walt Disney World is the most visited vacation resort in the world, with an average annual attendance of nearly 60 million.

I have a family currently staying at the swan and dolphin. A luxury resort at a moderate price. Although it is not an official resort, it is on Disney property and has many other benefit reserved for Disney resorts. This is definitely a bucket list stay for my wife and I.

If you are lucky enough to go to a Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party, make sure to ask the cast members the name of their bats. It’s a tradition and the names can be very entertaining. A former student of mine named hers Batty White!

Universal and Disney have rides and attractions to meet a variety of guest interest. I usually talk about the popular attractions and forget that some of the smaller, overlooked attractions are the ones that can make a vacation special. I was talking with a family about the height requirements on the Rocking Roller Coaster, when I mentioned the nearby Lightning McQueen’s Racing School. The line went quiet for a second and the mom responded in a low voice ‘my 7 year old will lose his mind.’

Max and I visited the attraction last spring and really enjoyed it. I think being surrounded by elementary age kids ‘losing their minds’ pushed from good to great! 🤩

The Mummy is finally open at Universal Studios! The Mummy is a fantastic ride and is almost worth the trip alone. It was closed when I visited last April and I’m tempted to make a return trip.
I’m available to help you plan that Mummy based trip in the near future.

We rewatched all the Pirates of the Caribbean movies last month as a family. I had forgotten how much fun the movies are to watch together. I really need to start planning that next trip.
Looking forward to getting the family together for more adventures in Orlando.

The Velocicoaster at Universal’s Islands of Adventure is hands down my favorite roller coaster. It has been years since I have got off a roller coaster and immediately got back in line for it. I’ll post a few seconds of video to go with it. The themeing is amazing and it is an amazing coaster.

Two great reasons to visit Disneyland in California. The Electrical Light Parade is my favorite parade of all time and it has been gone for a long time. The World of Color was down when we visited Disney’s California Adventure 4 years ago. We are still talking about when we are going to return for the experience.
