Tomorrow it is officially spring 🤍 the lavender field is waiting patiently… and so are we. Last night we enjoyed a fantastic Truffle themed diner in Carpentras at a truly wonderful evening. Everybody is telling us we should enrol Flo & Guus in the truffle dog training school in our village. 🧐 Might be a good idea. Wish I could stay for the whole month and see spring unfold, but sadly we have to close the shutters of Mas Couvaloup and travel North again. With a stopover in Beaune as a beaunus!

Mas Couvaloup is future proof again, as it has a new roof. Sometimes long distance building is a challenge… Must say I had some fierce app conversations with our lovely French builder this winter, as his tastes are sometimes a little more modern than mine… No …. I DON’T want a copper drain… I want it exactly like it was…!!!! Meaning with a genoise !!! A genoise is the decorative frieze made out of rows of tuiles which keeps the rain off the façade of the house, a Roman invention. The name literally means “Italian sponge cake”. The builder -without my knowledge - first had covered the old frieze in cement, to be able to fit a new copper drain easily. I am afraid I have to tell you that I went completely ballistic after seeing his photos. 😂 Anyway… he made a new genoise which is now three rows instead of two, meaning the farmhouse has levelled up… It is said that the wealthier you are – the more rows you have! The attic is becoming a dorm style bedroom for children with its own bathroom all walls have been treated with line wash so the dormouse can’t get in anymore…. Guus is enjoying the sunshine. All’s well that ends well ☀️

A visit to Provence to check on some building works at Mas Couvaloup. More on that later. Today was one of the only 65 days a year without sun in Provence 😆 We had lunch in the village of Grignan, famous for its impressive château with a link to one of France’s great writers: Mme de Sévigné. After her husband was killed in a duel (over a mistress) when she was only 25 years old, Mme de Sévigné decided being married was not her ultimate goal in life. She devoted herself completely to her two children. When her daughter Françoise-Marguerite married the Count of Grignan in 1669 and moved to Provence two years later, her mother missed her terribly. They immediately started corresponding two or three times a week, which lead to the now famous and brilliant correspondence about 17th century French society, its politics and personal views. Mme de Sévigné stayed at the château of Grignan with her daughter three times and a total of four years. She died on 17th April 1696 in the château of Grignan at 70 years old.

New in at the Couvaloup store: 100% linen sofa cover in 100 % linen. ‘Hmmm, what is a sofa cover…?’ I hear you think. Well, let me explain. A sofa cover is a padded plaid, measuring 85cm x 185cm, to put on your sofa to protect it and add character at the same time. Ours are the originals, by Parisian brand . Available in four colorways and carefully woven on traditional looms. Use one when the dog snuggles up to you on the couch, or when small children eat their afternoon snacks watching telly. Or just to beautify and personalise your sofa. Machine washable at 30C🤍
