So recently we traveled to one of our favorite places Tulum, Mexico. We’ve been several times so when we do go, it’s strictly for R&R. If I’m being honest, every time that we travel, we never plan ahead. This typically has a huge impact on the cost of flights. Spring break was still in full effect, therefore the price for last minute flights on the major airlines were ranging from $2000-2200. There was no way I was going to pay that kind of money to go anywhere that I’ve been several times. 🤣 So, I searched around and boom I found a less expensive route. We flew from CVG to MIA round trip Frontier (for a little less than $500). We then took a Uber from MIA to Fort Lauderdale ($50) where we stayed the night at a Marriott hotel near the Fort Lauderdale airport ($150). We caught the hotel shuttle to the airport and flew Spirit ($455 round trip) to Cancun. Once we landed in Cancun, we took the ADO (local bus $26) to Tulum.
We opted to stay in an Airbnb in Tuk Tulum, a new construction area that we had not stayed in before (5 days $345). The location was perfect as it was directly across the street from the local grocery store. The place itself is nice (pictures below). It has a restaurant, rooftop pool and gym (a plus for him) on the property. This was our first time staying in an Airbnb with a stove in Tulum so we opted to cook breakfast a couple of days. We rented bikes and rode them everywhere. I even fell once or twice, hell who was even counting? 🥴🤣 We ate off of the local taco truck several times each day (clearly our favorite). 5 chicken tacos and a drink for about $6 beats any taco Tuesday here. 🤣 We finally gave in and went to one of the beach clubs. Entry was $250 and they gave us a credit of $2000 pesos which went towards food and drinks. Out of pocket we ended up only paying about $40 more. It was a nice experience but it’s not something that I would ever feel the need to do again.
We had an early morning flight home, so we had to schedule a taxi to the airport which cost $100. I picked return flights back with enough time to get us from FLL to MIA without a long wait between.
Overall as always, we enjoyed our stay in Tulum. Just a friendly reminder, we all know not to drink the water in Mexico but that also goes for brushing your teeth. 🗣️🗣️🗣️USE BOTTLED WATER! I’m guessing since we stayed in new construction that the quality of water wasn’t good. We’ve never had any issues before but somehow we contracted Shigella. 🤢🤢 Lesson learned!
