Tonight is the Tybee Island City Council meeting and it seems they have introduced some new agenda items from last weeks notice. In particular of concern:

Changes to the number of public hearings for zoning changes

Restrictions on STR permits in R-1, R-1b, and R-2.

Changes in appeal process for zoning decisions ( Mayor approval only?)

Changes in STR Abandonment

Here is a link to the packet! Make your voice heard.

Significant amendments are proposed to planning and zoning scheduled for March 20th, 2023 at 6:30 pm.

The packet can be found at the link

As our Tybee Alliance continues to advocate for the rights of residents, businesses, and property owners across our island, it’s important to recognize the many ways in which the imposed ordinances lack basic logic.

One of the requirements of the 90-day rental rule, where property owners must successfully rent their homes for a minimum of 90 days to retain their vacation rental permit or have it permanently revoked, is that the listing must also be at “full market value.”

This is a strange and inconsistent rule because there is no clear definition for what is considered “full market value”. This tricky wording is just one of the many examples of city governments doing anything they can – sensical or not – to take away the rights of owners.

As a , we need to band together against these increasingly strict ordinances. Confusing language and harsh statutes create a minefield amid these regulations where residents can unwittingly step on and see their retirement hopes go up in smoke.

Vacation rentals are a significant source of revenue for the local economy on . With the city of Tybee continuing to restrict operations with increasingly unjust legislation, who will foot the bill when the annual $4 million in generated by disappears?

Providing fewer accommodation options limits access to the island, meaning less foot traffic and spending at local shops and businesses. Who will cover the losses that local business owners face that mainly cater to tourists? Or, when those shops are forced to close, who will cover the city’s lost tax revenue?

Tybee residents want to know the city’s plan for recovering millions of dollars in lost revenue in an attempt to turn our welcoming vacation island into a private one. Will the locals be left to foot the bill, or will the services and infrastructure be left to crumble?

Although no plan has been presented, residents and business owners deserve an answer and clear insight into our future.

Update from Tybee Alliance

Despite an overwhelming opposition to the STR ordinances City Council passed the STR ordinances EXCEPT the parking one which was deferred as to needing more work.

The vote was tied by Council members and Mayor Shirley sessions was the deciding vote.

Barry Brown had to excuse himself for a family emergency. Prayers go out to him and his family.

This ridiculous piece of hyperbole is what the people who against STVRs Are sending to every citizen on Tybee to get them to action for their side. Excuse me there is not a house on Tybee Island That looks like the Fourth of July in the front yard every day.

09/11/2021

This is from a private email that was circulated among the forever Tybee people. And sent to everyone against STVRs. For them to Hyperbolize “every day is the Fourth of July in your front yard” is absolutely fear mongering and completely untrue. The island is just vacant in the winter compared to the summer. But anyway read this quote and let it antagonize you to write to City Hall and express your views:

“. BUT, if you want to have quality of life on this island that doesn’t look like 4th of July in your front yard every day, DO NOT LOOK AWAY for the time it takes you to do this. “

I don’t know Josh Morris, who wrote this, but he’s right.

These are what the anti-STVRs are proposing. They say they are not anti-STVRs but they want a cap and they want to destroy our businesses. By the fact that they license us for a certain number of people per room; we advertise for that- and now they’re saying we’re going to cut that in half and also you can’t park on the grass in front of your house. But they’re not enforcing this type of rules for people who own homes… they can park on the grass in front of their house. We have one lawyer that we are interviewing and we will get back to you we need representation to protect our rights and our businesses

23/10/2021

OK no more messing around, there are over 1000 homeowners who cannot vote because they do not live on this island but they pay taxes with their homes on Tybee and they pay taxes with their vacation rentals to Tybee. I have been in touch with many of them and we are going to find a lawyer to represent us to the city. If each of the thousand homeowners only pay $10 each we have enough to get started. We just need a good attorney that can represent us to the city and get us a voice as homeowners who pay taxes and who would like ourNeeds represented. If you know of a good attorney let me know

08/10/2021

OK I can see that the half of the island that is interested in protecting their property values and love STVRs… need to band together! … even the most stringent of those who are Against vacation rentals say that only 37% of the island (including all the condos, are vacation rentals) that means almost 7 out of 10 homes are owned by full time residents. This is an island that is Surrounded by a public beach and unless half of the homes are vacation rentals I am not interested in talking about a cap. We need to get together as a group and protect our home values! The issue is how can we do that? I need someone who is more skilled at organizing groups than I am
