I saw something in the water.
Red Drum, Wanchese
I was outside this morning checking on a small plot of lettuce growing by the pond. As I was admiring my little crop, a bunch of jumping mullet that had become trapped during Hurricane Matthew started to cause a commotion on the surface. I looked at them and noticed a large shadow underneath the school of bait fish. I walked around the edge and put the sun behind my back where I was able to get a better look at what was going on. A rather large red drum was worrying the heck out of those mullet. I watched it attack them time after time. There were bait fish spraying the surface like a champ. I pointed it out to Laira and asked her to get the camera. I went inside and rigged up a popping cork with a 4 inch shad body on an unpainted jig head with a wide gap hook. My first cast went unnoticed but as I prepared for my second, I spotted the fish. I cast behind it and reeled fast to catch up to it. It smashed the surface with an awesome splash as it attempted to inhale the bobber. I stopped my retrieve, the fish turned immediately and sucked down the lure. Fish on! The fish earned its freedom after a quick picture. Enjoy the video.
The local sounds have been full of small Striped Bass (rockfish) this past summer and fall. Most are 8-12 inches long and so plentiful; they seem to be carpeting the bottom. This is a great indication of very good spawning seasons over the last couple of years and should be a mark of some continued good action.
The fish are always here in some kind of numbers but last year there was a really good showing of 20 – 24 inch fish and this year is also producing nice fish. The small fish excite me because of the promise of the continued good fishing that they represent.
I will have to be honest here. I enjoy the non-stop action of catching the small ones casting under birds almost as much as anything. I smash down the hook barb, use a very light action rod and reel and have a blast. The other day I was out and when I put my rod in a holder for a minute, I found out that trolling works also. It was slick calm, the birds were working a ton of bait, and we trolled quietly with the electric motor. It was a good way to end the day.
I talk about my pond quite often as a place to see cool stuff. There is a pear tree close by that has a bumper crop of fruit this year. Take a look at the video and see who now visits us on a regular basis.
