A traditional Danish Christmas dish you can try with us is flæskesteg (roasted pork)! Of course, it is not everyone’s choice for Christmas as some prefer duck, yet flæskesteg still remains a popular dish for the holidays. What makes this roast pork stand out is its crispy rind. It’s beginning to look like Christmas… and we think so too! The second weekend of Advent just passed us, reminding us all that Christmas is around the corner! This year may not have the traditional julefrokosts (Christmas lunches) as we know it, but there is still plenty to do to get into the Christmas spirit!

Take a walk in Tivoli and its magical lights! Or simply, the streets of Copenhagen which are filled with cozy lights and ice-skating rings have popped up in several places. We recommend you don’t miss the ring right by Broens Gadekøkken (The Bridge Street Kitchen)! Are you excited for Christmas? 🎄

Beer, beer, beer! It is hard not to think of beers when someone mentions Nørrebro. From bodegas to craft beer breweries, this neighborhood has it all! Not only there is different places and beers to try, there is different beers on taps based on the season. Famously, Denmark has a traditionally Christmas beer that always debuts on a day called J-Dag in November. Nørrebro’s biggest brewery, Nørrebro Bryghus has their own version of this tasty beer. This week will take a walk on the multi-cultural streets of Nørrebro! Currently, best known for its notorious nightlife scene, this neighborhood has been through several transformations over the years. The main street of the area, Nørrebrogade stretches over 2km long and you better be an experienced biker if you want to cycle through in rush hour! 🚲 One main point of interest is the Assistens Cemetery that is right by Nørrebrogade. Did you know this is H.C. Andersen final resting place?

After a delicious meal in the canals of Christianshavn, one cannot pass on washing it down with snaps! Snaps which is a word for a strong alcoholic drink is a must try. Distilled from potatoes and grains it is flavored with a variety of herbs, and is a tasty dessert after a heavy meal.

Did you know that there is a specific way on how to drink snaps in Scandinavia? Traditionally, the host pours out the drinks and then leads the way with ‘skål’ all the while the rest of the group make sure to look one another in the eyes. After the snaps has been drunk, the host is the first one to put the glasses down and the rest can only lift theirs up once the host has done so for another round.

Wondering through the canals of Christinashavn, one can find many delicious offerings of the traditional smørrebrød (open-faced sandwiches). This meal usually consists of rugbrød (rye bread) topped with various cold cuts such as fish, meat and cheese. The most common fish toppings include salmon or herring. This week we will wonder the canals of Christianshavn! This neighborhood is a true testament of diversity – from the hippie areas of Christiania to the fancy residential areas and canals. As the mixture of these two worlds, Christianshavn has developed a bohemian reputation as early as the 1970s!

While exploring this neighborhood with us, you will also get a glimpse into the historical areas of Kongens Nytorv and Nyhavn. Once we cross the Inner Harbor Bridge, we find ourselves in the newly commissioned area of Krøyers Plads. What else is missing when talking about food in Vesterbro – drinks of course. You can bet that the neighborhood that is home to the cafés, bars and restaurants of Kødbyen has a wide range of delicious drink offerings! When it comes to beer, Denmark is one of the biggest consumers, so it is no surprise that Vesterbro offers a whole range of beers. Continuing our Vesterbro series, let’s talk about food! Reflecting the hipness and easy-goingness of the neighborhood, there is no shortage of delicious food on the go or in lovely restaurants. From fancy fish bars, to tasty hot dogs like the one on this photo, all the way to traditional Danish pork roast sandwiches (flæskestegssandwich), everyone can find their favorite selection of food. Did you know when it comes to the roasted pork, only 2% of Danes like to eat it in the summertime because of the texture of the pork? ☀️

After a lovely meal, what else is nicer than to relax with a cup of coffee and a delicious dessert? Vesterbro also has a wide variety of pastry offerings, and of course the Danish cinnamon twist! For those with a sweet tooth as well as the brave ones who are in for a challenge, try and ask for a ‘rødgrød med fløde’ at your favorite local restaurant! Today, and for the rest of the week, we discover the hip neighborhood of Vesterbro! This trendy neighborhood has it all, from the underground clubs and bars of Kødbyen to the beautiful buildings from the 1880s that have been refurbished into modern and expensive apartments.

Vesterbro is also a pillar of social work with its historical homeless shelter Mændenes Hjem and Maria Church’s important work in providing food to the most vulnerable people of society. What is your favorite spot in Vesterbro? 😎
