Villaparaisolanzarote is probably one of the best equipped villas for children’s things, but with 10 under 4’s in the group we needed a LOT of extra things!
They have lots of equipment to rent… not just baby stuff - everything you could think of for a rental villa! And with delivery and pick-up service, they were great! 😍😍

A whole big list of "not weird in Lanzarote"... Compiled by our moderator Alex who has lived here for five years so far. Give him a like 🥰

In supermarkets we don't take the whole six pack of Cola or Beer. We just take one or two and leave the rest. Normal to just disintegrate multipacks.

The weather is almost always not what google says it will be. Place is just too small. Plus being little exposed rocks, you can often drive 'into sun' on a rainy day (about 15 mins).

We are nowhere near Spain. Even my guests get that confused look when I point out the west coast of Africa on my little map. Yup, the flight is kinda long from Birmingham.

It's very quiet here. We have some big resorts but the whole island has the same population as Cheltenham. The capital islands have 10x the population despite being similar-ish sizes.

A heck of a lot more people smoke here. Not so much drink tho. Yes with meals but not as a hobby. I've never seen my Canarian friends "go for a beer" without a nibble too.

It's very cheap for us to island hop. And to visit Spain. We have a government given right to travel, so they pay 75% of the airfare for us. Not so much for you when you visit, sorry.

We drink strong coffee with condensed milk. It's yummy. The translation for this order is "milky milky please".

Most of my pals are not "Spanish". They are true-roots Canarian or more likely from Venezuela, Columbia or Cuba. It's a complicated island vibe. Nice though.

Rural communities are super friendly. They don't give a flip where you were born or what you do. They just wait six months to see if you're going to go back before they start hugging you.

We don't have BIG NOPE spiders, nor snakes, nor many predatory things. Just vultures and lizards and lots and lots of dogs. Canarias means dogs. Not birds.

This island has more tourists now than before the pandemic. It's officially full according to the politicians. Mainly because we want to keep some of the nice bits unbuilt.

The local average wage does not allow a couple to afford an apartment in any resort town. Your waiter has commuted from a village nearby and they share with their parents. Almost always.

The level of 'boat landing' immigration from Africa is extremely high but there are processes in place to hide it from tourist eyes. It's all very high tech and a bit scary.

Spanish law has very important new animal protection policies. Much better than the UK. But hunt dogs are not animals, they are tools. They get shot a lot. Sucks.

People don't trust banks much here. Mainly because they misunderstand that the bank doesn't randomly withhold your money, it forcefully pays your tax or debt bills.

Equally though, banks are slightly wild. How you are treated will sometimes depend on your tone, not your income. Even to the point of loans and mortgages.

You cannot get rich here. Unless you own bits of tourism or the company that makes white paint. There are family monopolies on most other industries.

The government is pretty transparent. Used to be very bribeable but these days everything is put on websites to study. Also means most things are slower than they used to be.

Every island looks different. Some have endless forests, others almost nothing but bare rock and sand. The big ones have both according to altitude.

Climate change is really obvious here. We used to have whole years with less than 1cm rain. Now we have weeks followed by downpours. The infrastructure will fail.

Living here isn't always holiday but it TOTALLY is on days off. We get huge discounts on all the attractions. And we know all the little hidden coves.

Our roads are way better than the UK. Holes are filled in overnight. There are big signs up thanking the EU for all the road money. Massive difference.

Our capital is the cheapest place to live. Even though it's got more stuff to do and a very nice beach. Apartments there are about 40% cheaper than elsewhere.

Big parts of my island are out of bounds. A third of it is a national park and you cannot even walk on most of that. Other bits are military or hunt ranges.

A whole lot of people own motorhomes here. Which is odd seeing as 'home' is never more than 30 mins away on a good day. Still, they like to park at the seaside.

I could drive home. There's a ferry to Cadiz (couple days) and then a decent route up to Calais and Dover. Costs a lot though. Might do it one day.

Most little villages have a church. Most also have a village-run cafe of sorts. Both of these things tend to be very lovely and more common than a shop or bar.

A lot of Spanish people come on holiday to Lanzarote. It's got a reputation of being 'posh'. The Spanish Prime Minister comes. The king has a house. Oddly.

Gran Canaria has one of the best aquariums in the whole world. It's called Poem of the Sea. And it is life altering stuff. A ferry there takes 3 hours from Lanza.

We grow crops in lava. Ground up little bits of it. Mainly potatoes and onions. Other greener islands have all sorts of fruit and veg. For us those things are expensive.

There is no water here. It's all desalinated in the big industrial park. 30 years ago it came by water ship. We have attempted to capture water from clouds. The wind broke the nets.

There are lots of sharks. But not the sort that tend to attack. More problematic are the jellyfish which are a tad deadly on the northern coast.

There are no direct ferries to Africa from here. Because the bit over the water is disputed territory and managed by the United Nations. You can fly though.

It takes me around 7 minutes to drive to a place where I can see the sea from anywhere on the whole island. We are nicely shaped with tall bits in the middle.

People take their cat or small dog on the plane with them. It's only the UK that makes pet travel hard. Hello puppo, yes you can hug me on the flight.

Social security is very limited here. No money, no eat. Since the pandemic, we are only ever about two bad months away from being homeless. Still, friends are kind.

We have big normal supermarkets. Our favourite supermarket has a dinosaur logo. They sell everything apart from microwave meals. Those aren't a thing. Cakes are.

The lottery is very popular here. That might also be a Spanish cultural thing, I don't know. When someone wins a fairly minor prize it hits the headlines.

Tourists keep getting stuck on volcanoes. Every week they get rescued at least once. Often from exhaustion. Sometimes by helicopter. Costs a fortune.

There are no billboards in Lanzarote. Manrique law forbids them. Some logos are also forcibly replaced with white outlines. We don't like over selling brands here.

99% of houses have no heating. Yet it can get chilly in winter. For a few days each year the shops sell out of electric fan heaters. Most people buy a thick duvet for those days.

When it rains hard, we close the schools. Everything kinda shuts down. The buildings leak and the power goes out frequently. And then it's dry and all is fine again.

This is possibly Atlantis. There are reasonable explanations. We also have statues under the sea but we put those there. The peaks are covered in sea shells however.

Most of our rubbish goes into a volcano. Not to burn, just to sort of store it there. A lot of birds enjoy that area. It's very smelly but we try to recycle as much as possible.

Both NASA and ESA train their people here on the lava. And the lava tubes are used to test mars mapping. It really is an incredible landscape beyond the towns.

Our airport costs less than 1 Euro for a half hours parking. It's no problem to come and pick you up. 11 Euro overnight with the app. Silly UK with your prices. Ours is busier than some of yours.

There are 5 tourists for every resident during high season in Lanzarote. This island and Fuerteventura are highly dependant. We are trying to diversify but also thank you.

Yes the volcanoes are active enough to be a slight problem. In 2021 many towns were destroyed on La Palma by an eruption. We will get fair warning though from seismic sensors.

I have a big map on my wall in my bedroom with the Canary Islands in the centre. I've been coming here since I was 12 and it feels like home. What does your map look like?
