Wine Regions of South Australia

South Australia is home to 18 different wine regions and is known as one of the Great Wine Capitals of the World, up there with the likes of Bordeaux in France. The trophy cabinet is no longer filled with Old World wines and the New World is taking the industry to elevated heights.

Visitors to South Australia are invited to experience world class wines direct from the cellar doors. In this short post, I will talk briefly about some of the regions and how they differ.

Barossa Valley
Without being too geopolitical, probably the best-known wine region in Australia is the Barossa Valley. Located an hour’s drive north from Adelaide and with over 80 cellar doors to explore it is well worth the visit. The Barossa has warm summers and dry winters making Cabernets and Shiraz unbeatable. The region is believed to have the world’s oldest shiraz vineyard at Langmeil Winery. Guests staying overnight can sleep in comfort at Barossa Shiraz Estate; a collection of luxury cottages nestled amongst the rolling hills and vines, in the heart of the Barossa.

McLaren Vale
McLaren Vale sits 40 minutes south from Adelaide and is more coastal. Therefore, the region has a different growing condition to the Barossa. Typically, Shiraz, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay as well as lesser-produced varieties such as Tempranillo, Marsanne, Roussanne and Sangiovese are grown here. The iconic d'Arenberg cube is a 5-story art feature where you can sample wonderful food and wine and view artwork. Well worth a visit if in the region.

Visit Adelaide Hills
As the name suggests, the Adelaide Hills are located to the east of Adelaide’s city centre. Higher in elevation (727m), the growing conditions are much cooler here and therefore grape varieties such as Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Shiraz are prominent. One of my favourite wineries is The Lane Vineyard and is the perfect place to sample wine, eat delicious food and soak up the views.

There are many other wine regions in South Australia including the well-known Clare Valley, Coonawarra and Riverland regions. All a little different from each other and all worth a visit. A Taste of South Australia operate tours to all corners of South Australia, specialising in food and wine. With over 30 years’ experience you can trust Maryanne to deliver memorable experiences, tailored to individuals’ tastes.

It should be worth noting that the wine regions do offer more than just delectable wine. There are wonderful restaurants, craft breweries, Gin distilleries and many other boutique artisans across the state. When you are next visiting, take the time to stop and experience these regions and not just pass through.

Renmark, South Australia. Located off the main international tourist trails is this small unassuming region. Is it worth visiting, and if so, why?

I will be honest. I didn’t know much about the Riverlands until I went there myself back in 2018. I discovered a region as diverse as any other in Australia. Adorned by fabulous wineries, meandering rivers and estuaries filled with wildlife, stunning conservation parks and a community culture like nowhere else.

For international travellers, the region has a huge amount to offer. There is a wide range of accommodation and touring options available, and it is a great alterative to the coastal route for the Great Ocean Road between Adelaide and Melbourne. Below are just a few key experiences for visitors to the region.

Wineries
You might be surprised to know that the Riverlands is the largest wine producing region in Australia with over 30 wine brands based here. All major Australian wine brands use grapes from the region. It’s not all about wineries though. The Riverland is South Australia largest fruit growing region and sampling fresh fruit and vegetables is a real treat.

Murray River & Wildlife
The lifeblood of the Riverlands is the Murray River, Australia’s longest river system stretching from the Snowy Mountains all the way to South Australia. The Riverland Ramsar Site is an internationally recognised wetland system covering 30,615 hectares and incorporates a series of creeks, channels, billabongs, and lakes. A wide variety of wildlife are drawn to these wetlands.

Outback
Calperum Station provides an ideal opportunity to reconnect with nature and conservation. With abundant native birds and wildlife, Calperum is home to rare and threatened species of flora and fauna and is rich in history. Calperum is managed by a team of Ecologists and Indigenous Rangers who restore and preserve the property.

Great Ocean Road
The inland Great Ocean Road route offers visitors a unique experience and so much more depth to their self-drive holiday. Not only incorporating the Barossa Valley and Renmark, but visitors will also experience Mungo National Park and the Grampians enroute to the Twelve Apostles.

The Frames - Riverland Luxury offers luxury accommodation right on the banks of the Murray River. Beautifully designed for couples and built for discerning travellers, the award winning, luxury accommodation, offers world class luxury and personal hospitality. Your luxury experience at The Frames is secluded and private for two, with the opportunity to venture out and include local river experiences with gourmet food and wine.

So, there you have it. A fantastic region in South Australia, away from main tourist crowds, yet one that should definitely be on the list for those wanting to meet authentic Aussies and enjoy lots of great food, wine and wildlife experiences!... not forgetting the mighty Murray!

Kangaroo Island, Australia. 🦘🇦🇺

How long do you need to allow to visit Kangaroo Island? We see this question a lot and due to its proximity to Adelaide it can be visited on a day tour. We would certainly not recommend this short a time... So how long then?

Below is our guide to visiting Kangaroo Island.

👉1 Day Tour ex Adelaide – Leaving Adelaide early in the morning, it takes around a 90 minute coach ride to reach Cape Jervis and a further 30 minutes by ferry to get to the island. From there you will generally travel the South Coast Road visiting the Seals at Seal Bay followed by Flinders Chase National Park before retracing your way back to Adelaide. Expect to be in the coach for approximately 8.5 hours of the day. This tour is suitable for those on a really tight time schedule.

