THE TALKING DRUM (GANGAN)

A nightmare of sound technicians

"How can a drum be talking, and some people understand and interpret it to us as a message."

"It's a national pride, but Africa underrate what belongs to them."

"The Yoruba talking drum is probably the oldest mobile phone on Earth. One of the reasons why the armies of the Oyo Empire were formidable was because they could communicate with each other miles apart with the talking drum. It is not just a musical instrument. It is a language, like a computer language, and only the initiated can understand it. Beyond that, it is almost spiritual. Certainly esoteric."

"In modern times, all Nigerian music superstars that have achieved global cross over success with music of Nigerian origin, became big after incorporating the talking drum into their music. I am not talking of artistes who sing in English or pidgin. I refer to singers and performers who sing wholly or partly in a Nigerian language."

"Wizkid exploded in 2011 after featuring the talking drum in his debut studio album, Superstar. And the talking drum based song, Don't Dull, got to Number One internationally."

"Davido has used and continues to use the talking drum generously his albums. And Asake features the talking-drum on his unique sound, as does Burna Boy. There is no need for me to mention how people like King Sunny Ade, Sikiru Ayinde Barrister, AKA Alhaji Agba, and Sir Shina Peter, amongst others, have used the talking drum to smile all the way to the bank."

"The human senses, especially our audiovisual senses, cannot resist being mesmerised by the rhythm of the talking drum. It grabs you!"

"I am giving all Nigerian and African artistes 'expo'. Instead of faking your death, if you want to blow, just record a song featuring the talking drum, and you can call me later. The talking drum was the secret ingredient Shina Peters referred to when he sang, 'Ibi ta tin modun ye wa. Kole ye won rara o. Kole ye won' in his hit tune, Ace." - Reno Omokri

🇳🇬 will forever hold a special place in my heart, as it was the very first West African country I had the privilege to explore. Over the course of my journey, I had the opportunity to visit some of Nigeria's most vibrant cities.

Lagos, the bustling economic hub of Nigeria, is a city that never sleeps. Its vibrant energy, breathtaking skyline, and the constant hum of activity make it a true metropolis. The juxtaposition of modernity and tradition in places like Victoria Island and the vibrant markets of Balogun make Lagos a city of captivating contrasts.

Abuja, the capital city, is a testament to the country's progress and aspirations. The grandeur of the government district, with its impressive architecture and well-planned streets, contrasts beautifully with the serene greenery of the A*o Rock. The sense of purpose and ambition that fills the air in Abuja is truly inspiring.

Ibadan, with its rich history and sprawling markets, left an indelible mark on my soul. The ancient city's impressive architecture and the warmth of its people made it an unforgettable experience.

Port Harcourt, with its bustling energy and the enchanting Niger Delta nearby, offered a unique blend of urban and natural beauty. The local cuisine and the rhythmic beats of the city's music scene were a true delight.

Akwa Ibom, known for its pristine beaches and lush greenery, felt like a paradise on Earth. The serene ambiance and the ever-smiling faces of the locals made it an oasis of tranquility.

Throughout my journey, what stood out the most was the boundless love and hospitality of Nigerians! You rarely hear Nigerians speak negatively of other nationalities! They love and embrace everyone! I am eagerly counting down the days until I can revisit these wonderful places and immerse myself in the love and beauty of Nigeria once more. -

It all began in 1896 when Chief Balogun Kuku, a prominent Ijebu son relinquished Christianity to embrace Islam which encourages polygamy because he had over thirty wives, over 200 slaves and other ardent followers.

Balogun Kuku's extreme wealth coupled with the respects and admiration the Ijebus had for him attracted many converts to Islam.

Celebrated in grandeur and magnetic majesty, Ojude Oba, meaning 'King's fore-court' in Yoruba language is usually celebrated by about 1,000,000 people from different parts of the world and Nigeria, especially the Yorubas and most especially by people of Ijebu descent all over the world.

It is the biggest and most sophisticated cultural festival on the world.

No refund after payment’: Peace Mass Transit loses in court

Transport company, Peace Mass Transit has lost its legal battle in a matter bordering on refund of money to passengers for trips not undertaken.

The incident that led to the suit occurred on the 10th of February, 2021, when the Plaintiff, Patrick C. Chukwuma purchased a ticket from the Obollor-Afor branch of Peace Mass Transit Limited to convey him to Enugu.

Following a two hours delay occasioned by the absence of passengers, the Plaintiff returned to the ticketing office and asked for a refund of the N500 he paid as the transportation fare.

However, staff of the Defendant refused to refund the money, insisting that their company policy was that money paid for transport fare cannot be returned to the passenger and citing the statement written on their ticket to that effect as conclusive proof of their position.

When the Plaintiff tried to explain to them that their policy was unlawful, as the law mandates them to refund fares for services that have not been provided they retorted in a rude manner, prompting the learned counsel to leave their park and seek alternative means of traveling back to Enugu.

A letter written by the lawyer to the Peace Mass Group of companies demanding an apology and refund was neglected, prompting the lawyers law firm to institute the action.

Delivering its judgement, the Court through Hon. Justice C.O. Ajah declared the no refund policy as illegal, null and void in light of the provisions of Sections 120, 104, 129 (1) (a) and (b) (iii) of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act, 2018.

The court further ordered the Defendant to pay the sum of N500,000 as damages to the Plaintiff.

Meanwhile, many Nigerians have been reacting to the judgment, describing it as an end to impunity among service providers.
