At the Couvaloup store we love a palm motif on almost anything. And aren’t the palm candlesticks by Les Ottomans true game changers for your table? But what exactly does the palm symbol stand for?? Nowadays the palm🌴is often associated with the good life, being on holiday. Tropical islands anyone? But in ancient times palm branches were a symbol of victory and conquering heroes returning from the battlefield had palms lain at their feet. In Ancient Greece a palm branch was given to winning athletes… And do you remember the hosanna scène in Jesus Christ Superstar? Palm trees are thought to represent the Garden of Paradise and used to represent wisdom.
In Arabic, the term Fog al-Nakhal, literally meaning ‘above the palm trees’, used to indicate euphoria, satisfaction or strong happiness 🤍🤍🤍🌴

One of the lovely handmade Kantha quilts by on the bed. Kantha fabrics feature a very simple, straight running stitch. The patterns are often creative, spontaneous, original, and emotional. For centuries, in eastern India, babies have been swaddled in soft kantha quilts made from old clothing such as frayed saris and dhotis, layered and stitched together. And when guests paid a visit, special kantha rugs would be spread on the floor. Kantha is more than one thousand years old, dating back to the pre-Vedic times (prior to 1500 BC) in ancient India, and although it was traditionally a utilitarian, functional style of embroidery, it also had – and continues to have – a unique way of portraying and celebrating life events.

Perhaps it’s time to say ‘hi’ to all new followers this summer….? Welcome..🙏… so very nice of you to follow this very personal account. I’m more of a ‘stay behind the scenes type of person’, but still, it is only civil to put a face to a name at some point, is it not?
My name is Jet, which is a typical Dutch name, but it might be confusing for frequent flyers … (It is short for Henriëtte)
Since I was young I have always been inspired by the casual elegance of the Mediterranean landscape and vernacular architecture. No frills, no flashy colors. Dusty roads through olive groves. Simple stone houses with shutters. Beautiful hillsides that offer the perfect blend of shelter and panorama... The elegance of parasol pine trees, or the graphic form of a group of cypress on top of a hill. I have always felt the need to make my direct surroundings soothing, serene and beautiful, but always in a relaxed way. With the Couvaloup store I try to show that interiors can be a mix up of styles and inspirations, not too sleek and overly designed, just pick beautifully made items with soul, and it will all fall into place. My favorite spot to think up new projects is the kitchen table … this one I designed to fit 6 people easily, but it works for only 2 peeps too… With a view on the garden … je suis content 🤍

Terracotta pots in Uzès… I could literally buy them all.. Plus a visit to the impressive aquaduct Pont du Gard. Built around 50 CE, during the reigns of the emperors Claudius and Nero, the aquaduct of which the Pont du Gard is a part, supplied the city of Nîmes’ fountains and its spa with fresh water, and provided running water in the luxury Roman villa’s.

The eye catcher of the Couvaloup store this summer is this sculptural pendant, made of paper. It’s available in four sizes, blue dipped or only white. The design blends an organic shape and aesthetic with an understated, minimalist form, based on the lantern flower. Each hand-crafted shade is composed only of paper, without any metal components.

Huis Te Jaarsveld / Designers Guild part II
Huis Te Jaarsveld is once again a working farm that not only produces its own apple cider from its orchard🍎 but also produces high quality alpaca wool by a small herd of super cute alpacas 🦙. After a lovely lunch we toured the 17th century main house, coachhouse, apple barn, cottage all beautifully decorated and fully prepared to receive guests, host weddings and meetings. A perfect day, thank you Joris Willemine and team and Designers Guild 🙏🏻
Huis Te Jaarsveld / Designers Guild part I
Presentation of the new autumn collection at country estate Huis te Jaarsveld. The small country estate has been lovingly restored by its owner Joris Huijsmans. Aided by fabric fairy Wilhelmine van Aerssen of who created a magical palette using fabrics and wallpapers by (amongst others) Nobilis, Nina Campbell, Designers Guild, Ralph Lauren and William Yeoward.
This weekend we made some changes in the store, to be able to make a special corner dedicated to all fabrics and wallpaper books. Its a corner flooding with natural light so you’ll be able to match colors easily. And as you probably know…. when you start changing … EVERYTHING needs to change. So now the counter is in a different place too.. and all sofa’s too 😎 Arflex modulair sofa Marechiaro is placed at the front of the store. Headwear has been been the most important & powerful accessory one could wear for thousands of years 👑 🎩 👒 but I think we’ve lost the art of wearing a hat to hairstyles perhaps…
When you’re new to wearing a hat, it’s easy to feel like your new accessory is “too much.” So, start with a simple, classic style. Often, smaller hats feel more comfortable. Brass pendant Cosmos by is the big brother of the well known smaller Cosmos lamps. With its large petals it will multiply the light in a room. Brass will get a natural matted patina over time. On the right porcelain Bufferlamp over the bar, a design by Wieki Somers for Together these pendants give this part of the store a golden glow. Bufferlamps inner wall is covered with a golden lustre glaze and spreads a warm light. The quality of the light over Rotterdam harbour at dusk, as seen from the window of their studio, inspired Wieki Somers. The design reminds me of a boat fender, cut in half. Bufferlamp is even included in the collection of museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam!

The lavender is out at Le Mas Couvaloup 💜🤍 Very blessed to call this little piece of paradise my own… This autumn we will be taking up a new project; refurbishing the ‘grenier’ or attic. The importance of a neutral palette - A calm color scheme is best pared with texture, to bring different layers of interest. Natural materials, whether they are stone or wood, linen or reed can help to anchor a neutral color scheme. They bring laid back quality that always works well for me… It means that the overall look doesn’t feel too contrived or uptight or overly designed. Sofas and armchairs that are covered in light tones -or white even- of varying textures, like linen, canvas and a bouclé for example, continue a lightness of touch. Works nicely with the white walls in this part of the store. #layering #texture #lightness