👉2 Day / 1 night ex Adelaide – Spending 2 full days on Kangaroo Island means you have much more time to see the highlights. The first day is typically spent exploring the South Coast, just as the 1 Day Tour above. The second day of the tour is discovering the incredible artisan food and wine trails that Kangaroo Island is known for. Additionally, you will also have time to soak up the stunning north coast scenery and spot more of the Islands unique wildlife. Most of the accommodation is dotted along the protected north-eastern coastline and ranges from budget friendly to 5* Eco Luxury.

👉3 Day / 2 nights ex Adelaide – For those who can spend a little longer, this would be our ideal recommendation for time spent on Kangaroo Island. Even though the Island looks small, it does take time to get around and the sights are many. A typical 3-day itinerary will see you travel both the South and North Coast Roads, explore the food and wine trails, and get to experience off the beaten track sights. Half day marine adventures can also be built into these longer itineraries.

🚗Can you self-drive KI? Absolutely, however please note this with a caution. The wildlife on the island is prolific and care needs to be taken when driving. At any point Echidna, Koalas, Kangaroos or other wildlife can pop out in front of you. It is recommended to drive no faster than 80km/hr and certainly not during the hours between dusk and dawn. It takes approximately 2 hours to drive length wise across the island.

Accommodation - For those seeking a premium luxury stay whilst on Kangaroo Island, look no further than Oceanview Eco Villas Kangaroo Island . This fully hosted experience is set on a private 500-acre nature reserve with over 1km of north facing coastline. The Villas are an eco-build and completely off-grid, utilising solar power and the best available eco products and technology. For more information visit www.oceanviewkangarooisland.com.au

Visitors to Sydney inevitably venture out onto the iconic harbour for those all-inspiring views of the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge. With many options available what is the best way to incorporate a harbour cruise into your next holiday?

Below are 3 ways you can experience Sydney Harbour from the water.

1/ Large Group Cruise – These cruises offer an affordable experience on the harbour. The cruises generally include lunch or dinner, last approx. 90 minutes and great for those on a budget. It is worth noting though they can lack commentary. Approximate lunch cruise with window seat retails for approximately AUD$250 for 2 people

2/ Small Group Cruise – A good option for those who want to have a more intimate experience but also happy to share the boat with other guests. These tours run on set departure times, generally including a gourmet lunch and are longer in duration, approx. 4 hours. They include 2 hours of cruising, and 2 hours at restaurants. Commentary is provided. Approximate lunch cruise retails for approximately AUD$1,250 for 2 people. A Small Group Cruise with sightseeing only lasts 2 hours and retails for approximately AUD$320 for 2 people

3/ Private Cruise – Sydney Luxury Cruise offers excellent value private cruise options. As the boats are owned by SLC and are not bound by fixed departures, private cruises offer flexibility and can range from 1 hour right up to full day excursions. A typical experience is a 90 minute private cruise, followed by a gourmet lunch or dinner at an acclaimed restaurant is approximately AUD$890 for 2 people. Alternatively, a 60-minute private sightseeing harbour cruise is approximately AUD$500 for 2 people.

The facts are you will see the majority of Sydney Harbours key sights in a 90 minute cruise. Sydney Luxury Cruise offer a range of excellent experiences that can be tailored to suit individual needs. They also offer city sightseeing tours in luxury vehilces which can be combined with a cruise for the full Sydney experience.

All prices noted above are approximates and referenced as a guide only. For more details visit Sydney Luxury Cruise at www.sydneyluxurycruise.com

Queensland's Sunshine Coast. Beautiful golden sand beaches and a picture-perfect hinterland. So how do you decide where to stay? 🤔

Here are our TOP 5 reasons you should consider the Sunshine Coast Hinterland for your next holiday. 👇

1/ Beautiful scenery – The hinterland region is dotted with postcard perfect villages offering stunning coastal and rainforest views. The perfect place to disconnect and plug into nature. The lush, sub-tropical rainforest can be easily explored, art galleries visited and local artisans to discover.

2/ Less Crowds – Australian beaches can get busy during the summer months. During summer, Noosa is very very busy. Accommodation in the heart of Noosa can be tricky to find, parking is a problem, and the cafes and restaurants are fully booked in advance. Dealing with crowds is to be expected.

3/ Cooler Temperatures – The hinterland benefits from a milder climate than the coast, where temps can easily reach 35 degrees with high humidity. The elevation of the hinterland brings cooler night time temperatures and low pollution levels, perfect for sleeping.

4/ Excellent value – Hinterland accommodation offers excellent value. Stay in luxurious tree houses, cottages or villas, with an abundance of space and facilities. Restaurants dish up first-class dinning utilising locally sourced produce when available.

5/ Accessibility – To reach the pretty villages of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland it is an easy 1-hour drive north from Brisbane along the scenic Blackall Range Tourist Drive. The beaches are a short 30-minute drive away and you can reach the main coastal motorway is just 15-minutes.

There is no doubt the Sunshine Coast should be on your top list of places to visit. Montville Misty View Cottages offers luxurious accommodation, nestled in complete privacy, with unique view to enjoy over the beautiful Lake Baroon.
